And his story takes us directly, and I want to share it with you, it takes us directly to the heart, to the core, to the essence of what Axios is. Because a life that matters begins when you realize that you matter. A life with purpose begins when you realize that you really have value. And this connects us to our first point of today, and it is the God who sees me. When we get to Genesis chapter 16, Agar is trapped in a story that, to a great extent, other people developed for her.
She is trapped in a story that other people wrote for her. Abraham and Sarai have a promise from God, and God has promised them a son, but time passes and that son does not arrive, the promise does not arrive. And they do something that we all have the tendency to do, just like Sara. They decide to help God. Abraham and Sara decide to help God. So Sara, at that time she was called Sarai, takes her servant Agar and turns her into part of the solution to a problem that she had. Agar gets pregnant, their relationship deteriorates, there is conflict, there is mistreatment, there is rejection, and finally Agar decides to flee to the desert. Think about this woman. She is pregnant and alone in the middle of the desert. In fact, she is living the consequences of decisions that, to a great extent, other people took for her. And I know that there are people at the reach of my voice who understand that feeling perfectly. We sometimes live in the consequences of the decisions of other people. There are seasons in which we arrive and think, I did not choose this. I did not choose what that person did. And yet, she is living the consequences. And that is where Agar is. She is in the desert. And it says in Genesis 16, chapter 7, The angel of the Lord found her near a spring in the desert. This is important because it does not say that Agar found God. Listen to this carefully. It says, God found Agar. This is important. She was fleeing from people, but there was a God that she could not escape from. She was far from all that was known, but she was not out of God's reach.
Centuries after this, the psalmist David expresses this same reality in Psalm 139. He says, Where could I run away from your Spirit? In verse 7. Where could I run away from your presence? And the rest of the psalm, we do not have it on the screen. I did not ask them to put it. But if you keep reading, you know what it says. If I went up to heaven, you would be there. If I laid my bed and my bed in the depths of the domains of death, you would also be there. If I rose above the wings of dawn, or if I settled at the ends of the sea, still there, your hand would guide me. Your right hand would hold me. And if I said that darkness would hide me, listen to this carefully, that the light should become night around me, nor would the darkness be dark for you. And even the night would be clear like the dawn, the same are for you the darkness than the light. I am fascinated by this psalm. Agar was living Psalm 139, hundreds of years before Psalm 139 was written. A foreigner, an emigrant, running through the desert, asking himself, God, can you see me here? And God responds, Agar, I see you. Agar, I see you. And I think that is a word that someone has to hear today. God sees you here.
God sees you exactly where you are. In this season, in this desert, in this situation where you are, that you still don't know exactly how you are going to solve. God not only knows where you are, God knows how you got there. He knows the complete story. He knows the decisions that others made. He knows your own decisions, and also knows your wounds. And even knowing everything, He tells you, today I see you where you are. There are people who have spent so many years being defined by something that happened to them that they have already begun to confuse their history with their identity. But listen to this. What happened to you can be part of your history without having the authority to determine your value.
