Brief, But Brilliant — Legacy Work — Rich Wilkerson Jr.

But today we are in part two of our collection, and as we're in part two of our collection, last week was Vision Sunday. And Vision Sunday, we gave all sorts of different projects and different things that we are talking about as a church, what we're headed to. The Bible says, without a vision, people perish. Without a vision, people throw off restraint. I've always wanted to lead this community, describing where it is that we're headed as a church. Because how many of y'all know, speed without direction is reckless. And so if you haven't heard the good news, there's lots of things happening. We're building a building down in South Miami. Make some noise for that. They're all in a high school today. But one of the cool things that we announced is that in 2026, we are going to South Beach with our fifth location, everybody. Make some noise. And so it's the habit of our house and it's the custom of this place that we end the year with really a faith offering. We call it our bricklayers offering. And this year it's on December 7th, December 7th. And today at your chair, there is a second offering envelope. We don't talk a lot about money at Voot Church, but once a year, we are bold as we talk about the vision. And there's a bricklayers offering envelope. And a lot of people mostly give digitally here at Voot Church, but I'm still old school. I'd love for you to take this with you this week, because over the next four weeks, I want you and your family to pray about how you can participate in this offering. We don't think that you should give out of compulsion. We don't think you should give out of manipulation. We don't think that you should give because I make you feel goosebumps by the end of this service. And then you go, now I'm led to give. We think that you should pray about it. We think that you should ask God. And everything you see here at Voot Church, it was built by love, but it was built by sacrifice. And I believe the future is bright for us as a church. And so on December 7th, we're asking that everybody who loves Voot Church would participate. It's never been about equal amounts. It's always been about equal sacrifice. Somebody said, amen, right there. That we would all participate in this offering and bricklayers offering is already opened up. So you can start giving even right now, but take this with you today, December 7th, this collection will end with that. But last week on vision Sunday, as we were talking, I told you the story of the apostle Paul, formerly known as Saul, that he has this blinding light experience, but then a man by the name of Ananias is spoken to by God. Ananias obeys. And with it, God begins to do a work in Paul's life. How do y'all know? We don't all get to be Paul, but every one of us, we can be Ananias. We can all say yes to the

call. And the anchor verse that we've been looking at is Psalm 102 verse 18. Let me read it to you. Let this be written for a future generation that a people, this is deep, not yet created, may praise the Lord. And the phrase the Lord gave me that we're talking right now in this collection is called legacy work. That the work we're doing here after 10 years is now legacy work. Give God a day. He can change your life. Give God a decade. He can change a legacy. Is there anybody at VU Church that would say, I want to be a part of legacy work that what we're doing today is about a future generation that's not even yet created. So today I want to give you one little verse. It's a little verse, but it has a long revelation. It's small, but it's got a big impact. Let me read you one verse. I'm going to preach one verse today. And I think I can preach it in the time they've given me. Psalm 90 verse 12. Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Now, this is a good scripture that you could memorize and you could learn. It's brief, but it's brilliant. Someone say brief, but brilliant. In fact, that's what I want to teach about today. I want to preach brief, but brilliant. Brief, but brilliant. Part two of our collection, legacy work. Brief, but brilliant. When I look around at society today, oftentimes what I notice is that we are living in a world that teaches you how to run only one kind of a race. And the race that culture is teaching us is a sprint. Everything is about getting to the next thing. Everybody I meet, even those that don't have a job, don't have any kids, everybody's busy. How are you doing? Busy. Okay. You 12, bro. Everybody is hustling hard. Everybody is moving from one thing to the next thing. Bills, meetings, problems, notifications, drama. Listen to me. Everything urgent, nothing eternal. Everything urgent, Urgent, but nothing eternal the point of this collection that we would end our year in Expectation of where it is that God is taking us is that we might start 2026 in a moment of execution that we could run quickly towards what it is that God has for us But you must understand that when you get a biblical perspective We are not running a sprint and we're not even running a marathon The whole point of what we must understand as the body of Christ is that we are running a relay race That there is a generation that has come before us and whether you want to admit it or not There is a people not yet even created that will come after us and our job is to pass the baton of faith Come on, somebody make a little bit of noise

