Beyond the Music
In his message "Beyond the Music," Pastor Scott Thomas shares that we are created to worship God, which is our primary purpose in life. He explains that worship extends far beyond just music—it encompasses our entire lives, including our home, work, and church. Pastor Scott emphasizes that when we recognize all aspects of our lives as opportunities for worship through intention, attention, and devotion, we find true fulfillment because we are wired to worship God as our life-giving source of purpose.
Hello, hello friend. Thank you so much for tuning in with us here at Free Life Chapel where we help you discover and live the free life in Christ. My name is Kati and I'm so glad that you decided to tune in with us. Hey, if you ever get a chance to come to the Central Florida area, come visit us. We would love to connect with you face to face. But until then, visit our website freelifechapel.org to find out more about what's happening at your church. Today there's a phenomenal message in store just for you. I hope you're encouraged. I want to talk to you today about something I would call just quite simply beyond the music. Beyond the music. In short, here's the message. Here's what I want you to know. You are wired to worship. You have no option. You have no way to opt out. It's all you will do for the rest of your life is worship. And I want to show you what the Bible has to say about all that. Anybody familiar with Shaq? Shaquille O'Neal. Y'all know who I'm talking about? Lakers. That big wall that ran up and down the... Right? Seven foot one, 325 pounds. You know, when he stopped basketball, he could have just become a warehouse wall somewhere. He could have just stood there like this big piece of meat, y'all. Do you understand? He's a big guy, Shaq. He dominated all that. I love him as a commentator. Hilarious. But Shaq was a big guy. Seven foot one. His wingspan, tip to tip of finger, is seven feet seven inches. Just tip to tip. That's a big boy.
In fact, I saw a picture of him holding a basketball. It looked like he was holding a Skittle. Like, it's just like, oh, bless his heart. Like, he's that guy. Have you all ever heard of a girl named Simone Biles? Simone Biles, y'all know who I'm talking about? Yeah. Four foot nothing? Okay, four foot eight. Let's give her all eight inches matter. Four foot eight inches. And y'all know about Simone, right? She's bringing home all those Olympic medals. All the gymnastics, y'all. Eleven gymnastic medals. This girl was a balance beam, bars, floor exercise. She did it all. The vault. I saw her do a move when she got on the balance beam, that little four-inch piece of wood. She's up there. She goes running, and she does this flip, and she's like head over heels, lands on two feet. I'm like, I tried to sit down. I missed the chair that I was trying to sit down in last week, and this girl is landing on like four inches of wood. She was like, she's boss. Four foot eight, gymnastics, dominated. Shaq, seven foot one, basketball, dominated. They're built for what they did.
Can you imagine if Shaq tried the balance beam? He would break the balance beam. But can you imagine him trying to land? No, are you kidding me? Can you imagine Simone? It ain't happening, y'all. Why, why, why? Because they are built to do what they do, and for them to try to change to something else, for them to swap spots would be a waste of time. It would be total failure for both of them because what they did is they submitted to, this is who I am. I'm going to be who I was built to be. I want you to understand you're not meant to do everything, but there is one thing you are wired to do, and that's worship. And if you try anything other than worshiping the one true God and creator, it will take you sideways and it will be as frustrating as watching Shaq do a floor exercise. It will not be impressive. I want to draw all of us back to the original intent that God had for you and show you what that looks like. And you're going to find out you're doing better than you think you are. I got good news today. Isaiah chapter 43, verse seven. If you're looking for a new tattoo, this is a good one right here.