Now, under his stature, I should say like me, right? I mean, under his stature, and he can't see above the crowd, what does he do? He runs in front of the crowd and climbs a tree, and in fact, a tree, specifically, it's called Ficus sycomorum, a sycomorum, and that sycomorum has some unique peculiarities. It has low branches and a lot, a lot of foliage. Do you see where the story is going? A lot, a lot of foliage. Low branches and dense leaves. So, Zacchaeus finds a place from where he can see,
but he can't be seen. You're already thinking of people who come to church, right? Where can I see better, and where is the next exit door? I don't know a lot of English, but I know exit. What's going on? It's a tremendously human image. I want to be close enough to Jesus to see him, to feel him, but I'm not sure I want to be exposed enough for him to see me. It can happen anywhere, any church. You can be close, you can come here, you can sing, you can listen to sermons, you can join a group, you can even know the Bible, you can know when to raise your hands, when to lower them, and when to say amen, and still have whole parts of your heart that are behind the leaves. Zacchaeus thinks he's looking at Jesus, but when Jesus comes to the place, he stops and looks where Zacchaeus is. He looks up, and in verse 5, Luke tells us in chapter 19 that Jesus said, Zacchaeus, come down at once, because I have to stay at your house today. Can you imagine? You're covered with all the leaves, sitting down, well-positioned, you have the best view of the whole parade,
you're going to see Jesus around here, when he turns the corner, when he comes, he passes by, he's close enough to hear what he's going to say to the people. And all of a sudden, Jesus looks, and inside the leaves, he sees you, and he calls you by your name, and he says, get down from there, because I want to go to your house today. The people of Jericho, I'm sure they had a lot of nicknames, and they're like the Latinos, the Palestinians, they had a lot of nicknames. I mean, I put them here, and then I took them off. Maybe I said, thief, traitor, sinner, and I know you're going to put the rest. But Jesus didn't start with any nickname. He didn't start with any label that people have put on him. He started with his name. The grace of God, see what you did, without reducing you to what you did. Jesus doesn't ignore the sin of looting, but he doesn't allow the sin of looting to have the last word on his identity. Jesus tells him, looting, get down. In other words, looting, you don't have to hide anymore. Looting, you don't have to hide anymore, I see you. Today, I have to stay in your house. And it wasn't out of anger, it wasn't out of anger, it wasn't out of rejection, it wasn't out of contempt,
it wasn't out of minimizing it, it was out of love. He said, looting, I see you, I want to stay in your house. I want to enter your heart. Looting wanted to observe Jesus from a safe distance. Safe, but Jesus wanted a relationship. Jesus wanted a relationship, and here comes, I want to briefly share with you another man, because this is in your AXIOS guide, and if you want all the details, get a guide, register in a group and come on Sunday. But in chapter 10 of Mark, another young man is introduced. We're going to park here, to loot, and we're going to talk about this third young man. We don't know his name. In fact, the scripture refers to him as the rich young man. Here you have two men. Both were rich, both had influence, both had a lot of money. He also had a lot of money, but unlike looting, this rich young man was respected for his conduct, admired for his morals, and he was influential because he was a young man, a young leader. He doesn't hide in a tree. In fact, he comes to where Jesus is, face to face. Direct, he walks directly to Jesus but without realizing it, he also had a hiding place. Looting is hidden behind his leaves, but the rich young man is hidden behind his curriculum. When Jesus speaks to him about the commandments, what was his answer? Maestro, I have already accomplished all of this, look at me, look at how gallant I am, how brave I am. I have accomplished all of this since I was young. I don't know how old I was, I was young, rich, but he says, since I was young, I have already accomplished all of this.
Look at what I have done, look at my record, look at my history, look at what kind and type of person I am. Two men, two hiding places. Looting was the shame. He said, if you really knew who I am, Jesus, you would not love me. And he hid behind his leaves. But the rich young man says, if I do enough and I hide behind the ministry, my work, my performance and my achievements, I will prove that I must be loved. One is hiding behind the bad things he has done, and the other is hiding behind the good things he has done, but both are hidden. And here Tim Keller, the pre-Epitarean pastor, puts words to one of the deepest fears of the human heart. He says, being loved without being known is comforting, but superficial. Being loved without being known is comforting, but superficial. You have not met people, or you connect with people who have good chemistry, who are super nice, and you say, I like them very much, I love them very much. But you have never had a difference of opinion, you have never fought with them, you have never had an opposite idea. It is superficial love. Being known, says Tim Keller, and not loved, is our greatest fear. But being fully known and truly loved is very similar to being loved by God. And that is exactly what these stories are showing us. Our greatest fear is being truly known and rejected. But the Gospel answers that fear. He already knows you and still loves you. He knows everything about you and still loves you deeply. Marcos includes a beautiful and particular detail in verse 21 of chapter 10. I don't want to go over those words too quickly because it says, Jesus, the rich young man is talking here, Jesus looked at him with love. Jesus looked at him with love. In fact, even today we know something interesting about what happens when two people look into each other's eyes. In fact, there are exercises that are based on some studies of psychology in particular, where they put you to look at that other person, they become a couple, or parents and children, to look at each other for four consecutive minutes without changing their gaze.