And so we live in a time right now where the world teaches us and trains us to live for now But understand God created you for legacy That you would leave a legacy that after you're long gone. What does your life continue to say? The now is loud Legacy is quiet The now is quick, but listen to me legacy always takes time The now feels big That's what urgency feels like it feels so big but legacy actually is big And if you're ever gonna be a person who actually steps into understanding legacy You cannot talk about legacy and not talk about timing I want to teach a little bit if I can today on on Timing from a biblical perspective now when you start talking Timing and time this is a hard topic to teach in Miami Because we are timing challenged, okay You know in Miami. I don't think Miami operates even on Eastern Standard Time We operate on eventually Eventually eventually you invite someone to be somewhere at 7 p.m. You know, like listen ain't nobody late in Miami, everyone's just optimistically flexible I Have to reframe this in this city. I've been here for so long. I got to reframe stuff, you know You don't get it pastor rich. I'm from Puerto Rico. You do understand Being late is not an ethnicity. Okay Be there at 7 p.m. Okay, maybe yes. Yes. I'll be there at 7 p.m Which really means there yes actually means if the traffic breaks if the rain stops if the Lord wills it Maybe just maybe I might be there. We'll just have to see what takes place People who say they're five minutes away in Miami that could mean a lot of things That could mean you're pulling to the parking lot. That could mean you're getting into the shower Miami is time challenged and the thing about time that we don't like to recognize is that

Time only moves in one direction forward It doesn't stop because you get stressed It doesn't pause with your problems. It doesn't all of a sudden clinch up because you're in a challenge No time moves forward time is Moving someone say it's moving And what you learn the older you get is that you can't stop this train time is Precious time is valuable ask any parent who's got little kids in their house I have four kids all under the age of seven. I have to hide in my bathroom. I Can't find ten minutes anywhere in my house the other day I locked myself in the bathroom and every one of my children except for wolf who can't talk yet came and just knocked on the Door dad dad. I'm like But all the parents know you can't be in the bathroom for ten minutes because if you come out in ten minutes You will be shocked what these kids did in the house My god, you colored on the walls. Why are you got socks on your hands? Dad is ice cream of vegetable shut up Just give me ten minutes in the bathroom You start to see time is precious time is valuable it's fascinating because I've been in church most of my life and I've been leading this church now for ten years and When we come to this collection every year for the most part, we've got such a generous church It's one of the privileges of our house It's one of the values of our house But every once in a while whenever the church starts to talk about money people get real weird when you talk about money in church Oh, you can't talk about money in church. You know, what's interesting to me. Nobody gets mad at you talking about time in church Why would that be I think it's because each Even in the body of Christ today, people value money more than they value time. You do realize you can lose money and make it back, but you cannot make your time back. Time is the most valuable commodity we have on the planet, and if we're going to be a

church that leaves a legacy, we're going to have to use our time wisely. Somebody clap your hands. Make some noise. Brief, but brilliant, brief, but brilliant. Today we're looking at one brief verse in the Bible. It's Psalm 90. I want to give you a little bit of context before I begin to teach from it, because once again, it's brief, but it's brilliant. As I preach this verse, please understand that Psalm 90 is the oldest psalm we have. This psalm was not written by King David, who wrote most of the psalms. It wasn't written from the palace. It wasn't written from luxury. Rather, this psalm was written by the man named Moses, and it was written in the wilderness. It's from the wilderness that Moses prays, God, teach me to number my days. Most scholars would tell us that the context of this principle that he's teaching, the picture or the backdrop would be from Numbers 13 and 14 at the great rebellion of Kadeshah Barnea. Some of you know the story, but the story is, is that God sent 12 spies into the promised land. They were meant to move into the future, inhabit the land. But as the spies came back, 10 of them saw the giants in the land and they said, we look like grasshoppers to those giants. When they gave the report to the camp, everybody was full of fear because fear is contagious. There was only two men, Joshua and Caleb, who had a different spirit, who brought a different report. I don't really care what the rest of the churches in America are saying. I want VU Church to bring back a good report. If God has planted us right here in Miami, Florida, I believe Miami, Florida is ripe for revival. I believe that every giant and every obstacle, I don't care how much real estate is.

