Well, hello, City First family. We're so glad that each and every one of you are with us today. You are in the right place. And like you just heard, today's the last day of our At The Movie series, and we hope you've enjoyed it. If you're new to City First and you're wondering why we do this series, it's because it's fun for the whole family. We're a church where generations can thrive. And in Psalm 122, it says, "'I was glad when they said to me, "'Let us go to the house of the Lord.'" We want you all to be glad to come to church, not sad to come to church, but you come and you're full of joy and you experience the joy of the Lord here. We also do this because in Matthew 13, it says that Jesus was always teaching using stories and parables and illustrations. And movies are our modern day stories. They're our modern day parables. But please don't ever mistake the mission of At The Movies. Because yes, a movie can be consumed for entertainment purposes, but you are not at church today to be entertained. You are here to encounter the living God who loves you, who has a great plan and purpose for your life. And we want you to be equipped

to walk out this life of faith here on this earth. And so we're gonna take just a moment. I know we've already prayed, but I wanna pray one more time. And as we do, would you just settle your heart and just be ready to receive what God has for you? So Heavenly Father, we thank you for every person who's in this place and joining us at every location. God, we invite you to do what you wanna do. God, I pray that you would help me to get out of the way so you can say what you wanna say. May our hearts and our minds and our spirits be awake and alert and attuned to what you have for us. And in your name, amen. Well, today we're gonna be opening up the Bible to 1 Samuel 17, and we're gonna be reading a famous passage about a famous story that you're probably familiar with of David and Goliath. But I believe that there's a certain angle in this story that we often overlook that's really gonna resonate with us today. And what we know is in this story, David was the underdog. And in our movie, Miracle, the US Olympic hockey team was also the underdog. In the movie, coach Herb Brooks had a bold vision to take a group of amateur college players and win America's first gold medal in hockey in over 20 years. Now in this context, the stakes were huge because this was during the Cold War

and the US team will be playing the Soviet Union. So a victory over the Soviet Union was more than just about hockey, it would be a win for our nation. And many of you are familiar with both of these stories and you're probably familiar with the outcomes. If you're not, forgive me, gonna give you a spoiler alert here. However, David and Goliath happened 3,000 years ago and this Olympic story happened 45 years ago. So you've had a minute to figure out the outcome. But what happens is David ends up defeating Goliath, the US team has a victory over the Soviet Union and brings home the gold, okay? We all love a victory story. How many of you love an underdog story where the unfavored team ends up winning? It's exciting, you're rooting for the underdog, right? Well, maybe today as you're hearing this topic and we're talking about the underdogs winning, maybe you feel like you are in need of a victory in your own life. Because what we see here with both of these individuals, David beating Goliath and the US team beating and winning the gold Olympics is that yes, they won, but there was a cost to their victory. And a lot of times we want to have the victory, we wanna have the overcomer mindset, we wanna be the ones who are victorious, but we often overlook the fact

that there is a cost to the victory. And so maybe today you're saying I need a victory in my life, I need a victory in my marriage, I need a victory over a habit, over a hurt, over a hangup, over an addiction, I need a victory in this relationship, I need a victory. But we have to know that you don't accidentally have a victory, you don't stumble your way into having an overcomer mindset. It takes hard work, it even takes a miracle sometimes to have that victory, but here's the good news. As Christ followers, we don't just fight for a victory, we fight from a place of victory because of what Jesus has already done on the cross and the cost that he's already paid for the ultimate victory. So he did his part and now we get to do our part too. So today I'm gonna give you three lessons or three truths based on victory from our two stories of how we can have victory in our life and the cost that's often associated with it. So when Coach Herb Brooks first. stumbled the team, he had a big vision for winning gold. But before they could defeat their opponents, they had to stop fighting one another. As the team begins practices, rivalries begin to surface with each player being drafted from a different university to play for Team USA. Two of the guys start to fight during one of their routine plays.

