We are going to sing this song again, because it's a worship night, and I really like this bridge, but here's the reason. You see in the Bible, in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, how the presence of the Lord shows up as a mighty wind and a mighty fire. And I don't know what kind of week you had, but I think we can all agree that we need His presence. So before we ask Him for a single thing, we're just going to take a moment and pursue His presence. We know that He shows up as a mighty wind. We know that He shows up as a mighty fire. We know that He shows up, because if my people who are called by my name would humble themselves and pray, seek my face, turn from their wicked ways, and He says, I will hear it from heaven. I will forgive their sins, and I will heal their land. Who needs a fresh touch from the Holy Spirit tonight?

That's what we're running after. I want to make something really clear, that God is already in the room. He's already moving, but when we sing a song over and over, it makes our awareness bigger of Him, and that's the important part tonight. Can we lift our hands all over the room and sing this? Thank you, church, hallelujah. Man, it's always so special getting to worship with you. And I wanna take a minute and just welcome you here to our worship night tonight. I hope you're excited. We're thankful that you are here. And my prayer is that over the next hour, you'll have the opportunity to draw close to the God who makes all things new. And when you walked in tonight, there should have been some communion on your seat. I wanna invite you to just grab that. And students up here at the front, you're gonna have one of your pastors give you some communion. And if you're joining us online, we're so thankful that you're here. You can go ahead and grab some juice and bread and join us as well. But I can think about August, and I know that it feels like kind of like the starting line to a marathon when you get into August. Because it feels like everything starts picking back up. School's back and sports start back up and your calendar gets full. And it's so easy for our minds and our hearts to start getting anxious about tomorrow. And so I just wanna invite you for a moment to take a deep breath. Because the God who holds the galaxies together

is not scared of your calendar. And the God who holds all tomorrows in his hand has already gone before you. So you don't have to be afraid. In fact, in the book of Psalms, it says, be still and know that I'm God. And that word be still does not mean do nothing. It means let go of your anxieties, your plans, your expectations, because God is on his throne and he's present tonight as he's inviting us into his presence. So whatever you walked in the door with today, worries and doubts and questions and burdens, lay them at the feet of Jesus. That's what we do when we come to the Lord's table together. When we take communion, we're reminded that the reason why we're able to be still is because of Jesus. We can have peace with God. His body was broken for us. His blood was poured out for us so that we can experience the faithfulness and the goodness of God. And so tonight we fix our eyes on Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us. And we prepare our hearts to worship him. If you would, you can take the wafer and hold it in your hand for a moment. And it says in his word that as they were eating, Jesus took some bread and he blessed it.

And then he broke it in pieces and he gave it to the disciples saying, take this and eat it for this is my body. You may take the bread. And it says he took the cup and he gave thanks to God for it. Then he gave it to them and said, each of you drink of it for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. And it's poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. You may take the cup. So Father, we pray that in the next few moments you would speak to our hearts. Any burdens or fears or anxieties, we would lay them down because you're worthy. I pray peace over our hearts and our minds in the next few minutes we would spend with you just being in your presence. Jesus, we love you, we thank you. And we ask for all this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen. High five somebody before you take your seat, all right? Well, good evening and welcome to Worship Night tonight. Let me say this, as we enter into August, one of the things we need to do is look back over the summer and all that God has been doing at Battle Creek Church through all of you. It's been a great summer. In fact, there's been some ups and some downs, but it has been a great summer. And I don't want to lose sight of all of that. This summer, we took 1,200 students to camp. And then we took some of them to Egypt, across the world to Egypt. We didn't just tell them about missions. We're showing them what missions is all about. And I know from experience that a trip like that is not just a trip that you check off as a student. It's actually a life-altering and a life-changing trip. It wasn't just our students at all of our campuses. We had incredible children's camps this summer for our elementary school kids. We saw Haven create a place for families

who often feel overlooked. And they were seen, and they were valued, and they were loved, and they belonged, and they were given the opportunity to encounter Jesus. And church, I just want to remind you, these are not just successful ministry events. And they're not just something we check off on a summer ministry calendar. That's the mission of Battle Creek Church, to help all people of all ages, all the time, come on, finish it with me, advance in their journey with Jesus Christ. And we should celebrate that. And we should never become so accustomed to God moving that we stop being amazed when He does. And obviously, we've had some highs this summer. We've had some challenging moments this summer. For me, personally, it did not go the way I expected the summer to go, from a broken wrist to a tick bite and extreme fatigue. It was not at all the way I planned the summer. I would, in fact, I would just say to you that, several of you asked, tell me about what that is about. I hoped that I would get some Spider-Man effect from that bite. Apparently, what ticks do is suck blood out of other people and jump. Like, that's all they're any good at doing. But I think they must be really tired all the time because that's where I was.