If God said we could have it, come on, I believe we can do it. Everybody got some faith that good days are in front of us. But these 10 spies put a bad report in the land and with it, God brought about a judgment. Do you know the judgment? This is crazy. Read this. This is Numbers chapter, bring it up on the screen for me if you can. Numbers 14 verse 29, in this wilderness, this is what God says, your bodies will fall. Every one of you, 20 years old or more, who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me, not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home except Caleb and Joshua. So it was the only two who had a good report, who saw the situation with faith that stepped into the future. The other 10, and watch this, not just 10, but 600,000 different men all died in that wilderness over 40 years. You say, Rich, why are you bringing this up? I'm bringing this up because Moses is writing this psalm from that perspective, from that place. Can you imagine? Every single day he wakes up, he's waking up to a camp that's shrinking. Friends dying, leaders dying, fathers dying, a generation dying. This is the man who writes, Lord, teach us to number our days. Why? Because if you want to make your days count, you must count your days. If you want to make your days count, you must count your days. Moses is saying, I've seen what happens when you don't count your days. I've seen what happens when you don't walk wisely. I've seen what happens when you don't have a healthy perspective. You walk in circles, you miss the moment, you bury your purpose, you waste your life. This psalm is the result of lost potential.

What I want to do in this vision collection is I want to tell you we've got potential, but the only way we see the potential come to pass is when we act out in faith. Come on somebody, clap your hands. Clap your hands. Moses says, teach us to number our days. Why? Because they didn't and they died wandering. We're not a wandering church. We have direction. We are called to legacy work. We're called to legacy work. I'm so grateful for all that God has done in the past, but I'm telling you what, the future is brighter than the past. I'm so thankful for all the great stories of the past, but as your pastor, let me just say, where we are going is better than where we have been. Let me just make a couple of observations that we talk about legacy. Write this verse down. Legacy begins with perspective. Legacy begins with perspective. Notice Moses teach us to number our days. This word teach in the Hebrew is to train, it's to develop. It's not so much as information as much as it's formation. God, I don't want to just be informed. I want to be formed by your word. He doesn't say lengthen my days or multiply my days or slow down my days. No Lord, teach me to number them. In other words, God, give me perspective. God, let me see life the way that you see it. Listen, you can't build legacy with unnumbered days because unnumbered days feels infinite and what feels infinite is treated as inexpensive.

But what is numbered becomes valuable and what is valuable gets, watch this, invested. I want to try to illustrate this to you today. Let me see if I can show you this. Right here, I had the team put together. These are hard to find by the way. This is a dying commodity right here. Inside this jar are 1,440 pennies. You hear that? Who wants these pennies? No, it's like, we're good, Rich. But I had them grab 1,440 pennies because I want to try to illustrate for a moment. That's how many minutes you get every day. You're given 1,440 minutes every day. But watch this. That's how fast they get spent. That's the sound often of your life. Every single day, every penny represents a minute. The question is, what are you doing with the minutes? Because oftentimes we're celebrating the decade of ministry here at VU Church, but God doesn't give you decades. He gives you days and your days are made up of minutes and every morning you wake up, you get another 1,440 minutes. I like it as Moses is talking here because it says, teach me to number the days. But when you study that word number, this word number is not about counting, but rather it's about weighing. It's about ascribing value. God, teach me to value my days. I wonder, what's a day weigh? What's a day weigh? I don't know.

Ask somebody who just got a call today from their doctor that they have cancer, what's a day weigh? Ask somebody who just buried a loved one, what's a day weigh? Ask somebody who just got married, what's a day weigh? A day weighs something, but if you're going to actually begin to step into legacy, if you're going to number your days, you're going to actually have to put value on it, weight on it, and understand God changes legacies one day at a time. I want you to write this down. You only invest what you value. You only invest what you value. Don't tell me that you care about your body, but you still eat like trash. Don't tell me that your spouse is number one in your life when you spend more time on your phone than you do with your spouse. Don't tell me you're looking for godly wisdom when you never even open up your Bible. Why? Because what you value is what you will invest into. It's what you'll care about. It's what you'll pay attention to. I think when I think about a day, and I wanted to use pennies because pennies seem so small and we don't even really use pennies anymore, but I got five little pennies right here. That's just five minutes, just five minutes. Here's what I've learned, small decisions become big destinies. You've got to begin to look at it saying, man, all I get is 1,440 pennies every single day and they go quick, but five minutes can make a big difference. It's amazing what five minutes of prayer will do. It's amazing what five minutes in God's word will do in your life. It's amazing what five minutes with a faithful friend can do across your entire day if you'll invest it properly. What's a day way? What's a day way?

