Day 70: The ones who are gone. | The Walk Out
Some of the people you owe an apology to are dead. You waited too long. You didn’t know you’d never have another chance. They were taken before you got to them.
That’s a specific kind of pain.
TODAY’S TRUTH You can still apologize to someone who’s gone. The apology still does its work in you.
THE READ “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3
He does this for the person grieving the dead. He also does this for the person who has unfinished business with the dead.
In your own words — what's this saying to you?
THE REAL There’s a unique weight to owing an apology to somebody you can’t reach because they’re gone. The window closed. You can’t fix it. You can’t ask their forgiveness. They died not knowing you wished it had been different.
That’s a wound you carry whether you talk about it or not. Most people who’ve buried someone they had unfinished business with carry this.
The apology still has to happen. Out loud. Even though they can’t hear it.
Here’s why: the apology isn’t only for them. It’s also for you. Saying it does work in you that needs to be done. The unsaid thing rots if you don’t say it. Saying it to God, in their name, breaks the rot.
Write the letter you’d have written. Read it out loud. To God. To them, in your head. To the empty room. The form doesn’t matter. The naming does.
You might also do something concrete — visit the grave if you can. Plant something. Donate to something they cared about. Tell their kids, if you can, what you wished you’d told them. The shape of the action varies. The principle is the same: you mark, externally, that the apology has been made.
This won’t bring them back. It won’t undo what you did. But it will let you put down the weight of unsaid words, and that’s not nothing.
PULL UP Who’s on your list that’s gone? What did you wish you’d said?
Write it out — don't just think it:
THE MOVE Today, write or speak the apology to that person. Name them. Name what you’d say if they could hear it. Trust God to deliver what He can.
Did it today? ☐ Yes ☐ Not yet — what happened when you did?