From eye to eye. Just by saying it, some got nervous. Four minutes looking at this person in the eye. Why? Because studies on mutual gaze show that when two people establish visual contact, their brains synchronize, they lower their guard, they respond to vulnerability, and in fact the brain begins to release a substance called oxytocin, oxytocin, which is associated with pleasure, with bond, and with trust. What psychologists say today, Jesus already knew it a long time ago, that's why he looks at you, he looked at Zacchaeus, he looked at the rich young man, and what does he say? He looked at him and loved him. Mark is telling us, his gaze communicated love. His gaze did not communicate rejection or contempt. His gaze communicated, before confronting what Jesus did, he looked at him with love. Before pointing out what still controlled his heart, he looked at him and loved him. And there is the Gospel. Jesus looks at you and comes closer. You don't need to hide the worst part of Jesus, your worst part of Jesus.
He already knows it. Read Psalm 139. You don't need to impress him with your best performance. He doesn't need your CV either. He sees you completely and loves you. That doesn't mean that his love leaves you where you are. Jesus receives you from where you are, but he loves you too much to leave you a slave to what you hide. This is important. It is important that we understand this. Why? Because grace does not expose to humiliate you. Grace reveals to restore you. There are people who live in a religion of fear and in a God of fear who is not the God of Christianity. Grace does not expose to humiliate. Grace reveals to restore. Now, look at these three people. Agar, Zacchaeus, and the rich young man. Agar needs to discover that he is seen. Zacchaeus needs to get out of the hiding place between the leaves. And the rich young man needs to stop proving that he is worth. But all three need the same grace. And here is the question, where are you? Where are you? Because Jesus sees you. The question is not if he knows you. The question is, what are you going to do with his love? What are you going to do with his gaze? Zacchaeus allows his gaze to transform him. The rich young man, what does he do? He says, I can not with this. And he moves away. And here is a truth that we need to remember. Grace does not transform who we appear to be. Grace transforms who we are when we present ourselves with honesty before God. Grace can not transform your mask, can not transform my facade, can not transform the pain that I hide behind the rest of the people.
The problem was never if Jesus loved him. He loved all three of them. The difference was what they did with that love. And that brings us back to Axios. When you know you are seen, you can start to see. Jesus enters the house of Zacchaeus. He shares the table with him. And he treats Zacchaeus with dignity. He elevates that human being as they had never done before. He treats him with a dignity that Zacchaeus possibly had not experienced for a long time. And something surprising happens. Look at verse number 8. Look at the answer of Zacchaeus in Luke 19 verse 8. Look Lord, right now I will give the poor half of my goods. And if in something I have defrauded someone. And he knew he had done a lot of cheating and defrauded a lot of people. I will give him back four times the amount. That is fundamental. And it is worth having us here because those numbers are important. Because they reveal something about what had happened inside the heart of Zacchaeus. The biblical standard established that if you had stolen from someone. The standard and the law of restitution in the Old Testament said. Give him what you stole and give him 20%. But what did Zacchaeus say? There is such a profound answer of the grace of God. And he is so grateful for what Jesus has done in him. Just by touching him. Just by seeing him. And him receiving what he says. I will not keep the minimum standard of 20%.
I will give him back four times what I took from him. And once he pays, I will give him back half of what I have. That is not an obligation. That is generosity. But what happened here? Zacchaeus is not giving to be accepted by Jesus. Do you hear this well? Are you with me? He is not giving to earn the favor of Jesus. Nor the forgiveness of Jesus. Nor the love of Jesus. Nor the look of Jesus. He is giving because he was already accepted by Jesus. Generosity did not produce grace. Grace produced generosity. Grace produced transformation. And that transformation produced generosity in gratitude. When Jesus sees him in that tree. And calls him by his name. And says I will go with you to your house. There is no one. No one wants to go to your house. But I want to go to your house. I want to go to your house. And calls him by his name. and sits at his table where the religious detested him, the people detested him, society marginalized him. Looting receives something that his money had never been able to buy. The dignity of being known and loved.