Coach Herb encourages assistant coach Craig to let them fight it out. Other team members add in and try to break up the fight. They finally stop fighting and Herb asks, look like hockey to you? You wanna settle old scores? You're on the wrong team. He challenges them to move forward and start becoming a team right now. He begins with some introductions. The teammates start to introduce themselves, their hometowns and the schools they played for. It ends with the last teammate and when they ask him where he's from, he jokingly answers, wherever is not going to get me hit. The first lesson we learn in the cost of victory is we have to fight the right fight. How many of you know that there are endless opportunities to engage in some sort of fight or some sort of dispute all around us? Hello, comment section on social media. Endless opportunities to get in a fight, little ninja warrior back there saying whatever they want, like there's endless opportunity. Or maybe in your workplace, there's that Karen that you just wanna, or maybe there's that person in your family who always puts the container back in the fridge, even though it's empty. Or maybe even here in church,

there's that person that always sits in the seat that you wanna sit in, right? Wherever there are people, there is opportunity for fighting, dispute or division. And what the enemy wants is for people to attack other people instead of attacking the real issues and the real problems. He wants a husband and a wife attacking each other instead of attacking the real issue that would try to bring division into their marriage. And in 1 Samuel 17, we see that David had an opportunity, yes, to fight Goliath, but he also had an opportunity to engage in the wrong fight. And we're gonna look at what David did so we can learn from him, so we also can engage in the right fights and not the wrong ones. Now, the story of David and Goliath takes place in the Valley of Elah, and it's still in existence today. So if you went to Israel, you could go and you could visit this site. It's a popular place to go if you're over there and see this historical site. And what we know is on one side of the valley, Saul and the Israelites were camped out. And this was like their safe zone. So there were tents, there was fires, they had food and supplies, and it honestly was pretty comfortable in their camp. And on the other side of the valley,

there was Goliath and the Philistines, and that army was camped out. And so each army was to put forth one representative and whoever won the battle between the two of them won it for their nation. And so the Philistines had a pretty obvious choice. They decided to send Goliath because Goliath was a giant. Now, whenever I read the Bible, I want to encourage you to do this as well. Live in the story. Pause, read about the surroundings. Okay, so there was two mountains, one valley, says that Goliath was a giant. Picture what it was like. Let the story come to life, because we think in stories. And so to help make this story more visual for us, I want to invite up my amazing friend who's part of our City First Leadership College, Demonte. Give it up for Demonte. Let's go, Demonte. Now, Demonte is amazing. He is a huge part of our youth ministry here, amazing student in our leadership college. We love Demonte so much. And he's also the tallest, you're the tallest person that I know. Okay, so I'm about 5'4", maybe 5'5", with a little like vertical assistance today. So Demonte, how tall are you?

Well, I'm about 6'6", or 6'7". 6'7"! Of course you are 6'7", of course you are. Okay, of course. So Goliath in the Bible, it says that he was nine feet, nine inches tall. So you probably don't often feel like you're short, but compared to Goliath, you would be short. He's like three feet taller than what Demonte is. So I just want you to take in that visual. Now, David, when at this point in the story was a shepherd boy, he was 15 years old. So he couldn't be much taller than I am, and he's facing Goliath, who is nine feet, nine inches. Okay, you can give it up for Demonte. Thank you for being a part of that. And he was so strong that Goliath, it says that he had two spears and these spears were 125 pounds each that he could just throw like it was nothing. So when we read about that for 40 days, Goliath would come into this valley and he would taunt the Israelite army. And we read that the Israelite army was so scared. It says that they were shook with fear. They were terrified. They ran in the opposite direction. You can understand why because of the size of Goliath. And so all of the Israel army was too afraid to fight them. They thought, I'm more comfortable camped out over here

and I'm not gonna go up against Goliath. But now we have David who's 15 years old. He's not in the army because he's a shepherd boy, but he's got three brothers in the army. And so his dad says to David, I want you to go to the campsite. I want you to check on your brothers and I want you to bring them some supplies. The Bible specifically says, his dad told him to bring bread and cheese. I love the Bible. I love bread and cheese. So David is like a pizza delivery boy going to see his brothers, bringing the pizza to the campsite. And he gets there and he sees that everybody's afraid. And it says that he saw Goliath and he heard Goliath defiling God. But instead of David running away in fear, he began to ask some questions, looking for some context about who this giant is. So this is where we pick up in verse 25. It says, David asked the soldier standing nearby, what will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel? Who is this pagan Philistine anyway that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God? I love this kid. Then somebody answers him, the king has offered a huge reward to anyone who kills him.