James said, your life is but a vapor. It's here one day and gone the next. Your life, to say the least, is brief. It's pennies in a jar, but it's these small little decisions that will determine a big destiny. Some of you, maybe you're new to VU Church, and I'm so grateful that you're coming to our community. I'm so grateful that you're, you're getting your faith integrated with other believers. And now today, 10 years in, you can look around and it's easy to walk through and be like, wow, they own properties and they got buildings and there's four locations and they're going to a fifth location. And you're like, wow, this is really, really big. But listen to me, it didn't start big. When God wants to do something big, he always starts small. When God wants to use your life, he always says, what do you have in your hand? God, I got pennies, but God can turn pennies into million dollar dreams if you'll invest it in the right thing. I think the more we grow as a church, I'm always trying to take people backwards because those that started in the apartment with me that are still here today, they don't look around and say, oh, it's so big. They value how it began. They recognize that it was pennies in a jar. It's minutes. God changed my life. All right. Then invest your minutes. God changed the next decade for VU Church. Okay, then give me your days. It's not just the fact that legacy is beginning with perspective. It's that legacy is shaped by character.

Legacy is shaped by character. Character is such a key word that we should get into a heart because often the worldly view of legacy is I'm going to leave valuables for the next generation. Well, you can leave valuables, but not leave any values. Let me leave my kids money. Well, you can leave money and still leave a mess. I want to leave all my children instructions. You can leave instruction, but absolutely no inspiration. Look at what Proverbs 10.7 says. This is so good. The memory, not the resume, not the accolades, not the accomplishments, the memory of the righteous is a blessing. The memory. It's just one penny at a time. Just drop in one penny. Can I be a blessing? Can I build my character? One decision at a time. One little moment at a time. My dad used to always tell me, Rich, it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and all it takes is one dumb decision to ruin it. May we be a church that has character. Listen to me. If you have character, you won't become a character. I thought that was a bar. I got that in my prayer closet. I was like, oh my God. Because character means the real you. When nobody else is around, who are you becoming? What does your life say?

Because who you are preaches louder than what you say. I don't care what words come out of your mouth. What are the actions of your life? How are you investing the minutes and the days that God has given you? I firmly believe that we must wake up, that life is brief. It's difficult because everything in your house, everything in your house, like open up your fridge, the eggs, the milk, your credit cards, even your shampoo, I just learned, it all has an expiration date on it. You can see it clearly. But the most important thing in your house is you and there is no visible expiration date. You don't know if you get 40 more years. You don't know if you get 40 more days. You don't know if you get four more minutes. We don't know what tomorrow holds. But when you recognize there's an expiration date on your life, all of a sudden things start to matter that maybe you're not paying attention to. Suddenly I should be a person of forgiveness. Suddenly I should be a person of generosity. Suddenly obedience matters. Suddenly legacy matters. Suddenly eternal things actually matter. They matter. So God teach me to number, to put value, to put weight on my days. Why? Because watch what happens here. This is so good. 90 verse 12. Can you bring that scripture up again? Teach us to number our days that we may gain, here's the key word, a heart of wisdom, wisdom.

You really can't be brilliant in life if you're not first wise in life. John Wayne, the old American actor said, life is tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid. I think that's good because being married is tough, even tougher if you're stupid. Being a parent is tough, even tougher if you're stupid. I know it's a mean word, but I'm going to keep saying it. Being a boss is tough, even tougher if you're stupid. You have to grow in wisdom. But wisdom isn't mere intelligence. Wisdom is a character word. It's a character, it's not about having information. It's about knowing what to do with that information. It's not about just knowing what to say. Wisdom tells you when to say it. We gotta be a church that grows in wisdom and Moses is letting you know, hey, your life is brief, but you can be brilliant if you'll number your days. You can grow in wisdom. Anybody wanna be wise out there? That's what Solomon prayed, God, give me wisdom to lead your people. Sometimes we're asking for shallow blessings. God, make me rich. God, give me a job. How about if you get wisdom, you'll get all those things? How about if you get those things and you don't have wisdom, you're gonna lose all those things? No, God, make us wise as a church. God, give us character as a church. Help us to integrate, help us to grow,