Isaiah 43, seven. Here's what it says. Here's what it says. They are my people. Read this. I created each of them to bring honor to me. I created them to do what? To bring. They were created. The whole reason of their existence is to bring honor. In other words, if they're not bringing honor to me, they're missing their purpose of existing. It's out of order. If anything that's in disorder is chaos. Have you ever put your money in a vending machine and it did not give you anything back? That's considered out of order. You can bang on it. You can kick on it. It ain't going to kick nothing out. It's out of order. It only takes and it doesn't give. You and I can't live our lives only taking from God and never giving. returning back. You and I were created in order to honor God. That's the purpose of your life. Before you got here, you came pre-wired for this. You don't get to decide this. Everybody is wired a worshiper. You and I then have the responsibility of making sure that our life is focused towards honoring and worshiping God in all that we do. And I want to talk to you about that today. Because the only purpose that will fulfill your life is when we're serving,
honoring, and worshiping God with our life. You see, this goes beyond just the 18 minutes of worship we just had on this platform today. This is good and this is healthy. This is great. But ladies and gentlemen, you can't worship 18 minutes a week and feel like that you've satisfied what you need to do in honoring, worshiping God. How many of you know that you can't have, you can't have a marriage built on 18 minutes a week? No, I promise you it don't work that way. It just, it just does not. Yeah, okay, let's increase it. An hour and 10 minutes. I went to church an hour and 10 minutes. But ladies and gentlemen, God's presence an hour and 10 minutes a week is not going to help you get you through the rest of it. You can't build a relationship with God solely on that. There's got to be something more on the other side. And this is why you and I were built to worship. Because when you understand what worshiping is all about, you realize it busts the doors down to Sundays and it rushes all up into the full week. And I want to show you how that plays out. Worship literally means worth-ship. It's made up of these two words that go together. Worth-ship. In other words, to value or to regard with extreme respect and honor and devotion. In other words, worship is what you and I give back to God. This is what you give. That's why this is called a, watch this, a worship service. It's our service. We're meeting the needs. We're, we're honoring. We're giving back what is rightly due His name. The reason for my existence. I'm serving Him. That's what the worship service is all about. Colossians chapter 1 verse 16 tells us this. All things have been created by Him and for Him. Would you say that? By Him and for Him. Say it again. By Him and for Him. That ain't FUBU, for us, by us. That ain't what He said. Y'all know, yeah, anybody know what FUBU is? How many of you do not have a clue what FUBU is? You don't have a clue? That's okay. All right. Yeah, some of you. Hey, FUBU is a name brand. It's a name brand from back in the day. It mean, and it was mean for us, by us. And it was that, that kind of street wear. How many of y'all remember Rock-A-Wear? Any Rock-A-Wear people? Oh, we got Rock-A-Wear people here. Are you ready? Members only. Where's the members only people? You got the members only jacket at the house? It's old, falling apart. All right. I'm, I'm not mad
at you. South Pole? Any South Pole people? Some of y'all got it on right now. I'm not mad at you. You ready? We're going to take a deep dive. Watch this. Watch this. Watch the hands that go up here. You ready? Jordash. Jordash jeans. Where's the Jordash? Hey, there we go. Sasson. Sasson. Okay. A few of you here and there. Okay. Bugle Boy. Any Bugle Boy people in the place? All I wear is Armani. Well, good for you. When I was growing up, we couldn't afford nothing, so my mom made my clothes, so I wore my mommy. So you got your Armani. I got, like, that's just how we roll. That's what we did. Whatever you want. It's, watch, watch. This is, we're made for His glory. By Him. For Him. That, that's, that's the whole reason we exist. And notice something. The writer in the book of Colossians here, this guy's name is Paul. Paul, when he writes this, he uses a word intentionally in the New Testament to throw us all the way back to Genesis chapter 1. Like, one word, and shoo, and he throws us all the way back to the beginning of the book. Created. You were created. That word is intentionally used to take us right back to, in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And immediately we begin to be reminded of everything that God put in motion. He made the trees. The sun is doing only what it was intended to do. Nothing else. The moon only does what it was created to do. Nothing else. A fish never climbs a tree. A bird never goes for a swim. You put those fish, you put the bird in the wrong element, they die. You put them in the right atmosphere, they come alive. The genius comes out in them. Here's what I'm trying to tell you. You don't operate good everywhere. You only operate good in the right atmosphere. You were built for something not everything. That's why you don't belong everywhere That's why your mind doesn't run the same everywhere You got to make sure that the atmosphere around you the people the voices in your life Hey that the people around you are the are creating an atmosphere where the genius in you that God factor and you can come alive That's exactly why we're here. It's on purpose So the writers using this language to take us back into creation because he also then reminds us of this guy named Adam and Eve The first couple that come on the scene and and and where does God put him in this place called the Garden of Eden? What what makes the garden all of that? It was the presence of God. It was perfection. It was perfection. No sweating allowed
