At Some Point You Have to Go - Andrew Gard

We are so excited that you guys are tuning in with us because it is Pray First Sunday. We love Pray First Sunday because it is the first Sunday of every month where we have the opportunity to pray over your needs. Yes. And so we believe here at Journey that prayer is a first response and not a last resort. And because of that, we want to pray for you. And so the way that you can do this is by submitting your prayer requests in the chat or just sharing with us what God has been doing in your life so that we can praise him together. Well, if we have not had the privilege and honor of meeting, my name is Gianna and I get to serve here as the Journey College Director and the Online Coordinator. Yes. And what's up, y'all? My name is Raelle. I have the honor and privilege of serving as an online host here as well. And I am JD. I have the honor of serving on the online team alongside... Kyla. Hey, guys. What's up? Welcome in. We're so excited to be here today. That's right, you guys. Well, as you guys can see, if you're with us in February, our set has completely changed and it is because we are in a new month. Yes. But our vision for the year has not changed. And that vision is follow me. And so if you were with us in February for our Love, Sex, and Marriage series, we were talking about what is following Jesus look like in relationships.

And I want to touch on that a little bit online. We want to hear from you. What did you get from that sermon series and what has it shown about the way you need to follow him? Yeah. Yeah. I would say for me, last week, they touched on it a little bit. But keeping God the foundation, no matter what season of life you're in, married, single, dating. The foundation allows you to put him first in a way that you can't put first. You can't follow what you don't put first. That's right. And so that's one thing that I've been implementing in just my daily life with my everyday relationships. Yeah. That's really good. I love the fact that Pastor Liz and Pastor JJ spoke last week together and they emphasize loving on God first, seeking God first, so you can pour out into each other. And we could actually use that not only with our marriages, but also our relationships and also with our friends. Yeah. Take advantage of it. Yeah. I second and echo what you both said, because in a season like this, I was intentional with taking those gems from each message and saying, hey, in my single season, how can I steward this in my family life, in my friend's life, putting God first leads to overflow in those other areas. That's so good. Yeah. I think it's just highlighting, since we started this year, is like, what is your source? Yeah.

Like, is it your career? Is it your friendships? Is it your relationships? And if it's not Jesus, then you need to fixate on him. You need to make him the center of your affection, because anything outside of him, it's just is not going to fill what you need. Period. It's not going to fill the void. It's not going to take away the weight, the pressure. And we try so many times to put supplements or substitutions on him, and it's like, no, the more you get to know the God that you serve, the more you get to know about his character, his attributes, you just find such a beauty that he is your father, that he is your refuge, your defender, your strong tower, but you have to be aware of that. And so, something practical that I would love to share with online is like, how can we be aware, more intentional about getting to know our father, getting to know God? That's good. I feel like even learning his heart for his children is a great first step as well, because at that point, we can understand how much God loves you, and in that way, we can now carry it over to our other relationships in our life, where we can say, God loves me like this, so I'm going to choose to love like Jesus would. Come on. Yeah, that's good. I think that can reframe our whole thinking. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. I think that's so important with God, just being intentional about your prayer time and just seeking God without worshiping in your car, spending that worship time at home. When you're in the presence of God, you just want that to pour out of you to others. Yeah.

And I think that reflects on whether you go to the supermarket, whether you're spending time with family, because you just want people to see and know how good God is through your life. Yeah. That's so good. Yeah. Thinking about everything that God is to us and for us reminds me of the conversation we were having earlier about the names of God, and I was reflecting on how in this season of following Jesus, I have been dwelling on his name, El Roy, meaning the God who sees me. Yeah. Because I'm in a season, and I don't know if y'all can relate, Chat, where it's quiet, you know, nothing crazy is going on. It's very still, very unseen, but God is right there with me, and I just want to encourage you to remember that God sees you in everything. Every season is just as intentional as the next, and yeah, lean into it. You can be intentional. Yeah. That's so important, talking about the names of God, because another name of him is Jehovah Shama, which means that the Lord is here. That's so good. And I think that that's like, when you just get to know the Father, it's like, man, not only are you watching me, not only do you see my situation, you see my circumstance, but you're watching me. with me in it, yeah. Yeah. And then the more we get to know, it's like, not only are you with me in it, but you've gone before me, because you're sovereign, because you're omnipresent.

And it just makes you want to spend time with him, not to gain anything, but just to really, because you're so in love with the God that you serve, that the God of the universe chose us to spend time with you. Like, wow, how grateful and privileged are we as children? And I think that's something so tangible, right? Because at the end of the day, we know his track record. We can look back and know that he's been with you all of the days of your life. He's known what you've gone through, and he's brought you through it. And it might not be the way you wanted it. It might not be the way you expected it, but it was in the way that you needed that form of person you are today. And I think that's one of the best things that we can use to motivate us to say, I want to follow Jesus. Correct, yeah. Following me right now, the season I'm in, is not necessarily a great season, but I was just knowing and trusting God that I continue to follow him, the God who's been with me every day, every year, and knowing that he brought me from before, he's gonna take care of again. Yeah, so good.