When I finally went to the ER on July 4th, in fact, that morning, Meredith said, if we're going to the ER, let's go this morning. Like, I don't wanna go this evening with all the morons that lost all their fingers and blew them off. Like, let's go this morning. And I said, I'm not going. You've been saying for four days, just hush. I'm not going. And I had been on three different antibiotics and three different steroids and had CAT scans and all kinds of stuff done and just was tanking. And that afternoon, I called a friend who is a head nurse in the ER and just said a couple things. Number one, we're looking for something freaky weird. Like, we've done everything else and there's nothing there. Like, we're looking for a weird thing. We need blood work. I need you to promise me two things. Number one, I'm not waiting when I get there. And number two, nobody on your staff is gonna ask me to spend the night. And if you'll agree to those two things, I'll come. And he said, come on right now. And I went and literally the ER doctor walks in, says, I went to Egypt with you 20 years ago. And I said, I don't remember that, but I'm thanking God you're here right now. And when they did the blood work,

he came back and said, Pastor Alex, you're four hours away from having sepsis. If you'd waited till tomorrow to come, we'd be talking about how to save organs. Like what is happening in your body is a really big deal. And there's only one antibiotic in the world that will treat this tick-borne illness. And I'm like, praise the Lord that we went today. Maris looked at me and was like, you never listen. And within a few days, I started turning the corner and feeling better, the fatigue lasted a few weeks. I would say this last week, I went from 80% to 90% of energy. And Maris would testify that my 90% is more than most of your 100%. And so I'm just thankful that the Lord is bringing me along. But I want you to remember this, that the last message I preached on this stage was about spiritual warfare. And about linking shields of faith. And two days later, I went down for a few weeks. And during that time, let me just tell you, God taught me a lot about pruning. I wanna share some of that with you tonight. But he also used that time to remind me of something that I know, but something that I need to be reminded of from time to time. And that's that this church does not depend on me, which is a really, really, really good thing.

And it's really good news, quite honestly. And while I wasn't altogether around, the church kept being the church. The gospel was preached, people were loved, kids met Jesus, students worshiped, people were baptized, campuses ministered to their communities, and ministry happened. And when we look back on a summer like this, a couple of things happen. First, it energizes us to move forward. But there are things about it that can make us feel tired. And I don't wanna ignore that today. But at the same time, I want us to keep the momentum up because I know how hard momentum is to recreate. And I went to the word looking for a word about that. And I ended up in this passage in 1 Samuel 7 that I keep coming back to. And in this passage, Israel has been through a very difficult season. There's been conflict and fear and uncertainty, but God comes through. And before Samuel moves everyone into the next battle, but before they create another plan, before they start thinking about what is next, Samuel leads the people to stop. And I want you to look at this passage as we throw it up on the screen. Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shinn.

He named it Ebenezer, saying, thus far, the Lord has helped us. I love those words, thus far. Up to that point, it wasn't easy. If it were always easy, we would not need the Lord, right? And, but it's always worth it. Why? Because God was there and he was their help. And again, if it was easy, they don't need God. And I can just say to you personally today, thus far, the Lord has helped me. And I can look across this room and say that about us. Thus far, the Lord has helped Battle Creek Church and God is still faithful. The gospel is still good. Jesus is still changing lives. And thus far, he has helped us. But there's another side to thus far, meaning what? We're not finished. And there's still people in our cities who don't know Jesus. There are still marriages that need all kinds of hope. There are still people with special needs who wonder if there is a place for them. There are people in prisons. I just read a letter, a three-page letter, four-page letter from a prisoner in Oregon who's watching our messages on that Pando app in the prison and God saved him. And his life has changed. He said, how many years, Catherine, what did he say?

27 years, 37, I don't remember. Something, long time that he sentenced to. And zero understanding of most of what we're saying. He said, I hear you say this phrase to all of our campuses. He said, is that a metaphor or do you have schools? And then he said, then you say, what was the other phrase that he said? You say to the students. He said, because if you have a school or a Christian school, I would like to enroll in it. And it just shows you that we use phrases all the time that the average bear is like, what are you talking about? But let me just say to all who are watching tonight, and if this is played at Allen Gamble one night soon, we, Battle Creek Church, we exist to glorify God by helping all people of all ages, all the time, advance in their journey with Christ. So yeah, buddy, we'll have you. And I don't want us to simply ask God to bless our plans. I want us tonight to ask God what it is. He wants to do through us. And maybe more importantly, God, who do we need to become to be what you want to do and use at Battle Creek Church? And so yesterday I met with all of our staff from all of our campuses who were gathered here, and I gave them five things that I want them to pray about. And I want to let you in to what I asked them to pray about, but quite honest, I think we should all pray these five things. And here's the first one. God, help me stay close to you. That's what I told the staff yesterday. Hear me. You're not just a minister, and you're not just a staff member. You are first and foremost a child of God. I'm a child. I'm not just a spiritual parent. I'm a sheep. I'm not just a shepherd, right? And before I can lead this church, I have to lead myself, and that means being led by the Father. And so I want to ask you, would you just, at all of our campuses tonight, would you just bow your heads,