It was beautiful It was be reese cups branches little little shrubs of reese cups growing everywhere like like it the whole place was laid out It served and it met the needs of men and here's the deal The Bible says that God walked with them talked with them fellowship with him. Can you imagine what can you imagine tomorrow morning? You and God seven o'clock Lake Collingsworth. Let's take a walk this is where they're walking and talking with God and They're sharing their heart and God is speaking direction and wisdom back to them. For example, leave that tree alone Eat from all those but leave that one alone. He's giving them direction for life The husband and wife the two shall become one make sure the marriage is one he's giving them direction for life Multiply Genesis chapter 1 multiply take control of life dominate succeed These are the instructions of God To his people in that realm where they're doing life Together not not an hour in ten minutes a week life But there's one verse That's hidden inside of one chapter in Genesis chapter 2 verse 15 that will re-script your view of worship if you see what it says watch this Genesis 2 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden To work it and take care of it read those words have been ready To work it and take care of it read those words have been ready 1 2 3 to work it and take care of it The word work is an interesting word in the original language In the Hebrew the original language that word of work is a bod a voda made up off of a root word a bod But but here's what it means. It's used almost 300 times in the Bible and In those 300 times in the Old Testament watch this that word for work the exact same word is also translated worship multiple times in the Bible in other words Where you see that word for work? There is just as much credibility behind it being translated as worship as it is work Research it for yourself. Google that thing. You'll see what I'm talking about. This is the reality for us So watch this so you could read this verse
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to worship and take care of it This is powerful because the very first time worship is mentioned in the Bible is right here and That word worship is also connected to man's work and God's presence In other words, they're not different things Work is worship. Worship is work Like like God combined all of it There's there's you don't have to separate it like there's Sunday for Jesus and then Monday through Saturday for oh my god Get me through That's not the goal. It's it's not sacred time and secular time we can't Compartmentalize God and try to put him in a box and try to just fit him in when I want and when I don't I Can't turn him on and turn him off in my life That means all of your life is sacred. You don't have secular time when you said yes to Jesus Everything you are became holy Everything you are God said you and me we doing life together when you go to work. I'm going to work you go on vacation I'm with you boy. Let's go. You're gonna stop and get a burger. I'm gonna hang with you Whatever that looks like we're doing some life together. You're taking care of them babies mama two o'clock in the morning They scream screaming and crying. Guess what? I'm getting up with you. We're doing this together. It's all Of life. I'm not trying to develop a healthy relationships off of an hour and ten minutes a week I want to do all of life with you. God's a big boy He can handle whatever you step into whatever you experience. He's not afraid of it He's the one that makes life have meaning and purpose and bite and Joy, that's why we gotta take Him with us and do life together. So we work, at the same time we worship. And we worship while we're working. There's no separation. In Judaism, there is a, the number one major idea in all of Judaism is the very thing
I've got tattered on my arm. It's tekun olam. It means to repair the world. This was the biggest idea in Jesus' mind. Repair it from what? When Adam and Eve sinned and broke, fractured the world. Broke and fractured union and unity and that oneness with God. We work in life to repair and put it back together again. This is what we're doing as we are living out our faith and we're worshiping through our day, worshiping through our week. We've gotta begin to see it that we are in the process of healing and bringing the name of Jesus to a culture and to a people group that might not hear, see, or experience. They're not here on Sunday, but if they've encountered you, they've encountered the same Jesus in you that we encounter on Sunday. He's there. He's on living color. And we're gonna watch him change lives. This is what we do. This is how we roll. But guess what? Here's what happens. Adam and Eve blew it. They rebelled. They were evicted from the garden.
