Come See a Man

Last week we finished a series through the book of James and during that series we discovered that talk is cheap But actions are expensive and at the end of last week, there was a charge There was an invitation James said hey go out and invite your loved ones to have them experience Jesus Here at Revere we like to say give God a year and see the transformation that he can do that is going all-in Open wide your heart your mind your space your energy and see what God can do Well, you know what I love that this message isn't just for the spiritually wise or the deep or the elderly There is a girl by the name of Harmony who is celebrating her 15th birthday today And she took that charge seriously So she put on an invitation that the party was gonna start here at Revere. So Harmony happy birthday girl I got a little balloon and a cake to honor you. She's sitting somewhere over here where she at. Hey, happy birthday And Her daddy used to be a club promoter in LA. So I seen them on Instagram inviting everybody and their mama There's a rooftop party afterwards y'all aren't invited to that but you are welcome to her birthday party here at Revere Harmony. Happy birthday We're so proud of you and excited that you're here. Yes, and That is the perfect way to start this new series entitled one Invitation away do me a favor turn with me in your Bible said John chapter 4 as we go ahead and dive in John chapter 4 we are rolling up to a scene where Jesus has an interesting conversation and a conversation turns into an Invitation and the invitation turns to transformation. So John chapter 4 starting in verse 4 says Now he Jesus he had to go through Samaria I don't spend a whole lot of time here leave the verses on the screen because it's gonna be short I love that scripture says that he had to go through Samaria because Jesus didn't have to go through Samaria There was another route he could have taken to go where he was headed But no Scripture includes that he had to go through Samaria and I firmly believe that he had to go through Samaria because he had to have this conversation Verse 5 so he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar near the plot of ground Jacob had given his son Joseph Jacob's well was there and Jesus tired as he was from his journey. His dogs are barking He needed a little shade and a little rest and a little water and he sat down by the well It was about noon now

This is an interesting detail If you brought your Bible you could circle the word noon and that's interesting because anyone worth their salt in this society would know that you would go to the well in the morning or in the evening and the coolness of the morning or the coolness of the evening the ladies of the Community would go to this well and they would kiki and they would ha ha and they would talk and they would talk about other People too. And so the fact that it is noon is a detail to note In verse 7 says when a Samaritan woman came to draw water Jesus said to her Will you give me a drink? This is foreign. This is odd This is interesting and then the details include that Jesus is there alone and verse 8 tells us his disciples had gone into the town to buy food Verse 9 the Samaritan woman said to him Hold up. I'm sorry. Wait, what you are asking me? You are Jew and I'm a Samaritan woman. How how could you ask me for a drink? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans when we talk about life transformation Some people call that revival the word revival is rooted in the Latin word Respiritu which means to breathe in for something to come back to life For something that was dead to come back to life and experience life transformation We sometimes think that it happens only to the smartest to the brightest to the luckiest The few the chosen the special but this woman wasn't any of those. I Usually start with the title of the sermon, but I must save that it's like the secret sauce So if you're the note-taking type, I want you to jot down this this conversation that leads to an invitation that leads to transformation We need to understand something that revival begins when Jesus breaks through barriers Revive for the one Pentecostal. Thank you for saying. Uh-huh. I appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Mm-hmm See, you know where I'm going sis. You're a church girl. I could tell Revival begins when Jesus breaks through barriers. Well, what are the barriers? Listen, she was a Samaritan now. I understand in our time in our context that might Might not mean anything to you but during that time Jesus would have known that Samaritans were the social outcasts if you didn't know

Jesus knew that Samaritans were considered unclean and if you didn't know Jesus knew that as Samaritan Would make you unclean if you touched a bowl a cup a fork or even sat in a chair you might not know but if you were a Samaritan and you walked by a good Jew and the The sun at noon casted a shadow that touched a Jew. The good Jew would be ceremoniously unclean. See, you might not know that, but Jesus knew that. Now, we might get lost in translation, so let me make this as plain as possible. Good Jews and Samaritans, they didn't hang out. They hated each other. And to make this feel like common knowledge for us, let me give you a little American history. This would be like the squabbles, the lingering family squabbles that we see in American history with the Hatfields and the McCoys. They would have been so segregated and so separate. Think of it as the segregation gap between white people and black people in the 1950s. They got more beef than the Bloods and the Crips. I mean, there is more drama than 50 Cent and Puff Daddy, okay, like there's a lot going on here. Oh, I'm glad you laughed. First service did not find that funny. I like you, don't tell them, don't tell them. So she's a Samaritan and she's a woman. Collect your pearls, church, because she already had a strike against her as a Samaritan, but now she's got a double strike. She's a woman.