He will give that man one of his daughters for a wife. So now he'll be royalty and the man's entire family will be exempted from paying taxes. Now, David must've been from Illinois because he was like, fight Goliath or no taxes? Goliath is looking pretty good right now. So he's feeling like I gotta do this. I can be royalty, no more taxes. And this giant's tearing down our God. So now his brother, Eliab, here's what's going on. It's kind of eavesdropping. And Eliab, his oldest brother heard him and he spoke to the men and Eliab's anger burned against David. Now, why did his brother's anger burn against David? I think he was angry and jealous because the chapter prior in 1 Samuel 16, we see a prophet comes looking to anoint the next king of Israel. He looks over Eliab. He looks over all of David's brothers, but then he finds David, the shepherd boy, and he is anointed as king of Israel. So he's anointed, but not appointed. So he's still just being faithful, tending to his sheep. But his brother knows that God has something special for David.

And so he's angry and he's jealous. And he says to him, why is it that you've come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep? He's throwing insults in the wilderness. I myself know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart, for you have come down in order to see the battle. But David said, what have I done now? Was it not just a question? I don't want you to miss these four words. Then he turned away. Can everybody say it? Then he turned away. Then David turned away. So here's David. He sees the giant, but his brother's trying to rope him into a petty fight. And there's a famous quote that says a man who's at war with himself will inevitably be at war with others. So David's brother probably is unhappy and now he's trying to get to David. And so now David has this choice. Do I give in to my brother who's trying to fight me about this petty fight, insulting me and the amount of sheep that I have? But David turns away from the wrong fight because he knew that he could not spend his energy, his effort and his anointing on the wrong fight.

David knew that his time was too valuable. His calling was too precious. His mission too important to waste it on the wrong fights. And I wanna say the same is true for you and for me. Your time is too valuable. Your calling is too precious. Your mission is too important to waste your one and only life fighting the petty fights. We have to know that there's a bigger picture at play. We have to have a greater perspective of what God is wanting to do on this earth and how God works is through people. And if we don't understand the bigger picture, we give in to the small petty things. Petty will always be easier than purposeful. but you are called to live a purposeful life. The world needs you to live on purpose. And so David knew, I can't give into the fight with my brother, no. He knew that Goliath must fall. In that moment, his brother was a critic, but I believe David's going, my assignment is not the critic. My assignment is the Goliath that must fall. And what I know about you and what I know about me is that we all have some Goliath in our life that must fall, opposition that is real. Things that seem big and scary and makes you wanna run away in the opposite direction. And we also know that we do have a very real enemy.

John 10, 10 talks about this, that the thief comes in only in order to steal, to kill and to destroy. He wants us to put all of our energy focusing on everything else so that we won't focus on the right things. He doesn't even want us to remember that he exists. He wants us so distracted, fighting all the wrong fights. And I wanna take a moment and I wanna speak to the Christ followers in the room. Now, if you're here and you're just checking out City First and a friend brought you, we're so glad you're here. You're in the right place. This is a place where you can belong before you even believe. But if you're a Christ follower, I want you to know that the enemy wants to keep us distracted from the real fight. And how does he do that? By having brothers fight against brothers and sisters fight against sisters. See, God is doing something special on the earth right now. And if the enemy can't stop the movement of God that is sweeping across the nation, he will try to divide it. How does he divide it? By having brothers fight against brothers and sisters in Christ fight against sisters. And he's been using the same tactic for as long as time. You know, a couple of weeks ago,