And when Adam and Eve left the garden, guess who else left? God. God said, if you're not gonna be here, I don't wanna be here. I'm here because of you. I want to know you. I want a relationship with you. It's you and me. That's what makes Eden attractive to God, not the pristine setup. God says, I can have that anywhere. I wanna be with you. So if you're leaving, I am too. And he did. And we've got 4,000 years. Watch this. From the time Adam and Eve blew it, moving forward 4,000 years later, then something happens. God sent his son. Watch, watch. 1 Corinthians 15 calls Jesus the second Adam. There was a first Adam that blew it, broke it down with God. Jesus, the second Adam, he shows up on the scene. And by the way, what was the purpose of the second Adam? Well, the Bible tells us in Luke chapter 19, to restore that which was lost. Not those.
The word in the Greek is that. In other words, it's not just people, but everything that was promised in the garden, God wants to bring all of that back again. So the union that was broke down, the joy, the success, the peace, the rest, the strength. God says, in my presence, all of that was available to Adam and Eve. And when they sinned, they rebelled, and they had to leave, they went through some rough stuff. Jesus came to restore and put new life back to all that so you and I could live that. So the second Adam shows up to restore what was lost in the garden. And the Bible says that Jesus is called Emmanuel, which means God with us. Just like we're back in the garden, walking with God again, here we are, he's trying to restore all this. This is the work of Jesus. And then Jesus comes to turn our hearts, our lives into a garden, because the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 3.16, read this with me. Surely you know that you are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you. In other words, no longer do you have to go to a place to experience God called Eden, I'm putting Eden in your heart, and God's living here,
and you and God are lined up, you guys are together. There's a relationship again. Jesus, because of his sacrifice that he did for us, he paved the way, he brought it back, he healed the divide so that we could be back in union and in good standing with God, to know him and not just know him afar off. He's not just this cosmic deity that rules and reigns outside and is oblivious to who we are. No, he knows us. He sent his son Jesus, God with us, who went through what we go through to connect with us, and now he turns us into a temple, his place of living, his sanctuary. That's who you are, that's who I am. God lives inside of you. He walks with you, he talks with you, he leads your life, we talk about living a spirit-led life. That's how this comes about. It's the place where you and God are doing life together. That sounds like Eden to me. I wouldn't wanna do life without him. I don't wanna try a Monday without him. Why would I leave him in Sunday? We gotta break Jesus out of Sunday. Someone got him locked up. We gotta get Jesus out of Sunday, get him into Tuesday, get him into Wednesday, get him in, like take him with you wherever you,
some of y'all work in some crazy places. You better take Jesus with you. That's all I got to say. So how do we live in some daily worship? How do we do this day in and day out? It's not just what we do. The truth is, the way we do it is how we do it. How I live my day, not just what I do during the day, but how I do it, and I want to explain that, is what turns that into a place of worship. You see, some of us are in the right place, we just have the wrong approach. We don't understand how God sees this moment and where I am and how He can get glorified for it. Again, some of us are working in some tore-up places, and we're thinking, Jesus, get me out of here. Back in the day, I don't know if you've been in church for a while, I'm way over-churched. I'm more churchy than Noah was archy, you understand, I've done this a long time. But back in the day, the mindset was this, if you did not work full-time in the church, your job was secular. It wasn't holy. So if you worked in the church, you had this special place with God, and God heard your prayers, doesn't hear our prayers, and we're just down here, and they're up there, and all that twisted, messed up, jacked up religious mindset, that was all there. And I want you to understand, there's nothing biblical about any of that. Do you know that the very first time we see in the Bible the Spirit of God coming on somebody is in Exodus 31, and it was on a 13-year-old boy who God anointed in order to build the tabernacle? God's first, the first mention of God's Spirit coming on anybody was a construction worker. That's who I will use for my glory. What I'm trying to tell you is we're trying to limit and put God in a box, and God is saying, I want this relationship with everybody.
