Day 62: Why we tell ourselves the story we tell ourselves. |The Walk Out
Most of us have a version of the worst day that’s softer than what actually happened. We didn’t decide to soften it. Our brains did it for us.
It’s time to look at the actual story.
TODAY’S TRUTH The story you’ve been telling yourself about what happened is probably not the whole story.
THE READ “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” — Jeremiah 17:9
Brutal verse. The point: your own heart will lie to you about what you did. You’re not a reliable narrator about yourself.
In your own words — what's this saying to you?
THE REAL After we do something we can’t live with, the brain starts editing.
It removes details that hurt too much. It adds context that softens the impact. It shifts blame around. It plays up what other people did to push us into it. It plays down what we did to push ourselves. It creates a narrative we can survive with.
This isn’t lying, exactly. It’s coping. It’s how the brain protects itself from breaking under the weight of what we did.
But the cost is high. Because the story we tell ourselves shapes who we become. If we tell ourselves a softened story, we don’t actually face what we did. We don’t actually grow from it. We just bury it slightly deeper.
The work of reckoning starts with telling the actual story. Out loud. To God. Maybe to one safe person. The version where you didn’t get to edit the parts that make you look bad. The version where you face what you actually did, not the version your brain made tolerable.
This is brutal. It might take days. Don’t rush it.
But there’s no healing in the softened version. The softened version is the version you’ve been trying to live with for years, and it hasn’t been working. The actual version is the one you can finally put down.
PULL UP What’s the difference between the version of your story you’ve been telling and the version that actually happened? What have you been editing out?
Write it out — don't just think it:
THE MOVE Today, tell God the version with the edits put back in. Out loud. Specific. Don’t worry about being articulate. Just tell Him.
Did it today? ☐ Yes ☐ Not yet — what happened when you did?
TRACK IT What did you put back in?