And Jesus would have known that during that time, women would be considered second-class citizens. Jesus, though he wouldn't have said this, would have been around religious people that would have prayed an ancient prayer that said in open spaces, out loud, thank you, God, for not making me a Gentile. Thank you, God, for not making me a foreigner. Thank you, God, for not making me a fool, and thank you, God, for not making me a woman. Jesus would have known that a Samaritan woman would have been perpetually, ceremoniously unclean. Stay with me. If a woman was menstruating, she would be considered ceremoniously unclean that would last anywhere from three to seven days of a menstrual cycle. There was a law that was passed that a woman who is a Samaritan would be perpetually in a state of menstruation, meaning she couldn't worship in services, she couldn't touch or even be around good Jews. And Jesus definitely would have known that a man, definitely a rabbi, should not talk to a woman because good Jews did not speak to women, let alone a Samaritan woman. And yet, my God, sits there and busts through cultural barriers, religious barriers, gender barriers, educational barriers,

and he sees her. He really sees her, and he exposes the issue behind the issue. She wasn't there for water. I mean, she was there for water, but she had a thirst no one can quench. Let's dive into her story. Look at verse 13. Jesus answered, but everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks this water I give will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. And this woman said to him, "'Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.'" Now, as a preacher, as a teacher, as a communicator of the gospel and Bible teacher, this is the right place where I would say, "'Now's the time for the altar call. Turn or burn. You need Jesus. You are messed up. You are tore up from the floor up, and now's the time to receive the grace and salvation of Jesus.'" But thank God I'm not Jesus. What does Jesus say? Look at verse 16. He told her,

"'Go and call your husband and come back.'" Huh, what? Why would he do that? Why would Jesus do that? This is my hot take. As I've been researching and studying scripture, I believe that Jesus is addressing the need behind the action. She would have received salvation in that moment, and I firmly believe that it would have addressed the behavior, but not the need. And so many times we come to church and we're trying to address the behavior without taking the time and addressing, what is the need that is making me do this? So Jesus elevates the conversation. It's not just about sin. Baby girl, what's in your heart? What's in your heart? What is that need that is making you thirsty? What's that need that is making you parched? What's that need that is making you dehydrated? And we all know those people. Don't look at them right now. You know those people, they're thirsty, and this woman right here, Jesus is having a conversation with her because she should have been at the well in the morning or in the evening,

but as we will soon discover, she's an outcast. She's an outcast of the outcast, and maybe that's the way that you feel today. Maybe you've come here and you're speaking Christianese, but you've got a need. Maybe you're here today and you've got all the money in the world, but you have a pain that no money can fix. Maybe you're here today and you have health insurance, but you don't got a cure. You got a need. Maybe you're here today with an addiction, and you want to fix it. It's the addiction, but it's not the addiction. It's why you're doing it. And Jesus, Jesus didn't address the divorce with this woman as we will soon discover. He addressed the desire. He's like, girl, you're going from man to man to man to man. Here's the thing, we've all been there. We've all made bad choices and then we think we are bad people. But I want to ask, what is the need that your action was trying to fix or cope with? Like the Samaritan woman, we're coming to wells of today thinking that it will quench our thirst. The well of love and relationship, the well of money and success and achievement,

the well of one more glass of wine and one more bite of chocolate cake, the well of one more shopping purchase on Amazon and Target, one more academic degree. It's the well of one more night with that person. It's the well of one more workout to get that thigh gap. It's the well of one more business deal, one more hit off of a joint, but it leaves us feeling thirsty. And we're looking for things to satiate and quench a need that only Jesus can heal, only Jesus can provide. Let's find out what he says or what she says in verse 17. She says, little old me, I ain't got no mans. I got a husband. Here's this man that's talking to her. And she's like, oh me, no, I had no husband. She replied, Jesus said to her, you're right when you say that you have no husband. The fact is that you've had five husbands and the man that you are with is not your husband. You are in a situation ship. What you have said is quite true. Oh, Jesus came for her. He read her. He read her like day late mail. Verse 19, sir, the woman said, I could see that you're a prophet. I could see that you know things. See, I don't want this to feel far away because all of us have come to this well.