No one owns the market on me, and there's no high or no little. We're all, and whatever you do, I'm gonna get glory out of your life if you'll just start seeing it in the proper way. So how do we do it? Three ways in order to begin to change how we approach it. Number one, you gotta give God your intention. Intention. That means my heart is involved. It's not mindless. My heart is to know God. My heart is to love God. My heart is to please God. My heart is to bring God joy in my life. It's the goal of my life. The intention of my heart is there. And then once your intention is focused towards Him, then you move to your attention. And now I need to give Him attention. Intention is my heart. Attention is my thoughts. Now my thoughts are leaning towards Him. I'm trying to be more God-conscious. I want to be aware that He's here. I want to be aware that this time matters. I want to be aware that He sees me. That riding down the road in my car, at work, making bottles, mowing grass, flipping a burger, wherever I am, God sees me. I'm aware that He's here. We need more God-consciousness in our life. And after you have your intention in place, because it's your heart, and your attention in place, because it's your time and your thoughts, now you can have your devotion going
in the right direction. And that's your actions towards God. It's when you're trying. Ladies and gentlemen, don't lose your try. Well, I tried and it didn't work. Well, try again. You ever been eating your food and bit your tongue? You didn't quit eating, did you? It's too dangerous. Oh, stop it. Of course, you keep on going. We keep going. You fell down, you get up and keep going. Try it again. The goal is to move one step toward closer to Jesus today. I can't take all of them. I'm not going to shock Him like, He's amazing. Heaven's never going to say that about me. He's amazing. He's never going to be sad about me. But I do want Heaven to say, He keeps coming back. He keeps trying again. He keeps waking up and taking another step. Here He comes again, oh my Lord. That's what I want to be said of me. And that's the goal, and that's what God's Word is telling us. And if you want to know what devotion to God looks like, if you want to know what action and trying looks like, that's what the book of Proverbs was written for. Proverbs is full of nothing but devotion. Number one, how to lead yourself and how to pursue God in your own private life.
And number two, how to deal with and handle others. How do you know people can get on your nerves? Do not look at your neighbor, do not look at your neighbor, look this way. People can get on your nerves, man. And God's Word is showing us, it's going to hit. But if you'll do it my way, I'll read it as worship. You handle a bad situation in the right way, that was worship right there, because you kept your heart focused towards me. That means I can get glory from you at work, I can get glory from you on vacation, I can get glory from you in a tore-up, nasty, at your house, in your relationships, while you're taking an exam, I can get glory in all of it. This is what His Word is telling us. You see, God designed. This garden to be three things for Adam and Eve and this is what the scriptures are taking you and I back to listen We're right back to the beginning again What has been will be? This is Bible watch this three things that Eden was it was home It was work and it was worship for Adam and Eve All three of those took place in the Garden of Eden It was where they lived it's where they worked It's where they worshipped those three things you and I need to change our mind about our world and realize that God's presence is involved in your home in your work and In your worship in your sanctuary in your church those three That is in Relationships are involved in all that but those three encompass the three big pictures of your life If we're going to move towards him and we begin to worship him and all that so watch this number one home Some y'all need to take Jesus home with you
Come on somebody Let's get some laughter in the house. I mean, oh Jesus laughs Yes, get some get some Jesus in the house Get some joy in the house Hey, let's get some wisdom in the house Let's get some peace let's get some healing of hearts in the house. Let's take Jesus. Why would you leave him here? Take Jesus home with you. Let Jesus help you raise those kids Let Jesus figure out financial strategies He wants to help you there and I'm just telling you right now all that housework You got going on heaven is proud heaven smiles heaven reads it as worship. You're cutting the grass You're making baby bottles. You're putting the kid down at night because it's time to go to bed. Whatever you fold in laundry It's all worship because when my heart is postured to honor him all that I am brings him glory There's no secular and sacred. It's all beautiful in his sight You need to get off your back and stop seeing that I'm not pleasing him now I need to get back to church. So he'll love me baby. He's loving you right now. Yes, he is He sees what you're doing Well, how is it Scott that God gets glory out of that because there's nothing holy about mowing grass and there's nothing holy about washing dishes Well, let me help you with something