That's so, so good. And I love that we're talking about this thing of like, hey, even if I don't understand, even if I don't know where we're going, I think there's so much freedom in that online. And so if you're in a season like we're talking about where you don't know, just trust God and watch him show up. But JD, do you mind leading us into prayer as we go into worship? Of course, my honor. Father God, we come before you. We thank you for every viewer watching, whether on the Pando app, whether on their TV or their phone at work. Jason told us that he walked through a season or what felt like a lifetime of deep pain and frustration where he was taken advantage of by a lot of family members. He had a father who was struggling with alcoholism and he grew up just feeling a lot of pain and confusion and hurt. And in that time, he didn't understand how to lay those things at the feet of Jesus in a healthy way. And so JD, tell us a little bit more about Jason's story.

Yeah, late last spring, God just intervened and just shook his world upside down. A friend actually encouraged him to join a step into us. Freedom Small Group, he read Journey, Church, and he said it felt uncomfortable at first, but opening old wounds often does. But he said that he felt something amazing, something powerful that happened. He experienced prayer, brotherhood, he experienced healing in the awesome presence of Jesus. And he said what things that were buried for years finally came into the light. Yeah, what I love about Jason's story is that it's so real in the sense that he said it was little by little his deliverance. He felt God breaking those chains off of him, and he found the power through Jesus to forgive. And things that were, like you said, being uncovered and revealed were now being healed because he was bringing it up in a safe space, and that all happened because of God. And I just love that he found real freedom, little by little. That just sticks with me in his story. What a word of encouragement, too, that it's a daily surrender to find freedom, and we have to make that decision. And so thank you, Jason, for sharing your story with us. So what that means here as a church is that we know that prayer is our direct communication with the Lord. This is where we can ask Him for things that maybe we don't speak about out loud,

for the things that we have in our hearts that we just don't know how to talk about. If you're one of those people right now, I would love and encourage you to go ahead and write some of those prayer requests that we can pray together. Because when there's one or two of us together, the Lord is in the midst. So in that same heart posture, what we're about to do right now is pray over some of the prayer requests that we've gotten from our online community, from some of our online campuses, our Kissimmee campus, our Fern campus, our East campus. And even for the people who haven't written their requests, we're gonna pray together. So if you feel comfortable, let's pray together. So Father God, thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, for allowing us to be in the house of the Lord today, for being in your home and coming into ours. God, we just wanna give you all the praise, all the honor. Right now, before we go over this request, we wanna just thank you, Jesus, for our life, for giving us breath into our lungs again today. God, you said every time that you wake us up, that means you have something else for us. You have something new for us, Father God. And I just pray right now that I decrease as you increase, Father,

as we speak over these prayer requests of your children and their needs, because only you know what they ultimately need. Father God, we are praying together today for protection of homes in the family, praying for protection over the people that know you, Jesus, but they need you more right now than ever. They need you in every single piece and every single crevice of their home. Father God, I'm asking you to encounter them right now in the name of Jesus, to let your spirit dwell in their home, to let your spirit dwell in their hearts so that that protection will remind them that you've been with them ever since they were born, Father God, whether they're an adult, whether they're a child, whether they're in the womb, Jesus, that you've been with us every step of the way. Father God, we are praying together right now for the people who are needing supernatural healing, people who need healing over their bodies because they might not be functioning in the way that you intended them to be. But God, you here today are reminding us that you are doing something in their bodies so that when you heal them, Jesus, that only they can call on your name as the reason that they were healed. Father God, we are praying for provision right now

for people who are right now struggling to pay their bills, praying that you can come through with a miracle, Jesus. Lord, we know that you are a God of miracles and you haven't stopped doing miracles, and we believe today that you will also do a miracles for the people who need you most, for the people who need help paying their bills, for the people who need help paying their rent, for the people who help me paying their car bill, anything that they need that they are lacking, Lord, I just ask you to replenish them right now in the name of Jesus. Lord, we are praying for marriages, Father God, for the marriages who are on the brink of a divorce, but we right now, all together, coming in agreement that we rebuke the name of divorce in the name of Jesus, that divorce does not live near us when you are in the realm, that divorce has no way of coming over anybody. That has a unity in you that you gave them the covenant that you gave them That ordained them to begin with and you gave them each other to begin with Lord Allow them to have a new spirit Allow them to have a new heart Allow them to have a new perspective and to give them a new new way of looking at their marriage in Jesus name Father God, we are praying for our military right now. Keep them Keep them safe Jesus. Keep them. Keep them looking at your face. Keep them seeking you Jesus Keeping them calling on your name so that you will provide and that you will be with them and you will fight with them and That you will cover them father God Lord, we are also praying for the spirit of addiction to be rebuked in the name of Jesus to be cast back down to where It came from that addiction has no realm and no no room in anybody's heart because you are going to fill their heart because you're gonna fill them with that new spirit that they that the spirit of