help us to live a brilliant life for you. Why? Because life is hard, especially if you're stupid. Lastly, write this down, write this down. Legacy is built by sowing. Legacy is built by sowing. What you sow determines what you show. This is the Bible, Galatians chapter six, verse seven. We're gonna teach on some of these things over the next couple of weeks, but I wanna open up your heart today to this. This is what Galatians chapter six, verse seven says. Whatever a man sows, he will also reap. So how many of y'all know? Sow forgiveness, you're gonna reap healing. Sow generosity, you're gonna reap an opportunity. Sow wisdom, you reap stability. Sow prayer, you reap transformation. What you sow is what you reap. And so you got a jar full of 1,440 pennies, but that's your life. I think you gotta get another jar, and I would call it the future jar. This jar represents the future. This jar represents a people not yet created. This jar represents a people that aren't even here yet. And can I invest, can I sow into the future? Can I sow into people that are not here? Can I sow into tomorrow? Can I write things down today

that others will praise God for tomorrow? If we're gonna be a people of legacy, it's a brief life, but friends, it could be a brilliant life. You can walk in wisdom. You can sow into others' future. You can pay it forward so others, they can hear the gospel. They can be a part of it. You know, for me, I have a little basic generosity framework and I was trying to be cute with it this week. How many of you in your car, you have a sun pass? Anyone got a sun pass where you're at? Yeah, man, you gotta get that thing, bro. They'll get you if you don't got that, you know? Sometimes I'm like, I didn't even know I was on that road. Y'all charge me, okay? Someone's watching, you know? Someone's watching. But the sun pass here in Florida represents the toll roads here in South Florida. And I found it so interesting that when we're paying our toll on whatever highway you are on, it's not just about merely paying down the debt of yesterday it's actually about the maintenance of tomorrow. It's actually about the building and the construction of new roads. What does a road do? A road takes us into the future.

It takes us from one point to another point. It paves the way so we can step into, watch this, a bright future. I think in church life, I think it's just good as we're coming around the year end. So many in church, so many brand new here to VU. How's this all happen? It happens because people love Jesus and then out of their love for Jesus, it wells up in a heart of generosity. So let me just give you my framework for generosity of how I sow. I believe first and foremost in this principle. I wouldn't call it a law. I believe in a principle. I think that Jesus at the cross, when he said it is finished, I think everything is finished. I don't believe in generational curses. I don't believe that somehow I'm gonna be cursed if there's some, Jesus took my curse. Somebody said amen out there. But I believe in principles. I believe in principles that outlast even the mosaic law. And I think the first thing here is this word, is the T and for me it's a tithe. And tithing for me is trust. The Bible says, I never seen the righteous forsaken. I give the first 10th of my income over to God. Not because I have to, because I get to.

You don't have to do this. There's no obligation. You can come to VU and never do this. What I would encourage you with is that if you love this place, that you would begin to grow in what I would call percentage giving. Maybe you're not up for 10% right now. Could you give? 1%? Could you give 3%? What I like about the tithe, which means a 10th. I had a friend one time, he's like, I want to start tithing. I was like, tithing, what is that? That's detergent. Tithe just means 10th. What I like is, is that it forces you to budget your generosity. Man, when you start budgeting, you start walking into financial freedom. So I see it as a principle and I would encourage you. I've just in my life discovered that I would rather trust God on 90% of my income than trust myself on 100% of my income. Come on somebody, anybody believe that? So it's got to trust you. It's like Sabbath for me. I got to trust you. I'm going to get more done six days a week than I can on my own seven days a week. Your boy is Chick-fil-A up in here. But it's also the O, which is offering. Sometimes God, he calls me to something and I would say, this is an act of obedience. That God, I would obey you. God, I trust you, but I obey you that from time to time you minister and you speak to me. I want to give above and beyond. I want to sow into the future. I want a legacy. But then I think this third letter is the letter L, and I think this is legacy. This is sacrifice. This is love for the future. That's the year-end offering. The year-end offering is not a tithe. The year-end offering, the bricklayer's offering is about, God, we love the future. God, we want to open a location on South Beach. God, we want to see the building built. We don't want to spend time talking every week on Sundays about bills and trying to manipulate people to giving. We just love where you're taking us. We love the direction of this house. And so God, we want to sow into it. Come on somebody, clap your hands. I like this service. Y'all are kind. But watch this. The Lord spoke to me this week. There's another L. And the other L for the toll is light. And you know what light represents? It represents

