Day 31: The name you answer to. | The Walk Out

There’s a list of names people call you. Some you like. Most you don’t. All of them affect what you think about yourself.

TODAY’S TRUTH The name you answer to becomes the person you become.

God knows your name. The actual name. Not the ones people gave you. Not the ones you gave yourself. Not the labels on your file or in your head.

THE REAL You become what you answer to.

If everyone calls you “stupid” growing up, you start to believe it. If they call you “screwup,” you become one. If they call you “felon” or “junkie” or “loser,” that becomes the lens you look at yourself through.

The names that get stuck on us aren’t always wrong about behavior — sometimes you really did the stupid thing or the criminal thing. But the name turns the behavior into a permanent identity. It says: this is what you ARE. Not just what you did.

God doesn’t do that. He sees what you’ve done. He’s clear about it. But His name for you is different from any name a person ever gave you. He calls you mine.

This whole volume is about untangling the names. The ones that stuck. The ones that don’t fit anymore. The ones that were never true. And the one true name God has for you, underneath all the others.

We start today by listing them.

PULL UP Write down 5 names you’ve answered to over the years. Don’t filter. Bad ones. Funny ones. The ones from your dad. The ones from school. The ones on your file. Just list them.

Write it out — don't just think it.

THE MOVE Today, when you catch yourself answering to one of those names in your head, stop. Say out loud: “That’s not my name.”