Addiction has no No control over them because you are in control father God That the spirit of depression has no room in their hearts father God and for the people who don't know how to pray to you God We want to go ahead and pray for them right now God give them a new way a new mind a new spirit of knowing that you are on their hearts and that you love them and That you care for them and that you want them back and come on home Lord, we believe that no when we even know if we walk through the valley of the ballot But even though we've walked through the valley of the shadow of the death We will fear no evil Jesus because you are in control and we decree and declare that all these things will be sun in Jesus name Alright guys. Thank you so much and let's prepare our hearts for the Word of God I don't know about you But this weekend this week the world has been loud And there's been fear and confusion But I'm reminded when I listen to this song reminded of a scripture Reminds me of who I put my faith in This God does not give us Spirit of fear Did you know that God does not give us the spirit of fear but a power love and a sound mind So I want to tell you this when the world is loud heaven is steady When the world is loud, my God is louder When the world is loud when fear is loud, my my God is even louder Heaven is steady Have you met my king? Hey Jeff, I want to introduce you to somebody who's undefeated His name is Jesus, could you worship him right now? Could you say his name? His power in his name

Come on could you just lift your hands and worship God as we pray as we lay hands in this moment When we're praying for for things in our life when we're praying for for things that might be uncertain Could we just declare this? We just declare who you are His death could not hold you The veil tore before you We silence the bows of sin and gray Heavens are roaring Praise of your glory For you our ease to lie I forget And you have no rival And you have no equal Now and forever god you reign And yours is the kingdom Yours is the glory Yours is the name Above Come on declare who he is you have no rival You have no rival You have no equal Now and forever god you reign Yours is the kingdom Yours is the kingdom Yours is the glory Yours is the name Above Come on we sing all day all day came.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . So she sends her regards. Well, man, what an honor it is, again, to be here. And I'm excited to share what I wanna share today. You know, in the book of Hebrews, it says something interesting. It says that it's impossible to please God without faith.

Like, you can't do it. And it goes on to say that whoever would come to him, number one, you gotta believe that he exists. And then number two, you gotta believe that he rewards those who diligently seek him. And I don't know about you, I don't know how long you've been in church, but that is a shocking claim to me that says that it's impossible to please God without faith. Because honestly, sometimes I feel like it's impossible to please God without my great character. It's impossible to please God without my great conduct or my generosity or whatever. But the scriptures say, no, no, no, you can't please him without faith. I think the reason why it says that is because you cannot worship that which you don't know the nature of. And this is why good theology and good foundation and a good understanding of who God is and what his nature is is so important. Because sometimes we find ourselves approaching a God that is not the God of the scriptures, but is the God of our own making. And so we end up working hard in our own effort and in our own way to go, God, are you happy? God, are you happy? God, are you happy? And God's just going, no, no, just believe in my nature.

Believe that I'm for you and not against you. And I wanna read out of the passages today. I wanna read out of Genesis chapter 12. And I wanna read the story of a man called Abram who would later be known as Abraham. And it's his initial calling. It's his initial moment with God where he gets called out into the unknown. And in Genesis chapter 12, verse one, it reads like this. It says, now the Lord said to Abram, I want you to go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and him who dishonors you. I will curse and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram went as the Lord had told him and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son and all their possessions that they had gathered and the people that they had acquired in Haran and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. And when they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem to the Oak of Moreh. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said to your offspring, I will give this land. So he built there an altar to the Lord who had appeared to him. I wanna preach a message on faith today that I'm gonna call at some point, you just have to go. At some point, you have to go. Come on, let's pray together today over the preaching of God's word. Lord, we thank you so much for your word. We thank you that it is indeed a light unto our path. I'm grateful, God, that you correct, you rebuke, you encourage, you call out the things that are inside of us, Lord. And God, I pray that you would do that today as we submit ourself before your word. In Jesus' name that we all said, amen, amen. I believe this, I believe whether you're watching online or whether you're watching at another campus or here in the room, I believe we all share one addiction, at least one, but one I wanna speak of today. Believe we share an addiction. And I think it's the addiction that we all have to information. We are addicted to information. In fact, in my house, we cannot even get through a meal without yelling out, hey, Siri, a half a dozen times. Inevitably, we're gonna be sitting down having family conversations

and the kids are gonna ask us a question that we do not know the answer to and we're gonna yell out, hey, Siri, to get the answer. And Siri will download the information that she has into our dining room. In fact, many of us, before we are making big decisions, anybody in this room or anybody watching, you ever make a pros and cons list, right? And you sit down and you make a pros list and you make your cons list and we are addicted to information. And what we're really, really looking for is we are looking for that one bit of information that's gonna make us feel good about our decision. In fact, we pursue. information to one end. And that end is to eliminate uncertainty. We're doing everything we can to take all the things out of the equation. We're doing everything we can. In fact, we live currently today in the most informed generation that has ever lived. By a magnitude that would be incalculable. Like there would be no way to measure how much more informed you and I are than people that were living 100 years ago. My question today is pretty simple. How's that going for us? How's it working out? Because I've been pastoring people