And I want to tell you that Jesus is here. And my fear is that we read an ancient piece of antiquity. It could feel far away. So allow me the liberty and the luxury of creating a scenario that might feel a little more real to us. In my mind's eye, she has a conversation with Jesus and something in her changes. And she says, to be known is to be loved and to be loved is to be known. And you know me, you actually know me. All of me and everything about me. Every thought stored up, every hope, every dread, every hair on top of my head, from my past to my future, all I am and could be, you tell me everything. You tell me about me. And that spoken from any other would bring hate and condemnation, but coming from you, coming from you brings love, hope, mercy, grace, and salvation. I've heard of one to come that could save a wretch like me and here in my presence, you say, I am he. To be known is to be loved and to be loved is to be known. And I just met you, but I love you. I don't know you, but let me get to you. Let me run back to town. Let me tell the others, because there's mothers and brothers and sinners and saints, the good and the bad who should see what you show me, who should hear what you told me,

who should taste what you have given me and feel how you forgave me. To be known is to be loved and to be loved is to be known. Jesus goes after a need, he goes after a desire, and he goes after the truth. And he's still doing it today. Revival happens when living water is replaced with empty wells. Revival happens when living water replaces empty wells. See, she thought her need was water, but Jesus called out the real need. During that time, divorce would be the thing that would be taboo. I mean, if I'm honest with you, still today, specifically within the church, your divorce, you got the scarlet letter, and this woman was divorced five times over. And during this time, divorce was in the favor of the man. A man could divorce a woman for virtually anything. If you look at ancient law, you could divorce a woman if you discovered after marrying her that she had a body issue, a scar, a birthmark, something that you didn't like about her body. You would go to the city center and you would say three times in public, I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you, and it's done. So you can get divorced over body issues. You could divorce a woman for bad attitude. So y'all be careful, y'all be careful. You can divorce a woman if she can't cook.

Some of y'all be divorced real quick, not me though. I can cook, okay. You can divorce me for a bad attitude, but not because of my cooking, okay. You can divorce a woman if you couldn't bear children. And as I was studying scriptures this week, there's a group of theologians that believe that the reason why she was handed from man to man to man, most likely in a family, because law during that time would be that if you were released from one husband, one man, your brother would inherit you. And so she's being passed in the hands of one man to another man to another man. and another man, and here this woman, we see she's discarded, she's unwanted, she's rejected, she's broken, and possibly cannot bear life within. Is that far from us today? Where are you? Are you discarded? Are you rejected? Are you heartbroken? Do you feel like you don't have a covering or provision? Are you disappointed? What in you feels unquenched? I've come to tell you very simply today that Jesus wants to give you living water. This woman spent her whole life looking for satisfaction and validation,

and this text reveals that she has five husbands, and the one that she was living with wasn't even her husband, it was a little side piece, it was a boo thing, okay? It's interesting, it's five husbands plus another man, that's six. Now, I don't wanna get so crazy here, but in biblical numerology, the number six represents man in our finitude, our limited ability, but the number seven, does anyone know what the number seven means? It means wholeness, it means completion, and on the seventh man, the man Jesus, she begins to experience full wholeness and completion. What a man, what a man, what a mighty, mighty good man. And yes, he is. Let me take a minute or two and give much respect to Jesus, okay? This is the scene I want you to dive into, and this is the story of humanity, that we keep on going to wells that will never satisfy us. The new guy that's promising you a new future, you're gonna be thirsty. The job that's offering you success and wealth, you're gonna be thirsty. The pill and the drug that's gonna give you the next high, you're gonna be thirsty. The new contract and the deal that promises you wealth and achievement,

