- There we go. Good morning. - Hi. - What is this? - It's a privilege to be here with you all this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - I'm thankful to God for another opportunity to gather together to worship Him. (speaking in foreign language) - If you have your Bible, go ahead and turn with me to Psalm 84. (speaking in foreign language) - We're in the middle of a series called The Blessed Life. (speaking in foreign language) - And we're learning what the Bible says about what it means to be truly blessed. (speaking in foreign language) - But before we read our passage, let's go to the Lord in prayer. (speaking in foreign language) - Heavenly Father. (speaking in foreign language) - Thank you so much for the opportunity to gather together this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - Father, I just ask that you please bless the reading and teaching of your word this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - Please move me out of the way, Lord. (speaking in foreign language) - Please speak to us through your word this morning.
(speaking in foreign language) - Bless our hearts. (speaking in foreign language) - We love you, Jesus, and it's in your precious name, I pray. (speaking in foreign language) - There's no place I would rather be. (speaking in foreign language) How would you finish that sentence? (speaking in foreign language) - What is that place for you? (speaking in foreign language) - Think about it. (speaking in foreign language) - What's the place that when you're there, you're thinking there's no place I would rather be? (speaking in foreign language) - What comes to mind? (speaking in foreign language) - Is it corporate worship? (speaking in foreign language) - Is it being with the people of God to worship Him? (speaking in foreign language) - Psalm 84 was a song that was sung by the Israelites as they made the journey to Jerusalem to worship God in the temple. (speaking in foreign language) - It's a song that expresses a heart that longs for God Himself. (speaking in foreign language)
- This is a song that expresses a heart that is devoted to worshiping God in the temple with the people of God. (speaking in foreign language) - There's no place the psalmist would rather be. (speaking in foreign language) - Let's read verses one through four together. (speaking in foreign language) - How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts. (speaking in foreign language) - My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord. My heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. (speaking in foreign language) - Even the sparrow finds a home in the swallow and nest for herself where she may lay her young at your altar, O Lord of hosts, my king and my God. (speaking in foreign language) - Blessed are those who dwell in your house ever singing your praise. (speaking in foreign language) - What is the psalmist long for? (speaking in foreign language) - He longs with all of his being to be in the presence of God. (speaking in foreign language) - He longs to be in the temple worshiping the living God. (speaking in foreign language) - God is omnipresent. (speaking in foreign language)
- Which means he is everywhere all the time. (speaking in foreign language) - He's fully present everywhere. (speaking in foreign language) - He's always with us. (speaking in foreign language) - There's never a time or place God is not present with us. (speaking in foreign language) - He's not confined to a physical building. It was the place where the people of God could gather together to worship Him and enjoy His manifest presence. When this is where the psalmist longed to be. He longed to enjoy the manifest presence of God and worship Him with the people of God. It's the place where He wanted to be and stay. He even envies the birds because the birds would make their nests and the rafters and the cracks of the temple. They were near the altars of the Lord all the time. And that's where He longed to be. He longed to be and stay in the presence of His King and His God. This is the heart of a blessed man. A blessed man longs for the house of the Lord. That's the first point. Blessed are those who dwell in the house of the Lord. Blessed are those who dwell in the house of the Lord ever singing your praise. The word blessed means happy. Happy are those who dwell in the house of the Lord. Everyone wants to be happy. But the majority of the people are pursuing happiness in all the wrong places. Alfredo talked about this last week. Many seek to find happiness and fulfillment in worldly things. Comfort, sex, relationships, work, money, fame, status, vacations, vacations, sports, material things, cars, furniture, jewelry, clothing.
We all know that none of these things bring true lasting happiness. True lasting happiness is found in God alone. Happy is the one who enjoys communion with God and His people as a result of His grace. This is where every true believer desires what He desires and seeks. Listen to the words of David, a popular passage, on 27 verse 4. One thing have I asked of the Lord and that I will seek after, that I made well in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. That He may be in the presence of God and gaze upon the beauty of God. He was deeply devoted to worshiping God. He was deeply devoted to worshiping God with the people of God. And this is the heart of a blessed man. He loves God, and He loves the people of God. Sadly, we live in a time where many don't value corporate worship. According to one survey, 44% of professing Christians said that attending church is not an essential part of their face. [speaking in Spanish] 44% [speaking in Spanish] Neglecting corporate worship is not an option for believers. [speaking in Spanish] The Bible specifically commands us not to neglect gathering together. [speaking in Spanish] And one evidence that you've been born again is that you love gathering with the people of God to worship Him. [speaking in Spanish] The Christian life was never meant to be lived in isolation. [speaking in Spanish] We were created to be with one another. [speaking in Spanish] To encourage one another.