for more than two decades now, and here's what I find ironic, is that although we are the most informed people that have ever walked the face of the earth, I have found that we are also probably the most uncertain generation. Like there are things that we are waffling over that our great great grandparents would not have waffled over. There is indecision that is striking down a generation. And I find it incredibly interesting that the two are running alongside of each other. So you would think that the more information that we would have, the better we would be at making decisions, but it's just not so. So maybe just maybe our pursuit of information is not gonna give us the certainty that we so deeply desire. So maybe there's another way, right? Maybe there's another thing that we should be pursuing. Maybe instead of God, I need more information, maybe the prayers that we should be praying is Lord, help my unbelief. God, stir up the gift of faith. See, what I have found is that this pursuit of information is an unending journey. Like my point, my main point today is this, is that certainty is a floor that we will spend our whole lives trying to touch. But faith is the disposition that I can trust God

even when I don't have the floor of certainty. See, if we're not careful, we will spend our whole life trying to find, again, that last bit of information that's gonna eliminate all uncertainty. Or we can spend our lives saying, Lord, I'm gonna trust you out into the deep. God, I wanna live as Peter lived, that even if I sink for a second, I'm gonna get a few steps on that water. God, I'm gonna step out into the things that you're calling me into. And this was Abram. This is where Abram found himself, is that he's called away from what was familiar into that which is unfamiliar. And so what I wanna do is I wanna look at his life and look at this story, and I wanna pull out kind of four things that I think could help you and I in his life. And here's the first one. Here's the first lesson from the faith of Abram, is that we need to go, and then God will show you. See, he is a go, and then I will show you kind of God. I love that it says, right, in Genesis 12, verse one, it says, now the Lord says to Abram, I want you to go from your country, your kindred, and your father's house. And he doesn't say to the land I'm now showing you. He says, I want you to go, you gotta go to the land that I will show you.

I'm not gonna show you, because isn't it interesting? The scriptures tell us, right, that we can't please God without faith. So why would he ever remove the thing that allows us to please him? Right, we're in pursuit of the very thing. God, give me certainty, give me a guarantee. And we're in pursuit of the very thing that keeps us dependent. We're in pursuit of the very thing that keeps us close to God, that keeps the ear of our spirit listening for heaven. And he's not gonna give you things that will harm you, he gives you things that will help you. So he says, I want you to go to the land that I will show you. Have you ever found yourself in a situation that you would expect to find yourself in at 12, but not as a grown adult? You ever find yourself in these situations? And a few years ago, I found myself in one of these situations where I had to get up on our roof at our house. And we had just had a hurricane come through, as is our custom in Central Florida in the fall, and there was some debris on our house, and it had been up there for a couple weeks, and I'm like, man, I gotta get this off. And so nobody was home on this particular day,

so I go out to the garage, I get the tallest ladder that we have, and I go to climb up on it to get on the roof. I discovered is, I pretty much had to step on the very top of the, nobody's home, no one's holding the ladder, and I had to step on the very top of the ladder to get kind of this far from the roof, and so I could put my hands on the roof and then jump and hoist myself up. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, you know? But that's what I did, and I hoist myself up, and every grown man is just like a 12-year-old, because I get up on the roof and I'm like, I'm on the roof, like I'm gonna hang out on the roof, and so I get the debris off in like three minutes and I'm just kind of hanging out, I can see stuff. Having a great time on the roof, and actually, after being up there about 15 minutes, my wife comes around the corner in her car and she sees me, she rolls down the window, and I'm like, she's like, what are you doing? I'm like, I got the debris down about 15 minutes ago, but I'm having a good time. I'm just kind of hanging out up there, and then after about 20 minutes, I'm like, okay, it's time to get down. And how many of you know, it's easier to go up than it is to come down? Because although I could stand on the very top of the ladder

and hoist myself up, I could not just jump on the top of the ladder, and so I go, oh, so I kind of get down and I start doing this. And I could not find the top of the ladder. And so then I get to the edge of the roof and I'm just sitting there like this. Because I can't, you know, I'm a grown man, I can't call like a fire truck. I'm like, I have to get down from this sucker. And at that time, my wife has since come out and she's recording this whole thing, by the way. She's recording me, and she still has this recording to this day, and you can hear me audibly looking at the ground going, this isn't that high. I can jump this, this isn't that high. And after like eight minutes of looking at the ground, I finally just go, okay, one, two, three, and I jump. And when I jump, on the video, all you can hear me is hit the ground and go, that's all you can hear. I thought to myself, what a great picture of what a lot of us are spending our life doing. What a lot of us are spending our life doing is doing everything we can to find certainty. And what has happened in our life is that, for example, there's probably some of you in this room and you've experienced an incredible heartbreak and an incredible breakup. Or maybe four years ago, you went through a nasty divorce. And what you've spent the last few years doing, maybe you're even in a dating relationship now.