and would you just pray that prayer for a minute, personally, about yourself? Not about your spouse, not about your children, just yourself. Would you just pray, God, help me in this season to stay incredibly close to you, personally? A metaphor I often pray in this line of prayer is, God, would you make my feet like the hind feet of an animal, following you down the best pathway for my life? I'm not interested in a great one. I'm certainly not interested in a good one or an average one. I want to walk the best pathway right behind you. Here's a second prayer request. God, give us your heart for all people. When you walk with Jesus through the Gospels, what you see over and over and over again is Jesus could stand in a crowd and still see one person. He did both all the time. He did both all the time. Occasionally, somebody will say to me, hey, pastor, I think we're going to go find a smaller church. And I always bless people out the door. But personally, I'm thankful, super, super thankful to be a part of a church that is small enough to see individuals, but big enough to make an impact across this world. And church, I just want to say to you in a world filled with AI, and it's coming quick, and social media, it has never been more important for each of us and everyone who comes to this church to be connected and discipled beyond the algorithm, but beyond where they're going to be led in this culture. We got to know people. We got to understand people. We got to be connected to people and we have to disciple them beyond all of that. And so God don't let us become so busy doing ministry that we don't see people. Remind us that attendance numbers are people people that have names and have stories and all of those stories and names matter to God. God's eyes are not just on the crowd, but the one in the crowd who is hurting and the person who is far from God and is overlooked. And the person is who doesn't know it yet, but is one invitation away, one conversation away, one moment away from taking a step toward Jesus. God, give us your heart for all people. What would you pray that for yourself? Take a minute. Invite him to give you a heart transplant and a new heart that is soft and not stoned.

and tender and beats with his heart for people. As we move several weeks from now into a gospel Sunday, would you ask him to specifically give you his heart for a person? That you're supposed to invest in and invite to a place where they could come to know Jesus personally. The third prayer is God make us disciple makers. The mission is not just to fill rooms or create attenders. It is to help people advance in their journey. And the only way according to the Bible to do that is to make disciples. And I'm asking God, I'm asking God to help us lead people to know him more. To follow him more closely, to be more like him. Meaning they will discover their purpose and eventually help somebody else do the same. But it has to start with us. We can't lead people to a place that we're not willing to go ourselves. So take a moment. And would you just ask God to make you a disciple maker? The people in your office and the people at your school and the people you work with and the people you work out with and whatever facet of life you're in. Would you just ask God, make me a disciple maker? That at the end of this journey, I can look back and not just have had friends and family, but disciples. People that I influenced and brought along in the faith. And God, would you make us one church with one mission? And I'm praying that God protects us from silos and protects us from territorialism and protects us from comparison and competition and from believing that my campus or my ministry or my department or my idea or my recognition

matters more than your mission, God. And Lord, would you protect us from being manipulated and used by the enemy who wants nothing more than to divide and distract and deceive and destroy what God is doing right here. And we want to celebrate what God is doing anywhere at Battle Creek and quite honestly beyond Battle Creek for that matter. Their win is our win, we're in the same family. And may we never choose me over we. So take a moment if you would church and pray that God would make us one church with one mission. And lastly, God, would you do through us what only you can do? Maybe more than anything else this summer reminded me that I need Jesus moment by moment, breath by breath. We need Jesus. Because we can have talented people and great facilities and great music and great preaching and great systems and great strategy and great plans. But it can all be gone in an instant because Jesus said, apart from me, you can do nothing. Ask the Holy Spirit to keep you dependent on him. The one thing I cherish about days of lack of health is I was constantly aware of my dependence. One of the prayers that I prayed over and over and over is God, take anything out that's not of you. remove anything that does not belong. In other words, I need the Holy Spirit to prune me. And let me tell you something about church.

The Holy Spirit's always pruning his church, always. And sometimes a tree is pruned, and clearly the fruit and the branch is unhealthy that is being pruned off. It's got worms or parasites or bacteria on it. But often, the branch and the fruit that is cut off is healthy fruit. Because he's concerned of the quality of the rest of the fruit. And sometimes it's a shoot that will never produce fruit. It just steals energy from the tree. But hear me, two things are true of every pruning. Number one, it's always painful, always. And the second thing that's always true of every pruning is it leads to growth and it leads to more fruit. Thus far, the Lord has helped us. He's been faithful before. He's faithful now. And we believe, church, he'll be faithful again. So God, help me stay close to you. Give me the heart, your heart, for all people. Make me a disciple maker. Make us one church with one mission and do through us what only you can do. I read recently the story of an athlete during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia. And he stood out over the whole Olympics. Not because of where he placed in the standings, but how he finished his event. The guy's name is Eric Mousambabi, that's him in the pool.

