And today is also important day because we are closing out this series we've been in the last few weeks called The Benefit of Doubt. This content comes from a great pastor, Pastor Craig Groeschel, and we wanted to share this stuff with you. And if you would like this to continue on, because I've heard great feedback about this series from so many people, and if you say, I want to continue to dig into my doubts, because a lot of people I don't think you feel the freedom to doubt or to question or to take those things to God, well then get this book, read through it, and continue the journey of growing through your questions and taking those things to God. But today, as we close out this series that we've been in the last few weeks, we're going to talk about maybe the most difficult thing we doubt about God the most, which is does God love us? We doubt God's love. I think a lot of people feel like God couldn't or wouldn't love you for what you've done or for what has been done to you. Maybe you feel defiled or something just happened that you can no longer be worthy of love. And I just want you to know, I'm not making this up, I constantly to this day struggle with feeling like God could love me. And if you say, Luke, that's crazy, you're a pastor. Well, the only thing I could say is, I am not any closer to God than any of the rest of you, but if you're just like, Luke, that's crazy or being humble or whatever, okay, let's just say I am closer. If you get real close to God, wouldn't it make sense that the closer you get, the more you realize you have no business being there? So I just really, the more I learn about God, the more I'm like, man, I am nothing like you. I am sinful and broken and prideful and in all these different things, and you're not like that. So I may not externally share that with you guys, but internally I'm very critical and I can constantly feel like, man, I don't know that I'm worthy of God's love.
I think if you and I, if we have some similarities here, there might be a distorted belief that we're trying to work through. Craig Groeschel gives two of them. The beliefs are false, but that I'm too insignificant for God to love me. I'm not special. There's nothing of value about me. You look in the mirror and don't feel good about yourself or whatever it might be. The other false belief might be I'm too sinful. Now when it comes to God's love, when it comes to significance and sin and all those things, there might be two types of love that we need to pay attention to that will help us understand when it comes to thinking I'm insignificant or I'm too sinful. Well, we might not be thinking about God's love correctly. There's a type of love. It's a legitimate, real kind of love. It's a love that values something for its value. You love something for its value. You love going on vacation because it's amazing and they treat you like kings and queens at the resort and it's super valuable, like that's a valuable experience. You love the quarterback on your team because they get paid a lot of money. They're very valuable, right? You want them to succeed. You love that thing. You love your spouse, not just because of who they are, but because of what they bring to the relationship. They're handsome. They're pretty. They are resourceful, productive, whatever it might be. There's value in that relationship. My boys right now want to buy sports cards every time we go to Target. They get so excited.
It's a craze right now because they're hoping to pull a card from the pack that is valuable. There's this love that we have that is associated with value in the things that we love and that's legit. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's another kind of love. It's a love that gives value to the object or the person or the thing or the situation that you love. You give value to it and it could be something that has no value in itself, but you give it value. Something like a fingernail, eww, fingernails. You clip them. They fall on the ground. If you find them, it's disgusting. You're wondering what's stuck up under there. They smell. They're weird. fingernails. I'm making you uncomfortable thinking about them right now. Now you're thinking about scratching fingernails. Oh, that's awful. Hey, fingernails. Except did you know that Lady Gaga's fingernail in 2013 auctioned off for $12,000? Why? Because it's Lady Gaga's fingernail. That's right. It's an invaluable object made valuable because of who it belonged to. You see what I'm saying? You ever feel like a crusty old fingernail? Well you're God's crusty old fingernail. A while back I was talking about stuffed animals with my kids. They have their stuffed animals that they love. Like they are bonded with these stuffed animals. My son Ellis just got a teddy bear that is his size. He loves it so much. He sits with the teddy bear, all those things. He is bonding to the teddy bear. Did any of you have a teddy bear or a stuffed animal or something like that? Maybe you had a weird animal like me. Mine was a gorilla. I had a stuffed gorilla as a kid. And this is not my stuffed gorilla, but I can't find mine anymore. But this is a picture of what mine looked like that I found on the internet. When we started talking about this with my kids and they were like, Daddy, did you have a stuffed animal growing up? I was like, I did. And I was flooded with all these memories. I love this thing. I want it so bad, but I