Or maybe you haven't been in one. Because what you keep doing is you keep trying to find that moment where you say, how do I guarantee that heartbreak is never gonna happen to me again? And you're gonna be looking for it forever. Some of you, you come here, you just have started coming to Journey Church for like three or four weeks, and you have maybe some deep church hurt in your background. Or maybe you've been coming for six months, but you have kept the church at an arm's length. And you come and you enjoy the messages and you enjoy the music, but you're not getting in a group, you're not getting involved, you're darn sure not giving any money, because I used to do that and I got hurt. So how do I guarantee, I'm gonna wait until I can guarantee that I will not be disappointed by another Christian leader? And there's a lot of us in some area of our life that are on the edge of the roof. And you know that you know God's calling you out. And at some point, I'm here to lovingly tell you today, you're just gonna have to go. You're just gonna have to go. And until you come to the conclusion, and until you come to the conclusion and the awareness that heartbreak is a part of life. I hate to tell you, but it's just a part of life. And you can spend your. whole life trying to do everything you can to eliminate uncertainty, but you never will.

It's why some of you, you got a business in your heart that God has put there, but you tried it before 10 years ago and you failed. And so the whole time you've just been trying to, how do I make sure that doesn't happen again? Can I tell you, he is a go, and then I'll show you kind of God. It's just how he works. And what I wanna encourage you is what a shame it would be for you to live your whole life and live off the faith stories of others. I was talking to somebody recently and we were talking about preaching styles, right? We're talking about different preachers and they asked me, they were like, you know, I've noticed, I've listened to you a bunch, and he said this, he goes, I never really hear you use illustrations that aren't from your own personal life. That's what he said. He goes, literally, I'm either preaching the text or sharing a story. And he said, I've really not heard a lot of guys do that. And he goes, I've never heard you read some story from some missionary from the 1500s or something like that. And he goes, why is that? And I'd never had anybody ask me that before. So I paused and I thought about it, and my response was simple. I don't use other people's stories, not because I don't find them valuable or important,

and a lot of preachers do, and I think it's a very, very effective tool, but I said, I just use stories because I have my own. I've got my own faith stories. We got our own risks that we're taking. We got our own thing. Can I encourage you? Man, don't be the follower of Jesus in this room or watching. Do not be that follower of Jesus that just lives on the faith stories of others. God wants to give you your own stories. God wants to stir up some things in you. God's gonna call you to go back to school and get that degree and change courses, and it's gonna feel like a lot, but God's saying, no, no, no, I'll show you if you would just step out. The second thing that we can take from the life of Abram is this, is that the future God has for you will require faith, not just wisdom. The future God has for you will require faith, not just wisdom. And to be honest, this is a little hard for me because I am a wisdom guy. I am a, man, there is wisdom in the counselors of many. Get the data, make a sober decision, make a sound decision. I'm a big fan of that.

And so this is a little bit against my normal makeup. This is against my normal nature. But can I tell you, God wants to do things through your life, and there's gonna be maybe four or five critical moments that you cannot let wisdom drive the bus of your life. There has to be faith that's driving the bus in this thing. It's not that wisdom isn't in the passenger seat and not in the front row seat, but it's just faith has to be driving the bus, right? We read the Bible, right? Is the Bible just filled with everybody making really wise choices? No, Jesus comes to the disciples, and he's like, quit your job, let's go. The Bible's not filled with a bunch of people making good pros and cons lists, and just kind of going. The Bible's filled with people stepping out of the boat and walking on. The Bible's filled with people walking through the Red Sea. We have to allow faith to drive the bus, but sometimes it's hard to step out in faith because we only see ourself for who we are now, not for who we're gonna be then. So sometimes it's hard when God's calling you out to something, you see yourself right now and you're like, eh. Because I don't care what you project, in your heart of hearts, you know you're all right.

Right, we project, man, I'm gifted, I'm called, I'm anointed, but inside, we're like, eh, I'm just me. By the way, this was Abram's issue, right? God speaks to Abram, and think about this. What does he say to Abram? He's like, I'm gonna make you a nation. A whole nation, a whole people. I'm gonna, and Abram's like, can I get a kid first? Just one? Can I have a child? In fact, there are many times, if you read the narrative and the story of Abram, where God speaks this again and again and again, and Abram sometimes will reply, I don't have any kids. What do you mean? You see, you and I only see ourself for who we are now, not who we're going to be. Think about this for a second. By the time Abram gets to the end, he doesn't even have the same name. By the time Sarai gets to the end, she doesn't even have the same. Name, can I encourage you? You will not be the same person in 10 years. You will not, you don't gotta be that person yet. God will bring you along. That's why I get annoyed at the young guys in our church. I get really annoyed at the young guys in our church. We have a lot of young adults in our church,