To build one another up. To spur one another on toward love and good deeds. [speaking in Spanish] I'm sad when I hear people say they don't need church to love God. [speaking in Spanish] Because if they really loved Him, then they would love being with the people of God as well. [speaking in Spanish] But it's also possible to be present on Sunday mornings and not really be present. [speaking in Spanish] You might be physically present, but you're thinking about what you're going to have for lunch, or you're more excited about the football game coming on. [speaking in Spanish] And for some people coming to church on Sunday is just something they check off their list of things to do. [speaking in Spanish] But what we're doing here this morning, brothers and sisters, is a gift from God. [speaking in Spanish] Because corporate worship is how the Lord communes with us and blesses us through the ordinary means of grace. [speaking in Spanish] [speaking in Spanish] We're blessed when we sit under the reading and the preaching of God's Word together. [speaking in Spanish] This is how we behold the beauty and the glory of Lord. [speaking in Spanish] This is how we grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ together. [speaking in Spanish] And we're blessed as we sing songs and hymns of praise together. [speaking in Spanish] We're blessed as we pray together. [speaking in Spanish] And we're blessed as we enjoy the sacraments like baptism and the Lord's Supper together.
[speaking in Spanish] And as we continually enjoy these means of grace together. [speaking in Spanish] And we'll cultivate a heart like the one described in this song. [speaking in Spanish] Look at verses five through nine. [speaking in Spanish] Blessed are those whose strength is in you and whose heart are the highways designed. [speaking in Spanish] As they go through the valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs. The early rain also covers it with pools. [speaking in Spanish] They go from strength to strength. Each one appears before God and Zion. [speaking in Spanish] So blessed are those whose strength is in the Lord. [speaking in Spanish] That's the second point. [speaking in Spanish] Surprise, surprise. So, bless us all, peace out. So every year the Israelites would travel to Jerusalem for annual festivals. When they traveled through a place called the Valley of Baca, this translated to the Valley of Tears. This was a long and difficult journey through desert terrain. But they were blessed because God gave them the strength to persevere and he graciously provided what they needed to reach Zion and the Valley itself was only temporary. They were just passing through on their way to Zion. Their hearts were set on being in the presence of the Lord. Blessed are those whose strength is in you and whose heart are the highways to Zion.
I told Hronas that he should start a band and call it highways to Zion. This is describing a deep, God-given spiritual longing. They were devoted to worshiping the Lord. That's what they loved and longed for. That's what they pursued. That was their direction. Zion was their destination. And the journey was difficult, but the Lord strengthened them and sustained them. And by his grace they appeared before him in Zion. Even though we don't have to take a long journey to the temple to meet with God. We all go through the Valley of Tears. We all face trials of various kinds. It's part of life. The blessed life is not a life of ease and comfort. It's hard, it's painful, it's a reflection, it's suffering, it's lamenting, it's sorrow. There's lots of tears, but we are not alone. He is with us, and we don't depend on our own strength to endure. We are completely dependent on him to strengthen us and sustain us. Through it all we learn to trust him more and more. And by his grace we persevere until we finally appear before him. One day we'll see him face to face. And we'll enjoy perfect uninterrupted fellowship with him forever. We'll join all the people of God, from every nation, tribe, and language, and we'll worship him together forever. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer, give ear, O God of Jacob. Behold our shield, O God, look on the face of your anointed. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a son and shield, the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
For the Lord God is a son and he is a son and he is a son and he is a son. - In verses eight and nine, the psalmist is praying and pleading with the Lord for help. - He addresses him as the God of hosts. - El llama el dios de los acertitos. - He's acknowledging God's supreme power and authority over everyone and everything. - He rules and reigns supreme over all heavenly and earthly forces. - He also addresses him as God of Jacob. - Ita amela de jamel dios de hacob. - He's remembering God's faithfulness throughout all the generations. - He knows God abounds and steadfast love and faithfulness. - And he knows that God hears the prayers of his people. - He knows the Lord is their ultimate defender. - And he's requesting the protection in favor of the Lord.
- And then in verse 10, he expresses how much he enjoys being with God. - In a reciculate, he'll express a quanto this fruit estar con en señor. - He says, one day in the presence of God, enjoying him is better than a lifetime of anything this world has to offer. - He says, he would even rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord than Juel among the wicked. - This is the heart of a humble believer. - Estes el corafón de un cresiento mille. - This is the heart of a person who is satisfied in God. - He knows worldly pleasures will never fulfill. - And only God himself will be enough. - Que solo dios mismos, sera sufifiente. - God himself is enough. - Que dios mismos es sufifiente. - The wicked desire and pursue worldly pleasures. - E desire and pursue wealth. - E gos buscan y percigen la regueta.
- E desire and pursue recognition. - E gos de señor el reconofimiento. - E desire and pursue fame and self-exaltation. - They don't love God. - E gos no amana dios. - They love themselves and they live for themselves. - Samana si mismos, y diem percí mismos. - But the one who's satisfying God says, "I don't want or need any of that." - God himself is all I want and I need. - David says in Psalm 16 verse 11. - You make known to me the path of life. In your presence, there is fullness of joy at your right hand or pleasures forevermore. - We were created to find our ultimate satisfaction in God himself. - We must create a spara incontrar mestra maxima satis facción en dios mismos. - And God alone is the source of true lasting joy and happiness.