don't know if it's still around. Like I don't think it's at my parents' house anymore, but I feel so bonded with it. I can remember messing with his eyebrows. You see that thing? It was great to grab and flip. Is this weird for y'all? But I remember it. I loved it and I can feel it. I remember the bond that is there. And if I ever found him, I don't know if he's still at my parents' house in a corner or a table or in a bedroom or up on a shelf. I don't know. But if I ever found him, I would be so excited that I found my childhood stuffed gorilla. Not because there's any value. It's worthless. You couldn't give this thing away. God has value to me because he was mine. You see what I'm saying? So who cares if you're beat up or torn or ripped or well loved? If you feel like a beat up old stuffed animal, you're God's beat up old stuffed animal. And that is the kind of love that I want to talk about today. It's a love where God bestows value upon you and says, you have value because you are mine. Romans chapter five, verses six through eight, Paul says at just the right time when we were still powerless, you didn't have virtue to earn salvation. You weren't worthy of it. You were still powerless. That's when Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person, unrighteous person, before a good person, someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this while we were still sinners. That's when Christ died for us. While you were still without value in and of yourself, God said, you're mine. And he gave you value. So you may not feel valuable, but God set the price tag over your life by giving up what was most valuable to him, his son, Jesus. So you may feel insignificant. You may feel like a failure, but all that matters is that you're his. And that's how you know you do have significance. You do have value. You are loved. So the first distorted belief that we might have is that I'm too insignificant. Another distorted belief might be I'm too sinful. Yes, we are sinful. Yes. But are you too sinful for God to love you? Listen, I've felt it. I know what you are feeling. And you might say, Luke, well, you've never done what I've done. Okay, I hear you. But we all know what it's like to feel like I am too far gone. If you don't think everybody in this room feels that way, you are lying to yourself and you're pretending that you're the exception. And you're not. We have all felt I'm too sinful. I'm too far gone. I cannot be loved. But God's love, again, bestows value. Look at what Peter said. Love covers a multitude of sins. It's a love that covers. It makes
up for. It says, hey, you're good. I got it. I'm going to take care of it. That's what love is. If you've ever gone out to eat with a friend or something like that, you've gone to lunch, you've gone to dinner, and the bill comes and you reach for your wallet. You ever done that? Oh, no. I don't have it. And your friend's like, sure. But if they're a good friend, they'll say, Oh man, don't worry about it, I got you, I'll cover it. Got you, no worries. That's the kind of friend God is, where he says, you have a debt you can't pay, a sin that you can't pay. And God literally said, it's okay, I'm gonna cover it for you, I will take care of it. I'll pay for it, you don't have to pay me back. I will cover it for you. This is why Jesus came, was to cover our sin. Say, I know you can't pay the debt, I'm gonna take care of it for you. Look at what it says in 1 John 4. This is how God showed his love among us. He sent his one and only son into the world that we might live through him. This is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. And that word atoning could be translated or not translated, but it could be related to the word cover. It's like, your sin is taken care of, it's atoned for. It kind of means like, to cover it. Say, I'm gonna take care of it.
I'm gonna pay the price that you can't pay, your sin, I'll cover it. I will take care of it, I will atone it for you. That's what Jesus does for us. Now, these verses are powerful in many ways, but it's also interesting to think about who wrote those words. Who wrote 1 John? Well, a guy named John. John was one of Jesus' disciples. He was probably one of the closest three disciples that Jesus had, which is really interesting because John was one of those disciples that other people looked at and said, Jesus, why are you hanging with these guys? When people looked at Jesus' disciples, they were not impressed. They were like, these are the rabbi school dropouts. These are the people that did not make the cut. Jesus, why have you chosen these fools? Like, what are you doing? In fact, John was probably pretty rough around the edges. Why? Because Jesus gave him and his brother, they were both disciples. He gave them a nickname that I think is pretty great. He gave them one of my favorite nicknames in the entire Bible. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? He called them the sons of thunder.