you're gonna be thirsty. The new degree that's gonna promise you a new elevation of status or validation, you're gonna end up thirsty. This leaves us parched and thirsty and dry, but Jesus offers us today living water. See, Jesus was speaking about living water that's eternal life and forgiveness and the presence of God within a person. And when she realized this, it changed everything. We're gonna discover in a second that she actually leaves her jar behind. Before we get into this text, let me give you a little clue here. It's ironic, because this woman goes to the well to get water with a jar, and she leaves the jar where? At the well. The jar represented routine, it represented her thirst and her emptiness. And when someone truly encounters Christ, they discover something powerful. The thing that you thought you needed loses its power. The thing that used to satiate you, you can't even come close to what happens. Revival happens when people stop drinking from empty wells and start receiving living water. When Jesus encounters you, you won't be the same. There's people in this community that can testify, say, the Lord showed up for me when I needed a miracle. The Lord showed up for me when I needed healing.

The Lord showed up for me when I needed comfort. And let me tell you something, what I proffer to you today, I'm not promising you a life of perfection, I'm promising you God's presence, you will not be alone. And our sin and our mistakes separated us from God, but once we are reconciled to him, our life begins to transform. I say it all the time, give God one year, all in, open wide, and see what he can do. And all of this is just to lead us to this point. Everything that I've discussed up until now has been a stepping stone. Everything I have discussed has been a springboard, a setup for this. Revival spreads when transformed people start testifying. Revival spreads when transformed people start testifying. I'm gonna teach a church how to talk back to a preacher. Let me give you a little clue here. When you encourage a preacher, I will release you early to go to brunch, all right? That is the right place to say amen. You're not gassing me up, you're putting faith in the environment. That the spirit of living God is speaking to me and I testify that he is moving. So where has God shown up for your life? Why did you stop talking about it? Did he come through for you when you needed that healing?

Why'd you stop talking about it? Did he show up for you when you needed a financial miracle? Why'd you stop talking about it? When you felt like you were on the verge of divorce with your spouse and Jesus showed up, he sent you to a marriage conference or a therapist or another godly couple to walk alongside you so you didn't kill each other. Why did you stop talking about it? Last week we got to witness life change and one of the people we got to baptize was Vincenzo Santapiero. I got your last name wrong, bro, I'm sorry. Santa Parpio, I got it wrong again, I'm sorry. He was baptized last week but his journey didn't begin last week. It started when Mark and Amber invited Alexis and Vincenzo to church. I'd point out Mark to you right now but he's holding a camera and serving in the ministry of bringing the gospel around the world. in this moment. Mark and Amber invited this beautiful couple to church and what they didn't know was that they were gonna experience the hardest situation of their life. That Alexis would be involved in a car accident and have to be on virtually life support and 55 surgeries to get her back up to speed. I think about what would happen in their life

if they didn't have Mark and Amber who would invite them into this community. If Mark and Amber didn't start talking about what Jesus is doing in their life, where would they be today if Mark and Amber didn't invite them? Look at verse 28. John 4, 28 says this, then leaving her jar, the woman went back to town and said to the people, come see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be Messiah? They came out of town and made their way to them. If it is annoyed you that I did not give you a title for your notes, now is the title. The title is come see a man. Come see a man. Come here, come here. I'm gonna tell you about this man. After meeting Jesus, this woman did something remarkable. She ran back to town, the same town that had rejected her. And when we teach this story, most preachers and teachers and Bible scholars will teach this from the lens of, and I have done this too, the lens of her being reconciled to God, that she got reconciled to God

in this encounter with Jesus and that's beautiful. But that's not the end of the story. The reason why most preachers will stop there is because the story is interesting because her story seemingly ends and then there's this conversation that Jesus has with the disciples about faith and then her story picks back up. That's where I actually wanna focus. I wanna focus on the pick back up because the focus is being on the vertical relationship and reconciliation with God, but we ignore the second part of the story. Not only was she reconciled to God, she was reconciled with her community. There's a vertical reconciliation and a horizontal reconciliation. That is the cross. That is the gospel that we preach. That Alexis and Vincenzo were reconciled to God, but they walked into a horizontal community where we got to walk them through a really tough season. So one conversation comes to one invitation that leads to revival. Now I wanna point something out about this woman and her situation that maybe has crossed your mind intentionally or unintentionally. I think sometimes when it comes to sharing our faith, there's a fear like I'm not gonna know what to say.