I started rereading a book. It's an old book from C.S. Lewis, who's a great theologian. He's a British theologian, great author. And he wrote a book that was released in 1942. He wrote it in like 1941, released in 1942. And if you remember the context of that era in Europe, which is where he lived, that is when Nazis were invading Europe. And so during this war and during this invasion, when everyone's opinionated and there's lots going on, he writes this book and it's a fictional book from the perspective of the devil giving instruction to his minions and how to keep people, especially Christ followers, distracted and frustrated and avoiding the real fight. And I wanna read just a little excerpt for you from the screw tape letters. Now remember, 1942, he wrote this. Before there was internet, before there was social media and the comment section, before there was color TV and 24 hour news. And this is what he said. Be sure that the patient, meaning us, remains completely fixated on politics. Arguments, political gossip, and obsessing on the faults of people they have never met serves as an excellent distraction from advancing in personal virtue, character, and the things that the patient can control.

Make sure to keep the patient in a constant state of angst, frustration, and general disdain towards the rest of the human race in order to avoid any kind of charity or inner peace from further developing. Ensure the patient continues to believe that the problem is out there in the broken system rather than recognizing that there is a problem within himself. Powerful. I read that a few weeks ago. I was like, I gotta share this. The timing of it. And I want you to hear me very clearly. Politics are important. And as Christ followers, we should be involved and we should care and we should be praying for our nation. But we cannot stand divided as a church over preferences when we should be united over priorities like reaching the lost for Jesus Christ and spreading the good news of the gospel to anyone and everyone that would listen. Church, we are not trying to win arguments. We're trying to win lost people to Jesus. We have a fight to fight and the enemy wants us to be distracted fighting the wrong fight. See, David couldn't control his brother, but he could control what fight he chose to engage in. And he knew the right fight was to take down the giant.

And that's how he saw a true victory. So the second thing that we can learn about the cost of victory, yes, fight the right fight. The second thing is victory requires training. I remember a while back, I had the terrible idea to run a half marathon. And so I got my friends and we bought our tickets. We're like, we're locked in. And then I was like, wow, this is a lot of running. Like, why was I surprised? But the training to run a half marathon was. So exhaustive. And I put in the work, and I put in the work, and I ran, and I ran, and I ran. And I was able to accomplish the victory of running a half marathon. But I never would have been able to do that without putting in the cost of training. And see, David was trying to convince King Saul to let him fight Goliath. He sees it. He's like, I don't want to pay taxes. I want to take down this giant. And he's like, let me do it. And Saul's going, you're just a kid. You're not experienced. You can't do it. But David's going, no, I can, because for so much time I've spent in the field defending my sheep. And God was with me then, and he will be with me now.

And this is what he says. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of the Philistine. Saul said to David, go and the Lord be with you. See, most of David's life, he was out in a field, which was pretty common. And he spent most of his day stewarding what had been entrusted to him, the assignment of caring for his father's sheep. And we read that David was a man after God's own heart. So while he's out there being faithful, he's worshiping God. Praise is on his lips. He's taken serious the assignment that God has given him. So he's practicing the accuracy of his slingshot and stone, because when bears came or lions came to try to steal the sheep, he was fighting them off. He was used to putting in the work off the field so that when the time came to face the giant on the field, he was prepared. There was preparation. And back to our 1980 US Olympic hockey team, we're gonna pick back up in their story where they're playing an exhibition game and they're distracted, they're not focused, and they end up tying.

And they're happy with their mediocre result, but you know who's not happy? The coach. Let's go ahead and check this out. After the team fails greatly at an important game, distracted and unfocused, Herb says to the team, you guys don't wanna work during the game? No problem, we'll work now. He gets them on the goal line and runs drills as people exit the arena. He continues to push, having them repeat the drill over and over. The team is exhausted and Craig, the assistant coach, urges Herb to let them rest. Herb challenges them, saying, you think you can win on talent alone, gentlemen? You don't have enough talent to win on talent alone. Drill after drill, they continue. Herb pauses to say, when you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a lot more important than the name on the back. The arena has cleared and the lights turn off. And yet, Herb continues to push the team. Herb says, this cannot be a team of common men because common men go nowhere. Finally, before they can run again, one of the teammates breathlessly shouts, Mike Arizona, Winthrop, Massachusetts. And Herb says, who do you play for?