just like this church, and so, man, there'll be young guys that'll talk to me and they'll say something like this. They'll go, I'll ask them. I say, hey, are you dating anybody? And they're like, nah. I'm like, okay, and I know that they're gainfully employed, 24-year-old, man of God. So I'm like, what are you doing? What are you waiting for? And they'll, man, if I had a dollar for every time I heard a young man say this, he'll say something to the effect of, man, I'm just, I'm working on me right now. Now, hear me. I understand that there are better times than others. I understand timing is important, but let me say this. I think a lot of times we are hiding behind wisdom because I will look at these young adult guys and I'll say, bro, let me just tell you something. You are gonna be working on you forever. You're gonna be working on you forever, but a lot of times, maybe because they grew up in a home with dysfunction, they only see themselves in a certain way. They don't see themselves as being equipped to lead a home. And so because of how they view themselves, it will hinder them from stepping into something. And so you and I gotta start getting the,

we have to start getting the eyes of the Lord. We gotta start praying prayers like this. Lord, help me to see me the way you see me. God, help me to step into the things, and I know I don't have to be there just yet, and I know I don't have to be everything that I'm gonna need to be in 10 years, but right now, God, if I need it, you've given it to me. I have everything that I need to be fruitful in my life right now. God, you've given it to me. We gotta be careful that prudence and wisdom is not the thing that's driving the bus, but I understand our default because I have the same default that you do. And I have this default, one, because I'm a father. In fact, a couple weeks ago, we are kind of in the home stretch of raising the money that we need for our building. We're moving into a new building in about four months or so, and we're out of our mind excited. And the whole thing is just insane. We've had to raise like $15 million over the last couple years. It's a $40 million overall project. It's just stupid. We are so out over our skis at Grace City Church, it's stupid. And we're about a million and a half away from,

as of a few weeks ago, we were a million and a half away from getting, at least being able to get in. We'll still need to raise more money to do all the little projects in the building, but to get in. And this couple met with us a few weeks ago, and they said, hey, we wanna give a $750,000 match so that the rest of the church can match 750, and let's finish this thing. It's like, those are good lunches. You know what I mean? Those are good lunches. It was awesome. So I bought lunch. I paid $80 and bought lunch. I'm like, you're good for 750, I'm good for 80. You know what I mean? Generous guy. And so we were talking about that meeting that night at our dinner table. And so our daughter Adriana says, oh, so people can still give towards the building? And I said, yeah, because she had given $20 last year during Heart for the House. I go, yeah. And so she goes, okay. And Adriana, she's our little church girl. Like, even if we're not at church,

she makes us drop her off so that she can serve in her two-year-old's class. Like, you know, she's got her girls that she's looking after. She's our little church girl. And so we finished dinner. Christina and I are cleaning up, and Adriana and Justice kind of go do their thing. And after we're done cleaning up, our daughter Addie, she says, hey, come over here. And what she did, she set up this little scavenger hunt. And so we're going on this scavenger hunt. She brought little clues on these little stickies. And we're going around, and as we're going around the house, we're picking up $1 and $5 and $10. And by the end, we pick up $42 from our seven-year-old. She's just smiling big. And she goes, it's like I'm giving $84 because of the match. That's awesome, right? It's faith being stirred up. But then I did something that I'm embarrassed to tell you that I did, because I got down on our level. And I said, Adriana, $42 for you is a lot of money. It's a lot of money. And you've been saving up birthday. Are you sure that you wanna give that for the building?

And she looked at me like I was crazy. She goes, yeah. and I'm a pastor, and I could not help myself but speak prudence into that situation. I couldn't help myself but to try to put wisdom in the driver's seat where faith was driving the vehicle in the heart of my daughter. And if you and I are not careful, God will speak to us and it will be God. It will not be us, it will be God. But the problem is you come to a church like this with incredible preaching week in and week out. And Pastor JJ is gonna be up on this stage and you guys are gonna go into a building campaign and we're gonna say, hey, we're gonna pay this whole thing off so that we are debt free and we're gonna be able to launch more campuses, we're gonna be able to do stuff. And when you're in this room or when you're watching at the campus, listen, God is gonna speak a number to you and it will be insane. It will be beyond you. It will be more generous than you have probably ever been in your entire life, why? Because faith will be driving the bus right here and then you're gonna get in your car. And then you're gonna get in the car. And where faith was leading the way here, prudence and wisdom will start leading the way in your car.

This is why you can come to church and Pastor JJ can preach on forgiveness. And when faith is stirring you, you start thinking things like, I need to call my mom and I need to have that conversation and I need to forgive. And then you will get in the car and one day will go by and two days will go by and then you will talk yourself out of the faith things that God was speaking to you in this room. You will not be able to do everything that God has called you to do with wisdom alone. At some point, you're gonna have to walk in faith. In fact, I remember when Pastor JJ called me about this building a few years ago. He called me about this building and he was going, man, we got an opportunity to jump into this building and it's big and it's gonna cost a lot and we're gonna have to renovate it and there's no guarantee. They said they're not gonna sell it to us. He literally was like, they said, no, they're not gonna sell it to us and we may get in here, put a bunch of money into it and then seven months, eight months later, they could kick us out. How the contract's written. And so he's like, what do you think I should do? And I just, on the phone, I said, bro, get in there. Just get in there.