I wonder if they announced it like that. Next up, the sons of thunder. James and John come in. I mean, these were not gentle, soft guys. These were loud, boisterous, maybe difficult. Maybe they said words that Jesus was like, hey, you're not supposed to say that. I don't know. When they one time went to a village, Jesus and his disciples, the village did not welcome them. James and John, the sons of thunder, turned to Jesus in Luke chapter nine, verse 54. And they say, Lord, would you like us to call down fire from heaven and destroy them? These are not guys that wanted to kill you with kindness. They just wanted to kill you. And so I think Jesus knew he had a little work to do with the sons of thunder. So John was probably a rough guy. And as he got closer to Jesus, I bet it was very apparent that he did not belong there, not only to others, but to himself. And yet, three years later, he is the one standing by Jesus's mother, looking up at Jesus dying on the cross. And Jesus looks at him and says, take care of her. There were moments that began to show John that his value wasn't himself. It was this one who had come to die for him,
who had paved the way and then said, here you go. I want you to carry this on into the future. I wonder if in that moment, John, a little bit more than before said, okay, I get it. I understand God's love a little bit more. Not that I loved him, but that he loved me. My first ministry I've told you about before was a little church north of Cincinnati called Ross Christian Church. And we didn't have much, but we had a gym. So we played basketball. On Tuesday nights, I had open gym and we'd have 20 to 30 guys that would come and play with me. My one stipulation was halfway through, we had to do devotionals together, which I know is a kill joy. Stop playing basketball. Let's sit in a circle and read the Bible. There was one guy that came almost every week and he didn't even pretend. This dude was an atheist, still is today. I don't think he likes Christians, but he was always really cordial. He was always really nice. He didn't disrupt, but I knew he sat there and he was like, I just want to say something because he didn't believe any of this stuff. I know what he believed. He believed things like, you know,
I don't believe in a narrow minded, angry God who at the first sign of sin would send people to hell. I know the God that I read about in the Bible is a God that doesn't want anybody to go to hell. He's a God that loves so much. that he sent his son to save anyone that might humble themselves and say I can't save myself I need a Savior and there the father is with open arms saying thank you for taking this rescue line of love I love you I want you I care about you you are mine and that reminds me of what John the son of thunder said in his letter when he said God is love not the judges that God does love things he's not just one who has the characteristic of love he is love and what's so cool about this is John known as the son of thunder one of the sons of thunder by the time that that was experienced by him in person with Jesus to the time that he wrote this stuff down there were some years in between and I guess in the years in between he had grown in his understanding of God's love for him so that by the time he writes his account of the life of Jesus the gospel of John and by the time that he writes his letters we no longer hear him writing in this tone of a sons of thunder instead five times in his gospel instead of even naming himself he calls himself the disciple whom Jesus loved his identity was always as the one Jesus had loved but he came to understand it and to record it not pridefully but in a way that says you know you know who I am there's nothing special about you know what's special about me Jesus loves me that's it that was the thing he wanted people to know for all time there's anything I want you to know is that Jesus loves me and he loves you and I want you to know that you are the one Jesus loves you don't have to be defined by your failures and your mistakes and the things that you've done wrong or the things that others have done wrong you can be defined the banner over your life can simply be I am the one that Jesus loves in fact I would like you to say that with me even if you don't believe it you need to declare it over your life it needs to have God's truth stated over your life which is that God loves
you would you say I am the one Jesus loves would you say that with me on 3 1 2 3 I am the one Jesus loves you are the one Jesus loves scripture says nothing can separate you from his love in that amazing to hear look at what Paul wrote in Romans chapter 8 starting in verse 35 says who shall separate us from the love of Christ it's a rhetorical question like not nobody shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword as it is written for your sake we face death all day long we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered no in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who what loved us for I am convinced that neither death nor life neither angels nor demons neither the present nor the future nor any powers neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord amen do you believe that you may not feel it but I want you to know it and what I want to do now at the end of this service is I want us to respond to God's love and my prayer is that you would walk out of here not just knowing it not just saying I know Luke said it I know scripture says it my prayer is that today you would walk out of here feeling it so we're gonna create an atmosphere in here and we're gonna do a few things we've still got 20 minutes I know it's so weird you're like Luke finished preaching don't we get to go don't we get out of class early today no we did this a little differently like we're preaching first sort of and then now we want to respond in worship in several different ways and I hope that over the next few minutes my prayer is that something between you and God would break down in that separation that you feel you would say there's nothing that separates me from the love of God that you would feel that I can tell you what I do as a church leader often makes me feel like I have failed you guys. I know it sounds crazy, but internally I am my worst critic. And there are many times where I just feel like, man, I should have done better for them,
or I didn't do enough to lead through that or whatever it might be. A couple of years ago, you've heard me talk about this because it was a pivotal point in my life, but Kathleen and I went to a pastor's retreat for a week, not out of responding to anything bad, it was proactive. It was like, hey, we send our pastors to go to this thing and work through stuff or whatever. And while I was there, it became very apparent to me that I was being really harsh with myself. In the mornings, we would sit with a counselor and they would kind of guide us through some things. It was wonderful. The homework was like, go read the Bible on the beach and pray, isn't that amazing? Grateful for this church sending me there to do that. And one afternoon, I'm sitting on the beach, reading the Bible and trying to pray. And it might not sound that profound to you, but it was super profound to me and it's what I needed to hear. Do you ever have those moments where it's like you try to tell somebody else, but you can't really grasp it, but for you, it was exactly what you needed. You know what I'm talking about? I was sitting on the beach, reading my Bible, praying. My wife was nearby and I felt God tell me the word gentle.