- He's the one who gives us life and breath and everything. - He's the one who makes the sun shine to give us warmth and light. - He is our shield. - El es musto scudon. - He protects us from the schemes of the enemy. - And he's gracious to us. - El es tiene gratia para con nosotros. - He transforms us by his grace. - El nos transforma por sugratia. - And he gives us a new heart. - Enos dancorra fánnovo. - A heart that loves him. - Enos dancorra fán que la llama. - Heart that longs for him. - Enos dancorra fán que la nela. - Heart that submits to him. - Enos dancorra fán que se sometia. - Heart that praises him. - Enos dancorra fán que la llaba. - Heart that delights in him. - And he leads and he guides us.
- Enos gia, enos gia. - And he provides us with every good thing that we need along the way. - James 1, verse 17. coming down from the Father of Lights. (speaking in foreign language) - He's the supplier of all that is truly good. (speaking in foreign language) - And as verse 11 says, (speaking in foreign language) - He doesn't withhold any good thing from those who know him and love him and desire to obey him. (speaking in foreign language) - But thanks be to God. (speaking in foreign language) - We don't have to make any long journeys to the temple to meet with him. (speaking in foreign language) - The temple was just a shadow. (speaking in foreign language) - It pointed ahead to a greater spiritual reality. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus, who is God with us. (speaking in foreign language) - He came to us in the person of Christ. (speaking in foreign language) - He is God in human flesh. (speaking in foreign language)
- As Paul says in Colossians two, verse nine. (speaking in foreign language) - For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus is the true temple of God. (speaking in foreign language) - He is the bodily dwelling place of God's full presence. (speaking in foreign language) - As one pastor says. (speaking in foreign language) - The temple that the Old Testament saints long for arrived in the incarnate Son of God. (speaking in foreign language) - And he is the priest, the sacrifice, and the temple all at the same time. (speaking in foreign language) - So under the old covenant. (speaking in foreign language) - The high priest would offer sacrifices in the temple on behalf of God's people. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - They would sacrifice a lamb and then sprinkle the blood of lamb on the mercy seat to atone for the sins of the people. (speaking in foreign language) - But this had to be repeated over and over. (speaking in foreign language) - It was a temporary system. (speaking in foreign language)
- And it all pointed forward to Christ. (speaking in foreign language) - He came to be the once for all sacrifice for the sins of his people. (speaking in foreign language) - He came and lived a life of perfect obedience. (speaking in foreign language) - He obeyed every single commandment given by God perfectly. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Absolutely perfect and thought word indeed. (speaking in foreign language) - He was a lamb without blemish. (speaking in foreign language) - And then he willingly went to the cross as our perfect substitute. (speaking in foreign language) - He shed his blood. (speaking in foreign language) - And this had to happen. (speaking in foreign language) - Because there's no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood. (speaking in foreign language) - And he was buried and raised on the third day. (speaking in foreign language) - And as Asalma says in verse 12. (speaking in foreign language) - Oh Lord of hosts. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.
(speaking in foreign language) - Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord. (speaking in foreign language) - That's the third point. (speaking in foreign language) - By grace when we trust in Christ alone. (speaking in foreign language) - All our sins are forgiven. (speaking in foreign language) - Because the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. (speaking in foreign language) - And his perfect righteousness is imputed to us. (speaking in foreign language) - We are justified. (speaking in foreign language) - By his grace alone. (speaking in foreign language) - His faith alone. (speaking in foreign language) - In Christ alone. (speaking in foreign language) - And the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our hearts. (speaking in foreign language) Mr. Scoratones, second Merton, and La Morada del Senor. And this is why scripture describes our body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. We have died to sin. Emos mordo al peccadon.
We are alive in Christ. Y arastamos víbos encriston. We have the spirit of Christ dwelling in us. Enos esperito de cristo abitando en nosotros. And we are filled with all the fullness of God. Isomos jenos de la plenitus de dios. And because of this, we enjoy fellowship and communion with him. We enjoy fellowship with one another. And we enjoy praising and worshiping him together as one in Christ. Podermos, disfruiter de a la vardi, a dorad l'ol juntos, comon, and criston. This is the blessed life. [SPEAKING SPANISH] This is all of grace. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And it's all because of what Jesus has done for us. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Praise be a God for his glorious grace. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Let's pray. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Heavenly Father. [SPEAKING SPANISH] We just thank you and praise you for your glorious grace. [SPEAKING SPANISH]
Your undeserved favor towards sinners like us who deserve your wrath. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Thank you for working in our hearts. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Thank you for bringing us out of darkness and into marvelous life. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And we may know you and enjoy you and worship you. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Gaze upon your beauty. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Or please continue to work in our hearts. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Make us more like you, Jesus. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Cause our hearts to love you more. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Or may we grow in love for you and one another. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Would you cultivate this heart for us, Lord? [SPEAKING SPANISH] That we would share the heart of this psalmist. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And we went along for you, Lord. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And longed to gather together to worship you. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Because you and you alone are infinitely worthy of all of our praise and worship.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] We love you, Lord, and it's in your holy and precious name. [SPEAKING SPANISH] [SPEAKING SPANISH] Amen. (soft music)