He goes, are you sure? Because then he mentioned another friend of ours and he was like, man, he said this isn't a good idea. I'm like, okay, I'll be kind of the dumb one in the group. I go, get in there. I said, because here's what I know. You have no chance of buying it if you're not occupying it. You'll have no chance. But if you get in and then start exercising some faith muscles and people, listen, it was an unwise decision for Journey Church to get into this building and here we are. And here we are. So thank God you have leaders that are modeling this for you. Thank God that you're in an atmosphere that says, yeah, not every decision's gonna make sense on a spreadsheet. It's not all gonna make sense on a pros and cons list, but if God is in it, anything is possible. Here's the third lesson that we can take. Others are counting on your faith. Other people are counting on your faith. About a month ago, I was working at Starbucks and there was this young adult gal that was sitting about three seats down from me and she went to walk out of Starbucks and I was sitting there working. She comes up to me and she says, hey, here you go, good seeing you.

And it was a little note that she had folded up. So I grab it, put it in my pocket. And I had never seen her before. And she walks out and so when she walks out, I open it up and here's what the note said. I think the team has it right here. It said, thank you so much for following God's calling on your life, a girl who was lost. And then I was in Starbucks for the next 20 minutes. And because I do what I do for a living, people are very kind and people are very encouraging. And there's been a number of people that have used this phrase to me. And it always means a lot. People have come up to me and they'll use this phrase, thank you so much for your yes. Let's say that. Thank you so much for your yes. Thank you so much. I'm so glad that Gray City was planted 10 years ago. Thank you for your yes. And that's awesome and it's encouraging. But can I tell you this? Hear me when I say this and thank JJ and Liz for their yes. Thank the team here for their yes. But that is not a phrase reserved for clergy alone. That is not a phrase that is simply reserved for the pastorate. That is a phrase that is reserved for every faithful man and woman of God

that have decided all my gifts, all my resources, all my life, all my struggles, all of it, I lay down at the feet of Jesus and I say, Lord, breathe on this. And if you breathe on it, God, you can absolutely, there are more people counting on your yes than you could possibly fathom. Some of the people are gonna be obvious. Some of the people that you say, like, for example, your spouse is really counting on your faithful yes. Your kids are counting on your faithful yes, right? Some of it's gonna be obvious. Like, I love the scripture here because it says that God speaks to Abram and he says, hey, I'm gonna make you into a nation. He goes and talks to his wife and he's like, babe, we're gonna be a nation. She's like, okay, and they go. That's the obvious impact, right? Obviously, this impacts his wife. But to me, the Bible's one big comedy book. It's just how my brain works. And so when I read this story, I love it. It says, his wife went with him and so did Lot. So, like, his brother's son, his nephew. Like, Lot gets to go. Now, I don't know about your family. I don't know how it works in your household, but like, I have one nephew, his name's Lincoln.

I love my nephew. We golf together, he's 16, he's awesome. He lives in Washington State. Their family comes down and visits. I love my, I love my nephew. But you know, you know, I don't know how you feel about your nephew, but like, if I was starting a nation, like, he's not in my top five, you know what I mean? Like, I'm not like, let me call Lincoln, you know what I mean? Like, I love him, but like, you know, he gets his birthday present a week and a half late, you know what I mean? Like, I love him, but like, you have no idea how many random people that will be impacted by your faithful yes. You have no idea how many people in your workplace, how many people in your families, how many people, you have no idea. And listen, for me, it wasn't somebody in the pastorate. It was a 25 year old guy in finance named Ryan that when I was at this event at 17 years old, and they said, hey, raise your hand if you feel something like you never felt before. And my hand went up and they said, hey, come up here while people pray for you and you can accept Christ as your savior. It was not a pastor that tapped me on the shoulder and said, I'll take you up there if you want me to.

It was a 25 year old guy in finance that changed my life. Thank God for Ryan's yes. Some of you, you're waiting for, when I'm spiritual enough, I'll be able to be used by God. When I know enough about the Bible, I'll be able to be used by, no, no, no, we need your yes right now. We need your yes today. Last lesson we can take from the life of Abram is this, is that resistance will be a part of it. Resistance will be a part of it. Can I encourage you, don't fall into the oversimplification trap of following God, that if it's hard, it must not be God. That's a trap, that is not biblical. Not biblical. I love that God tells Abram something. This is very interesting. It says, Abram passed through the land, and it says, at that time, the Canaanites were in the land, and then the Lord appears to Abram and he says, to your offspring, I'm gonna give this land. Now, if I'm Abram, very confused here, very confused, because God's taking him on a journey, and then he sees the Canaanites in the land, and God's like, this is it, right here. Now, if I'm Abram, I'm confused, because I'm like, wait, this is our land, there's people here. Very confused.

