Ask a Pastor: Calling, Courage, and Wrong Prayers

Hey crew, it's Adam. I'm a husband, a father, a pastor, a follower of Jesus who, just like you, is trying to learn what it looks like to fully live and follow Jesus in the middle of real life. It is one thing to be someone on Sundays, but what about Monday through Saturday? And so here, we're gonna talk about faith and making a difference in the messy, ordinary moments where it's often the hardest to live out. Some weeks, I'll share what God is teaching me. Other weeks, I'll sit down with leaders, pastors, athletes, friends. There's no fluff, just encouragement and truth for your life between Sundays. I'm so glad you're here. Well, hey crew, welcome back to Life Between Sundays. It is Adam and Emily here at you, in these chairs, hanging out, having a blast, living our best life. We are so happy you're here. Summer is still here, which is a very good thing. We were talking the other day about how we're grieving that summer is going by so quickly. Yeah, but the people who drive me crazier is you get to August 9th and they're like, it's fall, it's fall time. That is not true. You have all the way until the end of the month. I might be one of those people. I don't like that.

It's still very much summer, at least until September 1st, I would say, is considered summer. That's probably true. If you're in the month of May, June, July, August, you're in summer. And you go to some stores and they already have all of their Halloween decor out. Oh yeah, it's ready, it's ready. I'm not with that energy. I don't really, I don't really go with that. There it is. Yeah, I'm a huge summer fan though. Same here. I need everything summer. I, even on the hottest days, I can't complain because all I do is complain all winter long. It's like the only thing that I'm super negative about is South Dakota winters. So all summer, I'm like, I'll just sweat. So when you get home, like after work, do you guys just sit outside? Yeah, what I, what we normally do is I've been going on walks lately. So I grab Senator, either Becky will come or one of the kids might come or it's just me and him. So I'll just throw him in the car literally today, as soon as I get home. Throw in Senator in the back, we'll drive downtown, we'll hop on the bike trails

and we'll just walk around downtown. So, and then when I get back, we just sit out front. We're outside 24 seven. I know. It's awesome. That is really nice. And I feel like your yard is so nice too. It's like just made perfectly for just chilling. Chilling, yeah. Chilling and people watching. Someone said, they're like, the bushes in your front yard are so tall. And I was like, yeah, that's very intentional. We're trying to create this oasis in our front yard. Just away from everyone else. There it is, it's awesome. Okay, you got some high low Buffalo for the week for us? Yeah, highs. I, this week specifically, older mentors in my life. Just I, just older mentors. And I feel like I'm so spoiled, but just, I just have a group of guys that are just so encouraging. So just people that I'll have a quick phone call with or like one of my friends, Chad, we just grabbed a coffee early yesterday morning. And sometimes when you connect with somebody, you're like, ah, is this beneficial? Like I could be working, could whatever. Those, like time with older mentors is so priceless.

Even when you're like, I don't know if anything came from that. You're getting wisdom. You're getting encouragement. Like I just am filled with faith. So older mentors is a huge thing. And then Buffalo, it's kind of a- That's your high? That's my high. Yeah, just, I only wish that I would have had more mentors in my life when I was younger. Because I've had like one or two here and there, but right now I'm just spoiled. And I feel like I'm relying on them so much right now, just for encouragement, for direction, guidance. Hey, what do you think God's saying this? Even Chad yesterday, he spoke into my prayer life and he's just like, do you pray like that? And he's like, there's no judgment, but he's like, you should have so much more confidence when you pray. And I was just really encouraged by him. So that would be my high. My Buffalo is a little bit of a throwback book. It's the book, Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. And you've maybe seen this. This was written like 25 years ago. I think Moses is on the front cover of it. Not the new one though. The new one is very much more artsy.