Mike answers, I play for the United States of America. At that moment, Herb dismisses the team. That's all, gentlemen. Incredible, you can't have a victory without putting in the proper training. And we have to acknowledge that there's a spiritual battle going on and spiritual battles require spiritual weapons. So that's why as Christ followers, we do the things that are gonna help us run the race that the Bible talks about. We're gonna pick up our Bible and we're gonna read it again. We're gonna take time and we're gonna be focused in prayer again. We're gonna go and we're gonna invite our neighbors to church again. We're gonna go and we're gonna forgive that person even though they offended us again. We're gonna show up and we're gonna serve again. We're gonna show up and we're gonna go to church again. When you don't feel like it, we're reading the Bible again. When you don't feel like it, you're worshiping God again and again and again and again. See, when David went to go and fight Goliath, Saul tried to give him all of this equipment, heavy armor, heavy spears and swords. And David said, I don't need any of that. I'm gonna do what I've done again. And he says, all I need is my shepherd's bag

and a slingshot and a stone. And when you read in 1 Samuel 17, which I pray you'll go and read this story this week. It's incredible. And just sit in the story and let God speak to you. But whenever they're talking about David, he always has his shepherd's bag with him. He like made the man bag cool before it was cool, okay? And what did a shepherd bag have in it? It had all the tools that he needed to fight off the opposition that came his way. Because whenever he was out doing his assignment, which we all have assignments from God, he was out doing his assignment in the field. If a lion or tiger or bear or my came his way, he said, I have what I need to take down the opposition that's in front of me. And he would spend his time with a slingshot and a stone, just shooting that and making sure that his shot was accurate. And we read that it was time for him to go up Goliath. All he had was a shepherd's bag and he had a slingshot and a stone. He had what he needed for the fight in front of him. And if we were going to have a metaphorical shepherd's bag to fight the spiritual fights that are in front of us, would it be full of the right tools? See, for David, when he went, it says he picked up five stones from the stream. In order to do that,

I believe he had to get down on his knees to select those five stones. Not only was he filling up his shepherd's bag with the physical tools that he needed, but I believe that he was going, this is also a spiritual battle. So he picked up five stones. Why? Because he was afraid he wouldn't have a good shot and take down Goliath. No, he's done it before. He had a good shot. He knew God was with him. I think he picked up five stones because in 2 Samuel, it said that Goliath had four brothers, four more giants. So I believe that David went and he took the stone and he was thinking to himself, I'm going to take down Goliath with the first stone. And after I take down this giant, there's probably going to be another giant. So I'm going to take down that giant. And then after that giant comes, I'm going to do it again. I'm going to take down that giant. And then you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to take down that giant and that giant. He was prepared for the opposition that was coming his way. Why are we surprised and caught off guard when the enemy is doing his thing? As Christ followers, we should have our shepherd bag

and we're prayed up and we're full of faith. And we have a different perspective. And we know the enemy is going to come at me, but God already has the victory. David's not the hero of the story. God is the hero of this story. And when you are equipped with the right tools to fight the right fight, someone comes at you and Karen's being petty. I'm sorry if your name's Karen, I love you, but they're being petty. You're able to just be like, I'm going to turn away. Or you get home and everyone's had a long day, your roommate, your spouse, your kids. And instead, maybe they're being short with you. And before you would have been reactive. But when you've got the tools that you need and you realize I'm not going to engage in the wrong fight, you might just have words that bring soothing, healing words to their spirit and their soul. Because you've got what you need. When you feel anxious or you're frustrated, instead of just numbing out, you go, no, I've got what I need. I'm going to be prayed up. I'm going to turn to the word of God. The last thing that we see in the cost of victory is that David partnered with God in faith. What I love about David is all throughout the story, when you read it, his focus was not on the size