something that's brilliant. Something that shines. Something that can't be unnoticed. It's brilliant. This is the toll. This is about the future. This is how we pave the way. Look at what Jesus said in Matthew 5 verse 16. So I can remind you. In the same way, let your light, VU Church, shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Look at what he says here in this other passage. This is verse 14. You, VU Church, are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Do you hear that? We're called to be light. We're called to shine bright. We're called to be brilliant. What's amazing is tonight, if you look up into the sky, you will see the brilliance, or you will see the stars shine their light. Here's what's crazy, is most of the stars that you are looking at, when you see their light, in many cases, that light began a long time ago. A year ago. A decade ago. In some cases, thousands of years ago. In some cases, those stars that you're seeing with your naked eye have already burned out, but the light is still moving forward. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second, and even at that speed, the light hit in your eyes tonight might have left that star even before you were born. The brilliance is still traveling. The glow outlived their burning. These pennies over here, they represent minutes. But what I love about our God is that when we sow into God's house, when we sow into God's work, when we operate out of generosity, the smallest part of your life, the minutes of your life, he can take these minutes and turn them into miles. The moment you sow them, these little pennies, they start acting like light. That what we're doing here as a community, it was done before us, and I believe until Jesus returns, it's going to keep going on after us. But right now, the baton is in our hand, and our giving is like light. They might not know your name, but your light can glow for generations to come. Your life is brief, but it can still be brilliant. Come on. It can still be brilliant. We can be wise. We can gain perspective. We don't have to be in the rat race of sprinting. We can recognize and say, man, I'm a... I'm a part of a great company, the Church of Jesus Christ. And I'm a part of legacy work, and I don't know how many days he's gonna give me, but I'm gonna put weight on it, I'm gonna value it, I'm gonna invest, I'm getting a new perspective. God, make me a man of character.

And God, may I sow into the future. Moses died, I don't know if you know the story, but Moses didn't get into the Promised Land. But Moses was still a man of legacy work, because he sowed into another guy. His name was Joshua. And Moses gave Joshua everything that he had. And sometimes we might not be rich in our bank accounts, but all of us, we have the opportunity that we can be rich in relationship. That we would prop up another generation to come after us. That we would leave them with more wisdom, more joy, more peace, more resource than how we got it. This is legacy work. Joshua took the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua stepped in, Joshua stood on the shoulders of Moses, and he went further and faster. Why? Because we serve the God, not of individuals, but we serve the God of generations. And so it is with me, and so it is with you. That's who our God is. I want, VU Church, for however long God has us as a community, it might be brief. In fact, it is brief when you think about eternity. But man, it doesn't stop us from being brilliant. We can be brilliant. Today, as you're here in our church, I don't know what you're facing. I don't know what it is that you're up against.

What I know is this, is that if you'll throw your life in the hands of God, he will carry you every step of the way. You start talking about the past, you start talking about the future. It's amazing, right? Yesterday's history, tomorrow's a mystery. Death is a certainty. All we have is the present, which is an opportunity. And today, maybe you're worried about the future. Maybe you hear me describing these things we're gonna do as a church, and you're like, yo, man, I don't even, I don't know, man. I'm just trying to pay my own bills. I'm just trying to keep up in my own life. I hear you. But I want to encourage you in a God who understands all things timing. Come on. I want to encourage you in a God who exists outside of time. He can redeem your past. He can give you strength in your present, and he's already living in your tomorrow. So good, so good. So good. Sometimes, on Saturday night, when I'm getting ready to preach, sometimes I'll hit some of my pastor friends in Australia. They're 14 hours ahead of us,

and sometimes I'll just shoot a text, how's tomorrow? How's tomorrow looking? What's God doing in your church tomorrow?