The new one is so much better. So this is a book that I have heard about for 25 years and I haven't read it until now. And what's kind of fun is my pastor and the pastor who had the idea for Embrace, he read this book and that was a large part of him deciding to pursue a new church in Sioux Falls, which is what ended up happening. So we'll put a link in the show notes for that book. I'm reading through it right now. I'm not done with it, but it's been so good. And so if you're like, gosh, I want to experience God. I want to be a part of something bigger than myself, read that book because it's been super, super helpful. I don't think I have any lows. No lows? No, I don't think I have any lows. Life's just good then, huh? Life is really, really, really, really good. That's good. Yeah, I really don't think I have any lows. Loves any of my lows are stress-induced and it's in it's because myself and now whatever you want to share these lows Do I too low sure the blister? I have my right foot and the blister. I have on my left foot Like the other day You got him from running and I was like, did you have a bad pair of shoes like what was wrong? Like were you like whatever and then like later in the conversation? I was like, I just didn't understand why you had these blisters Yeah But then you're like I ran how far 11 miles I've been wearing these shoes forever. Like this has not happened. So I feel like I don't know what was going on. But it's guys like like

Half dollar size blisters on the bottom of my foot and your friends were like and that's why we don't run Yes, they're like this is example a and B of why I will never run Honestly so valid because I've been taken down for the count for the past four days and I can't stop talking about it I bring it up. Have you tried running since yes on Monday night and went bad. My it was my finger bleeding. Oh my god Take it easy on those feet. Yeah, but other than that the week's been fantastic. That's great. We got a great episode coming We are gonna ask Adam some questions again, we put a question box on Adams Instagram It's Adam a Weber if anyone wants to follow along just on day-to-day life Posting kind of post a lot on your Instagram stories. I try to post encouragement and random pictures. No one knows what I was Making fun of him for all of his boomerangs that he always post. I like a good boomerang I like a good boomerang, but seriously go go follow me I think this was I glanced at them quickly this time This these are probably my favorite group of questions that we got. I thought those were really really good question Yeah, they were they were really good and they kind of have a range between all sorts of different things So let's hear them. Are you ready to get right into it? I'm ready to rock. Okay your first question How have you distinguished between God's calling in your own ambition, even if it is good? So this has been something that I've been trying to figure out and I think for me is gonna be a lifelong journey of Wrestling with and I think it is for most people like is this is this God call God's calling on my life Or is this my own ambition? And for me, it's it's I think oftentimes we want to say this is a hundred percent from God And this is a hundred percent evil. I think in a lot of times It's like there's a mix of like God and ambition a mix of like holy Maybe even wrong or sinful or selfish. I believe Henry Cloud talks about that like in most things It's not a hundred percent good a hundred percent bad. It's usually a mix of the two for me I need to constantly wrestle with that. So like as a pastor, you know God's calling I really believe God put me on earth to tell as many people as I can about Jesus like when I heard the good news About Jesus it was the greatest news I'd ever heard and I was almost like how has no one ever told me this since and I Genuinely think if I'm in a nursing home someday I'll be the old guy that goes from room to room just like striking up conversations with people to tell them about Jesus So that's that's a good thing. But then inside of me and this is just true

I'm an Enneagram three achiever who can be without without God without walking with Jesus can be very numbers driven Can be very goals driven in a selfish way goals are not bad numbers are not bad But so I think in me, I'm constantly needing to say is this for Jesus or is this for my own security? Is this for Jesus or for me with status and I need to constantly wrestle with it because it looks the same It's really based on my heart on a daily basis. And so I think for me, it's just asking God Lord What's my motive? Yeah, and is this from you or is this for me? Is this about you or is this about me? And for me, that's just a lifelong wrestling match but like maybe you're trying to figure out like what I would say is It'd be easy to say like being a banker. Oh, that's selfish and that's selfish ambition being a pastor. Oh, that's awesome That's totally holy from God. No, you can be just as it can be just as much a holy Calling Glorifying God as a banker than it can be a pastor Honestly as a banker when you share your faith, it's a lot more of like intentional with a pastor It's part of your job and it can oftentimes become really really empty So yeah, I think for me a long story long answer long. I think that constantly asking what's my motive? Lord, what is from you? What do you have for me? when is it about me and You know, maybe it's even having a close friend that you can just vent to I Tyler Goff's one of my best friends So I was on the phone with him last week just kind of venting and like this is just gross. But this This is just inside of me and it felt so good to share with somebody else and then have them challenge me and him be like, yeah, that's probably not from God. It's like, oh geez. So for me, it's a daily walk thing. And what would you say like the people who have no idea if they're like doing their calling on their life? Like, well, I think there's a lot of like, um, you know, my friend Brad talks about a calling and assignment and how different things can change. I think for me, it's where does your gifting match your passion point? And I think that's probably a lifelong journey. Like I'm kind of answering that question generally.