And I knew exactly what was happening, that he was making it clear that I was being really harsh with myself. It's like, you're being really harsh, being really critical, be gentle with yourself. And in that moment, I just felt him kind of, I don't know. You know what I mean? Like, it was like he was wrapping his arm around me and saying, hey, I know this is hard work. It's good. I know you're hard on yourself and all. Just be gentle with yourself. I love you. And my guess is that some of you, when it comes to doubting God's love, you are your worst critic. You're really hard on yourself. And when you look in the mirror, you don't like yourself. You don't like the way you look. When you look at your bank account, you feel like you failed. You're not earning enough. Are your own worst critic. And my prayer is that today, you would stop being so harsh with yourself and feel God wrap his arm around you and say, hey, just be gentle with yourself. I love you. You're mine. You have value because I've given it to you.
All the things that are your mistakes and your flaws, I got it, but cover it. Just be gentle and feel his love. And so what I want us to do to start, and I'm gonna come back up here in a minute, we're gonna take about the next 20 minutes to respond to God's love. And all I want us to do first is just stand where you are, stand up, and we're just gonna sing. And I hope that you will sing in response to God's love over your life. And I don't know if they can But if you can bring the lights up for just a moment So they can see where they're going Right here at the front of the stage on either side They're covered with a tablecloth They're gonna go ahead and take that off These are communion stations And during the next song or so Whenever you're ready I invite you, come up and take communion. You say, well, I don't deserve to take communion. That's the point that we don't deserve this gift of God. And so I just invite you, if you see Jesus as one who loves you and you want him to be your savior, come take communion. The bread represents his body and the juice represents his blood. And it's a reminder that he died to pay the price for our sin, that yes, sin demanded a death and Jesus died that death for you, okay? So on your own time, come and take communion. You or family member, I really don't care how you do it, but there's that station right there on either side of the stage. I also wanna invite our prayer team. I know we've got some people that are some volunteers and staff, if you'll come up here by the stage. And also, if you are the person that is not on the prayer team or on the staff or whatever,
but you're like, I think Luke would want me to come up and pray with people, you're right. So I just invite you, if you kind of have that position and you know, hey, I think Luke would want me to come pray with people, then just come up here and be ready to pray. And my ask is that you not only go and take communion and say, God, thank you for your love, but that you would come and be prayed over, that we would pray God's love over you, that you would feel his love today. The third thing is there's a couple of tables at the end of each of these rows. If you wanna look behind you, you can see. Those tables have cards on them with a pen and it's for you to keep. Nobody's gonna read this. You don't need to turn it in. You do it, whatever you want. But here's my vision for those cards. I want you to go to that table and on the card, I want you to write down the lie or maybe it feels like a truth that has limited your identity in Christ. And yeah, I know you failed. I know you messed up, but it's not your identity. Whatever that lie or that false identity is, I want you to write it down on one side of that card. And it could be, God doesn't love me. It's a lie.
Write it down. It could be that you are too sinful to be saved. Maybe you wanna get real specific and write down the specific thing. Nobody's gonna read it. This is for you. Write it down on one side. And then I want you to flip it over and I want you to write down the truth. Maybe the truth, God does love me. You are worthy of his love because he says so. And maybe you need to get more specific on what you write on that other side of the card too. So you write the lie on one side or the false identity on one side and then flip it over and write down the truth. Write down the goodness of God on that other side, okay? So we've got the tables to go write down those identities on the card. Come down, let somebody pray for you. And then stop by the communion stations. And I just wanna remind you in communion, we're not reflecting on our sin in a way that drives us towards guilt and shame. We say, man, I can't believe what I've done and it's making me feel guilty. It's making me feel shame. That will drive you to continue sinning. Instead, when you come to communion and you reflect on your sin,
I want you to feel gratitude and to say, God, thank you for loving me. Thank you for covering my sin. That will drive you towards repentance, freedom and new life, okay? Let me pray again as we enter into this time of reflection where you can stop by, fill out a card, be prayed over and take communion. Heavenly Father, we set aside this next 10 minutes for you. We numb ourselves to try to get away from the pain or feeling like we're not enough or whatever. I just pray right now that we would feel your love and that's it for the next few moments. And we are just so grateful that you sent Jesus to cover our sin. We wanna respond to your love right now. It's in the name of Jesus that we pray, amen. It's in the name of Jesus that we pray.
It's in the name of Jesus that we pray. Amen.