who gave you the talent the energy the breath the ability the cognitive capacity To even know how to go about doing these things, you know, it's all on loan from heaven that's why I'm telling you whenever you use his capacity to move life forward to celebrate the Principles of his word to encourage somebody else to create laughter Become a peacemaker around those that you're doing life with when you're there encouraging and lifting when you're bringing order to chaos Cleaning putting things together. It all is glorifying to God and God says that's my girl right there. I see you That's my boy right there You need to begin to see it through God's eyes and realize you've been worshiping all along and never even realized it Oh, this is worship, too. Sure it is But it's only one aspect of our worship. I'll get there in a minute. Y'all are getting ahead of me So turn your home into a place of worship number two work in school work in school
Yes, take Jesus to work and please take Jesus to school on exam days. Please take him there now. Let me help you He ain't gonna give you answers. You didn't study for I'm just gonna tell you right now. Jesus does not cheat But if you're leading a business or you're running an apartment do it with integrity Do it honor do it joy Do it the best of your ability do it with humility and watch God be honored in that place He's being worshiped when you do it that way Don't don't discount that but when you're studying for exam or you're starting a business if you're cutting hair If you're if you're if you're a plumber and you're putting in a pipe somewhere do it for the glory pull your pants up But do it for the glory of God and make sure that you're honoring him if you're living single If you're married if you're parenting, yeah, wherever you are, whatever you're doing When I'm working, I'm glorifying God with my life You need to see heaven sees it that way You can push back all you want to but you're never going to change God's mind If you and I will flip our mind and realize today I live to glorify him and to honor him He's getting pleasure out of all of it He's not waiting on Sunday so you can come back and finally get things, right? No, baby It's Wednesday morning and he's so happy and so pleased with you because you're back at work again And you got those kids to soccer practice and you made them laugh like crazy And yes, you cut that sandwich 19 different ways So they would eat it when they got to school But you did it and you honored God and God honors back. Ladies and gentlemen, it matters on every turn and number three church Worship, bring Jesus to church with you. Do not assume we have enough extra supplies to give out when you come. I need you to bring your supply with you. As believers, you should bring Jesus with you. Bring some joy with you when you come in here. Do you realize that your attendance is ministry? When you walk into the place,
people are encouraged to see you again. Anybody ever play sports growing up? Okay, if you didn't, take my word for it. When you're playing another team, there was nothing better than having home court advantage. When I was playing baseball, playing football, as long as we were home and we had our fans and our cheerleaders and our stadium and I saw our logo and our mascot, man, there wasn't nothing like that because we could be down, we could be struggling, and then you got the people and the chance. Here we go, Bobcats, here we go. Here we go, Bobcats, here we go. They had to do that a lot because we were terrible, but anyway, they're cheering like crazy. Watch this, they're cheering like crazy and in the middle of all this cheer and you're in a slump and you're feeling bad and like, man, this isn't looking good. Like, I don't know, but you hear them and there's something about what they're doing, like, mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm, you start walking different. You're kind of excited about it and it begins to put some pep in and you push a little harder. They brought something out of me because I was at the home court advantage. Here's what I'm telling you. When you come to church on Sunday mornings,
you're in the home court advantage, baby, and I don't know what your week was like before you got here and you could be feeling down, like you blew it and it was bad, but man, get in here and hear some people worshiping God, hear the music hit, begin to celebrate, get your laughter back again, and let the home court pick you back up and get you focused again. That's why we need a place of worship. We need to come together as believers. I need you, you need me, we need each other. That's why we meet together this way. You're wired for this, but we prioritize Sundays. We prioritize the blend. Our kids need to be in the blend on Wednesdays. I would not wanna be a teenager in 2025. Are you kidding me? They need to hear the message that's preached on a level that they can get it and find kids around and friends around that are going after Jesus and serious about it. We need to give that community and that opportunity. That's what we do. Your kids need kids church. Yes, they've been with you all week long. We need Jesus to touch them. The singing, the praying, taking notes in church, that's worship. It's beautiful.