It's like, okay, I'm gifted at this and I'm passionate about this. And then I see God just continue to open doors for me with it. Okay. Well, I'm just going to keep on walking through the door. This experiencing God, how we started out, uh, you know, they asked the question, what's God's will for my life? And he said, maybe a better question is what is God's will? Like where is God at work? And then just joining them there, you know? So like, where do I see God moving in my life? Well, gosh, I, I got this side hustle and it just keeps taking off and I keep asking God to lead it and just doors keep opening. Well, that's pretty cool. Or like, you know, where's God at work in my life? Gosh, I started this Bible study at the, at my, you know, at work over, over noon and it just keeps growing and growing and growing. And now it's like turning into three groups and all this kind of thing. Like I think maybe it's just more than trying to figure out this like magic equation or like magic, like leading from God. It's just like, Lord, uh, I want to follow you today. And so give me eyes to see where you're at work and just help me to help me to pursue that. And if an opportunity comes up, help me to weigh it before you. And you know, just to like, is this from you? Is it not? I think that's, yeah, I'm kind of giving you a fluffy answer. No, that's good. That's good. That's good or not. No.

I like the asking, is this God's will? Cause it just kind of like takes you out of the picture too. It's like, Oh, it's really not about me. And I, this, I'm going to keep going back to experiencing God. Oftentimes we figure out like what's our spiritual gift and we're like, okay, God, where am I going to use this spiritual gift? And he's like, most of the people in the Bible weren't gifted in what God called them to do. Like Moses is like, I got it. I got a stutter issue. Like you can't use me. And God's like, yeah, I actually, I can. And I'm going to be your strength and I'm going to be your voice through this. And I just look at embrace. I never wanted to start a church. I didn't even want to be a pastor. And God just continued to open doors. And I was like, Oh my gosh, it literally felt like I just kept walking through a door and I was just like, I don't know what is happening, but I'm just going to keep doing this. So yeah, I'm still trying to figure that out. Yeah. Okay. Great. Great answer. This is a hard right turn. Okay. Hard right turn. Like really hard. Right. How many sacks did you have in your high school football career?

Oh jeez. Great question. I don't know how many I had in my career, but my senior year I had 11. I led the team in sacks my senior year. 11 sacks. 11 sacks. Let's go. So you played defense. I played defense. I played defense. I was offense and defense, a small town South Dakota, you got to play everything. But yeah, I played on the defense and I had 11 sacks my senior year. We were terrible. Our scene, my team's senior year, my junior year, I can't remember how many sacks I had. We should have, we should have won state that year, but we got beat in the first round by the Hamlin chargers. So I can't remember all of that. My team, the junior year was stacked. I'm like, how did we get beat the first round? So yikes. Shout out to Dustin Strandy. I'm looking at you. So. It's his fault? It is. He was the quarterback for the Hamlin chargers. Oh, you played against them. Son of a gun. Oh, I thought you meant he was on your team. Dustin's going to like this way too much, but gosh, we had a great team.

Oh, that's funny. Wow. I don't remember one thing from high school. Well, I do, but not that in depth like that. There it is. Okay. What is one thing you wish you would have done in your twenties that you did not do? That's a good one. I like this question. Um, what did I not, uh, not do? I think, I think take, uh, ownership of my own growth, like growth, leadership wise growth, pursuing goals, uh, growth surrounding myself with mentors in my twenties. I didn't think I knew everything, but I just didn't realize like, man, there's all these people around you that will give you wisdom, like reach out and grab coffee with them. And now, now I will, now I won't hesitate to reach out to anybody. Now I got to acknowledge this. I pastor a large church, a lot of, some people know who I am. So that unopens doors that I know I might not be able to get open if I don't have that. So I need to acknowledge that. Cause some people are like, of course, they're going to. I want to meet with you, Adam, like blah, blah, blah. But even as a 20 something people, 40 year olds, even want to pour into a 20 something. And so in your twenties and your thirties, it's a little bit different. It's like, Oh, you're no longer a kid anymore and whatever. So it can be harder to get those coffee appointments in your thirties and your twenties. People are like, man, this guy's a go getter. She's a go getter. I just wish I would have reached out to mentors and different, uh, older, like leaders in their forties, fifties and sixties and said, Hey, what do you see? Like, what should I be doing? What should I be learning?