You're not alone in that. I'm a pastor and I fear like I'm not gonna know what to say. There's a fear like maybe I don't have that answer. And I love that this woman did not have a theology degree, that she didn't have ministry training and she didn't even have perfect credibility, okay? She just had a testimony. And she said, come see a man who told me everything I ever did. And the Bible says many Samaritans believed because of this woman's testimony. Now think about this. This person, this woman who once had been probably one of the most ashamed people in town was the one to lead people to Jesus. That is the power of your testimony. Revival spreads when transformed people start talking about what Jesus has done. And during this time, a woman's testimony was not counted in court unless there was multiple witnesses. So the fact that a woman, the fact that a Samaritan woman, the fact that a five times over divorced Samaritan woman whose testimony would not be acceptable in court, ushered in revival lets me know all of us are able to do this. So what is stopping you? You are qualified to go out and evangelize. What does evangelize mean? Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. This is what this woman says.

In evangelism, we've gotten it so complicated. What are the four spiritual laws? This is how you lead people to God. Listen, I just wanna follow this woman. In fact, in scripture, it is this woman who was recognized as the first evangelist of the entire book of the Bible. A woman, a divorced woman, a Samaritan woman, an outsider. Sometimes, sometimes we over spiritualize evangelism and I wanna make it simple. My invitation to you is that we actually begin to evangelize. We tell people about Jesus being Messiah and bring somebody to church. There's a seat for a loved one here in this house. We will save them a seat. We want you to be bold and daring and tell your friends and your family what Jesus has done for you. Next week, Pastor Cesar is gonna be opening up the word and we're continuing on in this series because I firmly believe life change happens because of an invitation. We wanna make this easy. Maybe a family member can't come. Next week, we're planning for Easter in three weeks. And we wanna make this so simple. New Barna research shows that if you invite a non-believer to Easter, there's a 78% chance

they're gonna say yes. People are looking to go somewhere for Easter because they know that's the thing to do. So may the odds ever be in your favor, Hunger Games. I want you to show up, I want you to go to the welcome center outside, we have these postcards. You can write a note to your loved one, drop their address, and we will mail it for you. Why? Because your invitation can lead to transformation. So not to freak out. This is how you're gonna evangelize. We're gonna follow the way of our sister. She starts with this, come. The invitation should be to invite people and know about a man, hey, this gospel is for everybody. We must be inclusive in our language and communicate that the gospel is for all of us. Everybody gets to hear the message, come. And then she says this, see a man. So what is this? It is everything that we share should focus on Jesus. It's not about what we do, it's about what Jesus has done for us. Come, see a man, make it about the man, Jesus, who told me everything I ever did. It needs to be a testimony about us. The beauty about what happened with this woman is that no one could deny what happened to her. That's why Revelation gives us the verse

that we overcome by the blood of the lamb and by the word of our testimony. Tell people what Jesus has done for you. And then she ends with this, could this be Christ? I love this so much. She did not force them to accept Jesus. She merely posed an inviting question. And scripture tells us that it was because of her invitation to the community that Jesus was discovered and many people said yes to accepting a relationship with Jesus as their savior. Let's wrap this up by reading John 4, 39. Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony. He told me everything I ever did. So when the Samaritan came to him, they urged him to stay with them and he stayed two days. And because of his words, many more became believers. That's revival. Then they said to the woman, we no longer believe just because of what you said. Now we have heard for ourselves. We know this man really is the savior of the world. Do you know that you've got the power to usher in revival into the lives of your friends and family? Do you know that in your invitation there is powerful transformation that can take place? Because I've seen it in this community. I'm not just seeing it in the pages of antiquity. I'm seeing it in this community

because there's a girl that comes to our community. She's been coming for a couple of years. Her name is Heather Oaks. Well, Heather Oaks came here and she encountered God and she began to tell other people about it. In fact, she invited a friend of hers, a coworker of hers by the name of Ronnie. Ronnie came, encountered God and he began to invite Jacob. Now Jacob comes to church now. He's leading on our staff and our team and the transformation that Jacob has encountered is that he lost his dad while his dad passed away and here in this community, he began to discover an authentic relationship with his true heavenly father and there's healing that's taken place. Okay, no one's gonna clap for that. I got more, I got more. Pastor Caesar, too late, too late, no credit. Pastor Caesar went just to go get high and tight, a little lineup with his barber. His barber is Kevin. Well, Kevin and his wife Lizzie come here to this church and they were kiki-ing and talking about Revere and then there's Gerardo. Gerardo was another barber in the shop and he's like, what are you guys talking about? Pastor Caesar's like, I go to this dope church. You should roll through. Gerardo comes, Gerardo's like, oh, this is pretty dope.