The dignity of being truly known and loved. That is Axios. That, Northlake family, is Axios. Looting does not give to gain value, it gives because it has just received value. What am I saying? Grace comes first, transformation comes later. People want to transform themselves by their own effort. It's not that I have to do this, and I have to do that, and I have to do that, and before I take communion, and before I go to church, I invite people and they say, no, I can't go to church because I'm sick. They want to transform themselves. If you could transform yourself, you would have already transformed. Grace comes first, transformation comes later. But we do it the other way around. And I think that here is one of the reasons why this series can become something that can transform our way of living. Because if you and I are still trying to show that we have value. Are you with me so far? There are so many ways to show that we have value. But listen to this. Even our good works end up being about me.
They end up being about you. Why? Because when I don't know that I have value, I'm looking for recognition. I'll leave it there for you to sit down. You're looking for someone to realize. If someone realized everything I do and no one sees it. If someone realized everything I do and no one sees it. Why? Because we always need something in return. But when my value is already in Christ, I can add value without needing that you increase mine. I can give because I already received value. Not just so that you give me value. I can serve without needing recognition. I can celebrate another person without feeling that their success decreases mine. Why? Because I don't need to take away your value to increase mine. My value has already been established by the one who saw me and his name is Jesus Christ. Look at what happens with looting. Before meeting Jesus, looting lived looking at itself. Looking at itself. But after being seen,
he sees the need. He sees the poor. He sees who he was wrong with. He sees the people he defrauded. He sees where he can repair what he broke. What he broke. And he starts asking himself. Looting immediately as a product of grace and of that exchange. How can I add value where I took it before? That is not a coincidence. Because when you know you are seen, then you start to see. And there is the movement of this whole series. We are seen. We are loved. We are transformed. And then we see and add value to others. Action is not a campaign of modification of conduct. Action is not a campaign to become a better person. You do not become a better person with your actions. You become a better person through the blood of Jesus Christ that was poured on the cross of Calvary and through which you were forgiven. It is much deeper. Because Action begins with the Gospel. It begins by allowing God to answer a question
that lives in our depths. Does it really matter? Does it really matter? And the answer is yes. The answer is yes. At the end of the story, Sakeo says, at the end of the story of Sakeo, Jesus says in verse 10 of chapter 19, Because the Son of Man came to seek and to save what had been lost. Sakeo thought that he was looking for Jesus. But it was Jesus who was looking for Sakeo. Agar thought that she was alone in the desert. But God went out to find Agar. And maybe you arrived today thinking, I am trying to find God. And the reality is God went out to look for you. God went out to give His love for you. His grace.
I want to do in you in this season, I can't do it alone in a seat coming on Sundays. I have to do it in community, biblical community. I have to do it in the company of my brothers, in the company of my people,
in the company of others who let you know and show you. I see you, I see you. When you go out, I invite you, look for one of our guides, who will have the vest and the weird hat, you will find them easy. And ask him all the questions you want, all the questions you want. And he has information to register you in the groups, he has information to give you. But they can also pray for you. I invite you today, our leaders are ready to pray for you, to facilitate groups and to collaborate with you in this day of search for meaning. I invite you all to stand up. And I want you to answer the call where you are. The call today is not to come to the altar, the altar is there. The altar is to respond to the response, to the call of God. What is your response? I invite you to pray together. Lord, I thank you because you see us, you look at us. Thank you because you find us right where we are. In places where we think we are alone. In our deserts, you find us. Behind the leaves, you see us. Behind our wounds, you see us. Behind all that we use to show courage. And today we just want to receive your grace. But the person today who feels invisible, I pray that they can hear your voice, that says, I see you. The person who has been hidden for so long can hear your voice that says, you can come out, you can come out. And for those who have spent years trying to show that they are enough, I pray that you give them rest in the finished work of Christ Jesus.
That during these weeks of groups that begin soon, we learn to live from the courage we have received from you. Because we have been seen and loved by Jesus. That we can say with pride, you are the God who sees me. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen and Amen. I invite you to participate in the lobby of the group registration. We are here to serve you and love you. May God keep you, bless you and make his face shine on you. We look forward to seeing you next Sunday. Thank you for being with us today. For keeping you during the whole program. I hope today's service has been a blessing for you. Both the praise and the worship. I hope you have brought hope, transformation and above all purpose in your life. We would love to hear from you. Here on the screen there is information about how to write us, how to send us your prayer requests and how to let us know what God is doing in your life. May God keep you and I hope to see you again very soon.