I wish in my, my twenties, I would have grabbed coffee with someone like Chad and he would have been like, dude, you should pray with a lot more confidence, you know? And Chad would be, you know, he's a finance guy. He's a, not this pastor. He's never been to seminary. He'd say that he's a work in progress, but I wish I would have had coffee with Chad in my twenties. Cause he'd have been like, dude, you're talking to the God who created the heavens and the earth and you're praying to him like he can't do anything. So I think, I think that's what I would have done. I would have taken more ownership of my leadership and growing, uh, taking more ownership and pursuing goals. Like I'm just like, if I would have started goals like in my twenties, holy cat. And then I wish I would have surrounded myself with, with more godly men and women, um, who are further along in the journey. So that's what I would say. I like it. I like it. What's your favorite thing about ministry right now? Um, so right now we're in a season at the church where we're pursuing, um, this, some new things. And so I'm getting to see people be radically generous. Um, and it's really, really cool. And not just like people who have lots of money and they're in their sixties be radically generous. I'm talking people in their thirties being radically generous and their forties being radically generous. And that's just super inspiring. So when you just see people sacrificially give, it's really, really awesome. So I think that is something that's, that I'm really enjoying in ministry. And then I think another thing is seeing, this sounds weird, seeing the team I get to work with, seeing them, uh, take so many steps and grow in so many ways.

That's just been really cup filling for me too, of I'm not involved in most things anymore. And then you see like a team doing a project or a team working on this. And you're like, this is so cool to see other people thrive and flourish. And if I get to be a tiny part of helping that, that's been really cup filling for me too. So I think it's seeing other people do ministry and me just get to be like, that's cool. I'm glad I'm on their team. Oh yeah. I've had so many, like in the last few weeks, they're like, Hey, do you know about so-and-so and such and such happening at the church? And I'm like, I have not heard anything of it. I'm like, that's so cool. So I want to go to that church. Yeah. It's been really cool to say have those moments of like, I hadn't, I've not done anything with that. And it sounds really cool. Number our next one. Let's hear it. Number our next one. Can the Holy Spirit manifest itself in the same way as it did for the early apostles in Acts 2 through 5? Oh, so long answer short, yes. The Holy Spirit can move in that way. I'm grabbing a Bible here. You know, the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit is poured out and they're able to speak in tongues. Absolutely can still happen. I personally have never spoken in tongues, but I most definitely believe that people can speak in speak in tongues. Other things, there's the healing of the lame man in Acts chapter three. So I've never seen with my own eyes someone who was unable to walk and they were then able to walk. But also I just need to acknowledge I probably have never boldly prayed for that to happen. And I think there's other places in the world that are seeing that happen because they pray and they believe that that could actually happen. I think there's too much American inside of me that's like, get that guy to a hospital, like let a doctor heal him. Instead of like, no, I got the power of the Holy Spirit inside of me. I should pray for that guy to walk, maybe bring him to the hospital as well and have him talk to a doctor. Sure. That sounds like wisdom there, but like, I'm, I'm just not like, I'm not praying enough for people. Like, Lord, that guy who can't see, would you restore his sight? That person who can't walk, would you give them the ability to walk? I think a lot of times it's that we're not praying for that to happen. And then I think there's other things like, uh, the Holy Spirit being poured out in literally thousands of people coming to know Christ that can happen. Um, you know, in small ways, we're seeing that in, in, I would say even since Sioux Falls, you're seeing like people have a hunger for God, churches are growing, blah, blah, blah. And then there's places in Africa. Uh, I believe one of the largest churches in Africa, there's like hundreds of thousands and they, they gather for worship outside because there's not a building big enough for them. You know? So I think, I think that's happening for sure. And then just like the Holy Spirit speaking through Peter and like Peter, like, where's this even at? Like, uh, the whole, uh, Peter, I know Peter goes, uh, in Acts four, Peter goes and he prays, uh, and he's preaches and like thousands are added that can, that can happen. What even in the book of Acts though, the book of Acts, what I love is that, you know, Peter's arrested and put in prison and I'm reading through Acts right now too. And Paul is in prison and then he gets stoned and then he's, you know, he goes out and preaches so often. I just think we're, we're not seeing these things cause we're praying different prayers.