But when you think about it, it's not confusing at all. It's not confusing at all. Of course there's people in the land, because the land is good. You wanna know why having a marriage sometimes can be so difficult? Because the land is good. You wanna know why there's resistance to you raising your children in a godly way? Because the land, the fruit of that land is good. You wanna know why starting that business or rising through the ranks in your career is so hard? Because the land is good on the other side. If you can just get to the other side. I tell you, here's another thing that's totally unbiblical that we buy into. God speaks through open doors. Not always. Not always. That is a lie that we've bought into. And so what we do is we live our life in such a way where we're on the journey, on the journey, on the journey, and we go, closed door must not be God. But my question is always, did you jiggle the handle? What if that thing was unlocked? And all you had to do was, did you check to see if you had the keys? Did you, I got the keys for that. God has equipped me for this.

Did you try a little kick? We gotta stop believing that if there's resistance, it must not be God. I have found that the steeper the hike, the greater the peak. That when God's really trying to do something, it's gonna come with some toil. It's gonna come with some work. It's gonna come with some pressing through. These last two years of Grace City Church has been really great momentum, and we're trying to do this crazy project on 50 acres, and it's insane. And some weeks we got good weeks, and some weeks we get bad news. But we're going somewhere. We're faith people. God's moving. Can I encourage you, sometimes you just gotta find a way to get through that door. Let God redirect you. Could you imagine if David showed up, and he's like, oh, this must not be the land that we're in here. There's a giant there. Everybody was afraid of Goliath. And yet David shows up, and he sees Goliath, and what does he say? He says, I've got through some closed doors before. He shows up, and he says, man, I killed the lion.

I killed the bear. God hasn't just used me when I was running downhill. In fact, you don't even share those stories. When you're talking about your testimony, when you're talking about what God's brought you through, you don't share the season where you're like, I was just running downhill. All the doors were open. You don't even share that part of your story. You share the part of the story where, no, no, no, we had to press in, and we had seven years of undiagnosed infertility, and God taught me how to pray in that season, and God taught me how to press in in that season. No, we went bankrupt in that season, and yet here we are 14 years later, blessed, and God is with us. No, I had major health issues, and I was depressed, and I was anxious, and God brought me through, and here I am. The only stories we share are when we got through closed doors. We're faith people. We're not just souped-up versions of ourself. We're faith people. He's a faith God. He's the God that brings down the mountains and lifts up the valley so that you and I can walk on level ground. He's the way maker.

It's who He is. We're faith people. Come on, let's stand to our feet, Journey Church. I'm gonna ask that we would bow our head, and I wanna ask a couple questions. First question is this. You're in this room right now, or you're watching out of campus, and if you and I were to go out and get lunch, and if I were to ask you, hey, is Jesus Christ the Lord of your life? If your answer is anything than an unequivocal yes, I believe this is why you're in church today. The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you'll be saved, that God wants to walk with you and not just give you eternal life someday when you die, but He wants to give you a new kind of life right now, and if that's you, when I count to three, I'm gonna ask that you would lock out your elbow and lift up your hand, and this would be just your confession of faith, saying, yeah, pastor, that's me, I want Jesus Christ to be the Lord of my life. That's you, ready, one, two, three. Go ahead and lift up your hand, wherever you're at, wherever you're at, yeah, that's me, that's me. Come on, let's give it up for all those making a decision. Man, I wanna follow Jesus, I wanna follow Jesus.

You can put your hands down. Second question is this. You're a Christian, you're following Jesus, but if you were honest, you've let fear grip you. You've let fear grip you in the area of finances, you've let fear grip you in the area of career choices, you've let fear grip you in the area of your relationships, and your church engagement, and your pursuit of Him, and you're saying, God did not give me a spirit of fear. Didn't give me a spirit of timidity. We're faith people and you're saying, man, God, help my unbelief. Come on, I want you to lift up your hand just as a confession, just to say, yep, that's me, and I wanna pray for us. God, I pray right now, faith would begin to rise up in our spirit. God, there's been some things that you've been calling us to, but God, we've explained it away with practical wisdom. God, we have explained away forgiving others. We have explained away being generous. God, we've explained away taking that career change step. God, we've explained your voice away. Forgive us, holy God. Forgive us of that. God, stir up the gift of faith. And God, for all those that made a decision to follow you, God, I pray that they would confess with their mouth, Jesus, you are Lord.

Forgive me of my sin. Start me on a new track. Fill me with your spirit. And let me walk with you in Jesus' name. And we all said, amen and amen. Come on, can we thank God for his faithfulness and his kindness? What a word. Wow, amen. What a word. And I think there's so much freedom in that because I feel like the way that we can be brought up or the way that society teaches us, it's like, hey, you have to have a plan. Like all these pieces need to line up, you know? Type that people rise up. And if they don't line up,

then you really need to think about your future and getting a home and you have kids and all of those things are beautiful. And also, do you trust God enough with it? That's all I was hearing.