He's from Equatorial Guinea, I think is how you say the name of that country. He started the swim team six months before the Olympics. And he learned to swim two months before that. As in he learned to swim in a hotel swimming pool two months before he joined the swimming team. But through the luck of the draw and the way that the Olympic qualifying works, Eric made his way to the Olympics for his country to swim the 100-meter freestyle swim. And he actually won his heat, but that's not important. What's important is how he did it. Because as he dove in the pool, he didn't understand pacing himself at all yet. He'd only done it a few times. And he gave it all he had as he swam out of the chute the first 50 meters. And if you don't know, 100 meters is there and back. It's just one time. Sometimes these people do this like all day long. But this race is just one time, there and back. And he hit the wall and turned the best he could. And he said when he turned the wall, he was just totally gassed. His arms felt like lead. Lactic acid had moved into every muscle in his body. And he felt like he was going to sink. And even though he's the bottom of the heat, because he was the only one in his heat, because the other two swimmers disqualified

because they went early. All he had to do was finish the lap to qualify to move to the next round. But there was a moment where he said he thought about just pulling up and swimming up and quitting and just getting out of the pool. But then something happened. The whole crowd who had come to watch supreme athletes started clapping and cheering. And they stood to their feet and they're cheering this man on, who, when he hit that wall, by the way, that his time when he hit that wall was double what the other people did there and back. And he finished the race and with a time that was twice that of the next competitor. But the article went on to say, because it's not where you finish, it's how you finish. And the crowd is cheering him on. And he said, as he heard the crowd, he started to swim faster. His arms got lighter, he got quicker. He began to swim like an eel, is what he said, through the water. And it was a fat eel, but it was an eel, right? And he's swimming through the water. And what was the difference? He was encouraged. What does that word mean? To be filled with courage.

When you encourage someone, you put courage in them. And I just want to say this tonight to all of our teachers and principals and administrators and people that work at schools every day in any capacity. I know there have to be moments where you feel all alone in the middle of an Olympic-sized swimming pool and your arms feel like they're lead and your legs are tired and you want to quit, you want to stop, you want to get out of the pool. And again, it's not where you finish, it's how you finish. And as you start this school year, and I know every year you start it with all the positivity in the world, and by September you're feeling it, right? Assignments due, grades to pass. put in student problems, 60,000 vapes at your junior high. I told one principal who showed me the drawers of vapes, I'm like, you should start a business. I'm like, sell these back, you know, and not to the kids. But here's the thing tonight, I wanna encourage you. And I want you to know your faith family is incredibly proud of you and we want the best for you. And so does your heavenly father, we're cheering you on. We wanna put courage in you as you go back into perhaps the greatest mission field in our world, the school system. And so if that's you, you are a employee at a school or a principal, administrator, whatever it is, teacher, security, whatever all the jobs are, would you just stand your feet at all of our campuses?

Just stand up. And would you just right now just clap for them, please? We're proud of you. And we're praying God's best on you and his faith in you. Courage all over you. about what happens at this age, do you know that of people who come to know Jesus Christ, 93% of all the people who come to know Jesus Christ do so before they're 17 years old. 93%, which means you going into your school with Jesus in your heart is one of the greatest opportunities the kingdom of God has. On you, for you to carry Jesus, and some of you are like, well, I'm not significant enough. I'm not popular enough. I'm not known enough. I don't perform well enough in my sport or my band or whatever to even be noticed. That's a lie. You have some level of influence. God made you special and unique, one of a kind, and he wants to use you, and he can use you, and many of you have seen him use you, and I want us to pray over you. Church, at every campus, would you just stand and put your hands towards these kids, and would you just pray out loud, everywhere, across every campus. That will not confuse your heavenly father, but let these students hear your voice. There's something about singing Christianity has always been a singing faith And so I just want to encourage you what while the band comes to lead us we're gonna have some staff teams some Prayer warriors that are gonna stand at the front of every campus With with oil in their hand getting ready to receive people and scripture tells us to anoint with oil and pray for physical healing and oil is just symbolic of in Scripture for consecration the Spirit And it demonstrates being set apart for a special work. So that's what we do We just take God at his word and and we anoint with oil and I just want to ask you don't come asking for healing if you refuse to believe for healing and And don't come if you refuse to give the person who's gonna pray over you the authority to pray for you And we're gonna believe God and we're gonna take him at his word and because of what Jesus endured on our behalf we just believe healing is available to the children of God.