God, your word and your truth is so special. I will write it down. I honor you with these notes. I want to apply it to my heart. I wanna serve you and put a smile on your face. Serving, inviting people to church. It's holy. It's worship. It's what we do. Last year, last November, Cindy and I, we were both ministering. We were both preaching in Switzerland in November last year. And while we were there, we decided to take a few extra days, like while you're on the other side of the water, go look at some stuff, right? And so we'd never been to Italy. So we thought, let's go to Italy. And so we went over there and we're running around. We hit some really cool places. We finished up our trip in a place called Milan. Now Milan is where, it gave bougie the definition. All right, you understand? Like, yeah, all that. Milan, it's every brand you can imagine and then stuff you can't imagine. They had names of places I never heard before in my entire life. And I'm sorry, I just can't spend $3,500 on a T-shirt.
I just can't do that stuff. But whoop, there it is. It was everywhere. Cindy, as soon as we get inside the corporate limits of Milan, I see Cindy, kind of her head a little perked up, I'm like, oh no, oh no. And I start shouting, Target, Ross, Marshall, Target, Ross, Marshall, bring her back. While we were in Milan, while we were in Milan, we had a tour guide that we want to see as much as we can of the city. And one of the places our tour guide took us was right here. It was called the Cathedral of Milan. No, and that doesn't even do it justice, folks. You gotta go. Y'all wanna go next week? We can get it, we'll just go get a bus and we'll just go. Cathedral of Milan, it took 600 years to build this place. They just finished it in 1965. Inside, I can't even tell you, it is breathtaking. They have stained glass throughout the entire place and it's telling the biblical story, everything, Old Testament, New Testament. It is unreal what's inside the place. But what else is really, you see those spires, you see all those big points sticking up on top? That was something really different.
There's another view. This view is from on top of the cathedral. I said, I gotta see it better, and so I climbed up one of the poles. No, I didn't. They actually, the tour guide took us, they're giving us a tour, and so we went on top, and we're viewing, don't miss this, we're viewing this from on top. On the cathedral, there's 135 of those spires that are hundreds of feet in the air. They started building this in the 1300s, and I'm pretty sure that their safety was not as good as it is today, you understand. So they're dangling off of scaffolding up there, building, carving, they have artisans that are chipping and carving this away by hand with stone that they're putting up there. Watch this. And out of those 135 spires, there's over 3,400 statues that are carved inside the spires. Inside, and that, okay, that's, yeah, that kinda looks cool, but can we go back to the other picture real quick, please? Thank you so much, you guys are doing so good. So you see where it looks like a square, like it's a box in the spire? Inside of that, on all four sides,
there is a full head-to-toe man or woman inside there. Their hair, it has details in the hair. The eyes, the nose, the mouth, like the detail carved inside, not placed inside, carved inside that has then the columns on the outside, and there's four on each of those. They're all over the place. And you had to be on top of the cathedral to even see that. Scott, what are you so passionate about? I'm gonna tell you, hold on. This cathedral was not made to go on top of. We just started touring on top just a little while back. All of that artwork was done with never, there ever being an intention of a human eye being put on it. It was not done for beauty, for us, for no one to be impressed to see it. No one, can you imagine working years and nobody seeing your work? Nobody. Well, why did they do it? It was so high and so out of human sight, they built it for the eyes of one. We built it for the worship and the glory of God. God will see it. And since this is his house, we will do all we can to make it as majestic. We will pour our heart and soul and give the absolute best we have in honoring him.