of the giant, his focus was on the size of our God. All throughout scripture, he's just saying, this giant's defying God. This giant's trying to come against the living God, the armies of Israel. He just is always talking about God, talking about God. And the Bible says that we're to magnify the Lord. Do you know what happens when you magnify something? It gets bigger. So if you're saying I'm going to magnify the social media comment section, it's going to get bigger in your head, in your heart. You're going to be having conversations with people you've never met in your head while you're driving down the road, being like, I want to tell them this, right? It gets bigger. But when you magnify God and you magnify the word of God, you know what happens? God gets bigger and the problems seem smaller and the wrong fights don't deserve your attention anymore. And we learned that David magnified God and it finally came time for him to fight Goliath, the right fight. And it says that Goliath is cursing God and he's cursing David. And I want you to hear the words that David spoke. David said to him, you come to me using a sword and two spears, but I come to you in the name of the Lord, all powerful,

the God of the armies of Israel. You have spoken against him and today the Lord will hand you over to me. I will kill you and cut off your head. Today I'll feed the bodies of the Philistine soldiers to the birds of the air and the wild animals. Then all the world will know that there is a God in Israel. Everyone gathered here will know the Lord does not need swords. The Lord does not need spears to save people. The battle belongs to him and he will hand you over to us. As Goliath came near to attack him, David ran quickly to meet him. He took a stone from his bag. He put it in the sling and he slung it. The stone hit the Philistine and went deep into his forehead and Goliath fell face down on the ground. Come on somebody, the battle belongs to him. So the Lord, I wanna invite you if you're able to stand on your feet as we wrap up our time together. You know, some of you are facing battles right now. You've been praying for a victory. And as you've been facing the battle, maybe your mindset and your eyes have been focused on the wrong thing. You've been looking at the size of the giant in your marriage. You've been looking at the size of the giant in your career. You've been looking at the size of the giant in that relationship with your child.

And it's time to shift your perspective and put your eyes on the largeness of our God. And I love that when David went to go meet Goliath, it didn't say he did it with trepidation and fear. No, it said that he ran quickly. And I believe for some of you in the room today, there is a run quickly that needs to happen, running away from the wrong thing that you've been giving into. That addiction, that mindset, that gossip, whatever it is, run away quickly from that and run quickly towards God. And here's the good news. You don't do this in your own strength. You don't do this in your own might, but by the power of Jesus Christ. And so if we wanna have a victory, there's a cost to the victory, right? We've gotta put in the work to be trained. We gotta stop fighting the right fights and we have to partner with God. And as we do that, he will not fail us. So with every head bowed and every eye closed, if you're in this place and you say, you know what, I'm facing a battle right now. I have a victory that's going on or I've been trying to do it in my own strength or I've been given into the petty fights. Pastor Lisa, would you just pray for me? Would you just lift a hand in the air?

See hands up all over this room. Heavenly Father, I thank you for every person in this place that you've brought them here to every location. And God, I pray that as a church, our focus would be on you. God, I pray that we would stop engaging in the petty fights and instead we would be purposeful with the one and only life that we have. God, instead of looking at the size of the problem, I pray that we would begin to see the size of you, that you are all powerful, you have all authority, there's nothing impossible for you. For the one who needs a miracle, God, I pray that you would do it. For the one who needs a breakthrough, God, we thank you, it's not too big for you. God, we're gonna praise your name and lift your name up high in the middle of the battle because you are worthy to be praised. We thank you, God, that you go before us and this battle belongs to you. Now, with every head bowed and eye closed, if you've never made Jesus a leader of your life, we talked about how we don't fight for victory but from victory because of what Jesus did on the cross. If you've never made the decision to follow Jesus and have your home forever in heaven one day, and you wanna make that decision to make him the leader and forgiver of your life, would you just go ahead and slip up your hand,

no one else looking except for me, hands up all over this place. We're gonna wait another moment. Best decision you'll ever make, you're saying, I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me forgives my sins and gives me a fresh start. If everybody would repeat this prayer so no one's saying it alone. Heavenly Father, thank you for your son, Jesus, that he died on the cross for me. He gives me a fresh start and forgives my sins. Today, I choose to follow you. And in your name, everybody said, amen. Can we give God praise? For the power of God. Incredible message from Pastor Lisa and a very powerful one at that. And if you did just choose to make that decision to have Jesus become the leader and the forgiver in your life, then we just wanna give you a few next steps for you to do.