Gerardo starts getting involved. I actually served with Gerardo as he's using his gifts at a homeless shelter in Orange County. That's where I met him and heard his testimony. He's so grateful for Pastor Caesar and now Gerardo, he does a community group in the barber shop that Kevin owns. Let me, oh, it doesn't stop, it doesn't stop. Maybe by the end, you'll be real excited. Let me tell you about Ashley Council. Pastor Caesar, don't be mad at me. She's always gonna be Ashley Council. She married Pastor Caesar. She's Delgado now, I know. Ashley Council Delgado met a woman at her work in a science lab and her name was Karen. She invited Karen to a worship night. At that worship night, Karen experienced a physical healing. She thought it was absolutely bananas and it was crazy so she called her family members and invited them to Revere. Well, she invited her niece, May. Well, May's really awesome and she invited Matt Diaz and from Matt Diaz, Matt Diaz came and got involved and he invited his cousin, Cousin Paul and the whole family. Let me tell you what happens. When the Lord encounters you and you begin just testifying about what God has done, lives are changed. The power of invitation can change somebody's life. And oftentimes we think that life transformation,

some call it revival, happens in stadiums or in churches with mega pastors and microphones and lights, but very often it does not happen like that. It's one conversation with one person starting one movement and becomes a revival and it happens with one invite. The revival that happened in Samaria didn't happen in a synagogue or in a church, but at a well with a divorced woman who was met with the eyes of a loving man who saw her. It's just one invitation away. So I have to ask, could this be you? Could you be the one that invites somebody to experience life transformation? Better question, why is it not you? Has the Lord touched you? Has he healed you? Is he in the act of transforming you? You may not have it all figured out or be holy and perfect, but have you encountered God? Have you tasted of that living water? Why wouldn't you share that with your loved ones? So I'm gonna ask you in this moment, who do you need to invite to the well? I'm not even advocating here at Revere. Some of y'all are watching online or you don't know what to do. Hey, you share your testimony. Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. In a moment, I'm gonna pray.

I'm gonna pray for two things. I'm gonna pray for those who have come to your mind right now in this moment. The Holy Spirit is speaking to you. You gotta invite that coworker or your cousin or your unbelieving spouse. You're gonna invite them. And so it might feel overwhelming. You might feel a little scared and you might need some divine supernatural unction at the junction that happens with the Holy Spirit. You might need an extra dose of the Holy Ghost. And so I'm gonna pray for courage and strength to share your testimony about what God has done in your life. You obey, let the Lord make the response happen. I'm gonna pray for that group in a second. And then I'm gonna pray for those in this room who you've come to this well and you're hearing about living water and yet you have not drank from that living water. Or maybe at one point you were at the well drinking of living water and now you're living back in Samaria doing all those things that you know you shouldn't be doing. Today is the day where you get to come back. To create a sacred and safe place, I'm gonna invite everyone just to close your eyes and bow your head. But you take a moment and I want you to think about who it is

that you know is thirsty. Who in your life is so dehydrated and parched? Who in your life needs to drink of the living water that you have experienced? And then if that is you and you know that there's someone in your life and you're feeling insecure, overwhelmed because you don't know what to say, will you raise your hands so I can pray a prayer of strength and confidence over you? Amazing, hands are going up online. You can go ahead, put the name of your loved one in the chat box or you can put your name and let us know how we can pray for you. Hands are all up over the room. And so Spirit of living God, I pray for every hand that is raised in this room right now. I thank you Lord God that you are gonna give us the names and the faces and the places of the people that we are supposed to invite to the well of living water. I pray that there's a courageousness that comes over your sons and daughters and a powerful Holy Spirit indwelling to share your gospel in a way that is fresh and dynamic and new in Jesus name, amen.