How many of you would believe that all of that work, God saw it as worship? Yes, sir. All these artisans giving decades of their life to carving statues that no one would, they never knew anybody would see them, but they did it to worship God. Ladies and gentlemen, that's a picture of your life and my life. We do it all for the audience of one. If other people enjoy it, awesome, great. So glad to hear it. If you don't, wasn't for you. I did it for his glory. When we live our lives out loud and we love people and encourage them, that's what we do. Colossians chapter three, verse 17 says this. Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus giving thanks through him to God the Father. Whatever you do or say, you're repping Jesus. Don't miss that. Whatever you do or say, you're repping him. Do it for his glory. So when you go to work, go to work for his glory. When you're typing on that computer board, do it for his glory. If you're making a pizza, make me one
and do it for his glory. Like do it to honor God. You're driving a truck, drive for his glory. Smile big, God, I'll honor you and represent you the best I can everywhere I go. You're gonna go shopping, shop for his glory. Amen, amen, amen, amen. There's three things about worship, I'm done with this, this is gonna be fast. Number one, you're wired to worship. We've mentioned this, you're wired to worship. If you're not worshiping God, you're worshiping something or someone. Make sure you get it right. Why? Because number two, your entire life is worship. You don't have the ability to opt out. Everything you do, every breathing minute of your day, you're worshiping him. Whatever's going on, we need to change our mind, we need to recognize he's here right now and he's smiling on my life. Let me live my life as a representation of him in wherever I am, whatever I'm doing. And number three, you will either be gutted by or fulfilled by the object of your worship. In other words, you can worship a hobby, you can worship a career, you can worship an artist. There's a lot of things that we can worship because our culture is throwing idols at us
day in and day out. And if the culture doesn't throw them, we'll create them. But you better make sure that that thing that you're throwing all your time, attention, effort, finances, pouring yourself into, make sure it has the ability to give you peace at night when you lay your head on a pillow. Make sure it can walk you through a deep, dark time of your life. Make sure, make sure it can give you joy and hope and strength when everybody walks out, he steps in large and in charge and can bless you and lead you not in this life, but in the life to come. You see, everything doesn't fulfill you. Even success doesn't fulfill you. There are people who are successful, but they're so unfulfilled. Do you know that a study was done on millennials? A recent study, and here's what they found out. 85% of millennials hate their job. They hate what they do. And here's, as the study continued, here's what they came and found out. Burnout, getting tired, run down, wanting to throw your hands up and quit has nothing to do with working too much. It has everything to do with working much without any purpose to it. When you're doing purposeless work, it will gut you. You don't have enough energy to do that kind of work.
You better find purpose in what you do. And what gives me purpose is knowing that he's watching. And what gives me purpose is knowing that he's smiling on my life, and he's taking joy and pleasure in this. So for him, and to know that he smiles on that, I'm good. So when we walk into a job that I used to feel like was a dead end and so frustrating, but I walk in with a different mindset, a different heart, I've got my intention, my attention, and my devotion all connected to all of it, and it brings me alive. I'm bringing joy in the middle of a dark situation. Now you know your purpose for being in that job. Now the place is coming alive, and people are coming after you because there's something in you that's just different. Oh, I didn't get the pay raise, and I didn't get the promotion that I wanted, but man, I'm so fulfilled because I know God is pleased in my life, and I do this for him and his glory. God will bring the increase when you worship him. God has never had a problem promoting people who are focused on him because he gets the glory out of that as well. But ladies and gentlemen, we gotta change our mind and realize God is smiling on your life today, and he's gonna smile on your life on Monday, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. He's smiling and pleased with your life,
but change your mind and realize I do this out of worship for him. Would you please stand to your feet, stand to your feet? You're not wasting your time. Honor him, honor him with it. Father, thank you for loving us right where we are. Thank you for working in and through us, and on the days that we fail to see you properly and who we are to you and who you are to us. God, we repent for that, and I pray that you would help change our heart, mind, and perspective, and realize that we have your attention, we have your joy, we have your smile, we have your focus. So we work this week for the audience of one. So tomorrow and Tuesday and Wednesday, it's all for your glory, for your eyes only. That's why we do it. Be pleased by it, be honored by it. Help me to bring your joy, your spirit, your peace, your strength into every arena that I step in so that I'm representing you. I'm doing it all for your glory and for your pleasure. God, bless my friends in this room and help us to change our mind and realize there's no such thing as secular time. It's all holy in your sight. So we give you all that we are and ask you to be blessed by it. In Jesus' name we pray, amen, amen, amen.