You know, in the book of Acts, you and I, as good Americans, we're praying like, Lord, would you, would you free me from being persecuted from Facebook posts? Would you free me? Gosh, they're trying to crucify me. Not literally. They're trying to crucify me on social media. Okay. Instead here, they're not praying. They're literally being stoned and killed. And what are they praying for? Not to be freed from Facebook posts or freed for their lives. I look at this title in Acts four, they're praying for boldness. I mean, like that's just where I think we're not seeing a move of God. Like we're seeing in Acts, not because the Holy Spirit's not still doing his thing, but because we're praying for, we're praying for safety on Facebook instead of like, no, I'm going to pray for courage and the face of being killed for my faith. Like, that's just a different sort of thing. And I think when God sees like this, the reading this morning, I didn't know what chapter I was in. They said like, I think it's Paul who sees the faith of a man. And he's like, uh, get up and walk. Uh, this is later on an ax because he's, it says he saw that he had the faith to be healed. And I saw that's, that's probably, I'm getting fired up. But it's, it's really true. Like, I just think so many of us, American Christians, I want to go deeper. Tell me what the Greek verb says. Hey, how about you go preach the gospel at the risk of losing your life? That sounds like deeper, you know, like a Greek verbs, not deep. And I want to go deeper and then I want to go like not tell anybody in my life about Jesus But yes, can the Holy Spirit still do his thing Heck, yeah, like are you and I expecting him to move like that? Maybe not. That's even like Chad even you with me yesterday Like he's like you pray like that Do you realize who you're talking to you're talking to like the one who set the stars in place? And so I just need to be reminded of that Thank you for all that I'm getting fired up. I was just convicted reading through acts this morning. I'm like Lord. I'm I'm way too safe I've been waiting for someone to ask this question. Actually. Yeah, that's what you're thinking this morning. I've been waiting for so yeah I will that question it was it was I was just getting more and more fired up and also more and more convicted Because I think I'm praying for protection from Facebook posts and that's you won't see that anywhere in the Bible instead in the face of death, they're praying for Courage, I'm like what? Lord, I'm following you like when is like my easy life gonna come

These people did not have it easy for sure. Yeah All right, if Jesus were to come to your house for lunch, how would you respond and what would you make? Oh, I really hope it's not for rice cakes with peanut butter If he shows up I want to say that I'm not gonna be busy Like like cleaning my house, but I'm a clean freak and so the Mary Martha story It's too close to home every time I hear it because I'm I'd be trying to clean I'm like Jesus Can you just hang up my door for two seconds while I clean my house? But no, I like what am I gonna serve him? Is that the answer? What how would you respond? What would you make? Oh, I'm gonna make you I'm gonna have this is a cliche Jesus answer I'm gonna give him just a couple, you know loaves of bread and some fish and see him do his multiplication You give him like ho-ho's cuz he probably never had one or like a Swiss cake roll or something No, I hope what I would do is I hope I would invite him in and then I hope that I would invite everyone in My life to come. Mm-hmm. Like I think that's that that's what I hope I would do is that I'd invite him in and then I'd invite all the messy Sinful people in my life to come and join me I think that's what I think that would be the answer that I would hope I would say like I yeah like It wouldn't be the church people. I'd invite I'd invite just all the messiest people in my life You know The guy who's got three if it had three affairs and everybody talks smack about the gal who's sleeping around the guy like This and that I think that's the I hope that would be the people that I would invite over Excite seems to be that's the type of people who are really out in the odd Jesus and actually want to meet with him So yeah, yeah good answer The neat freak in me would want to clean first and Jesus would be like, are you kidding me? Jesus just hang it. Yeah. I know you deeper than that. You got more to worry about than just Just hang at the door for just two seconds. Okay, give me a sec. There you go. Are you ready for your last question? Let's go. Let's hear this class question. If you had one do-over in life, what would it be? Oof If I had one do-over in life, what would be? Let's let's kind of do a light-hearted question or a light-hearted response and then a more of a serious one So light-hearted response. That's actually a true thing. I wish I would have hanged out hung out with my dad more often

So my dad is health wise is not at a great place now, but he is the most patient man He's a licensed plumber Licensed contractor master electrician. He would have taught me everything and I only wish I would have hung out with him more Yeah to gain that we hung out a lot like relationally So I have a great relationship with my dad But I just wish that I would have done that differently because now I wish I could use my hands to do things So that's kind of the more light-hearted answer. I think for me I think I I don't know if there's a way to get this earlier though. I wish I would have Realized the importance of becoming self-aware sooner. I I I feel like I am a like a good person who's trying to pursue Jesus I feel like I'm a good friend neighbor or whatever, but I always haven't been a good leader and boss And so if I could have a do-over, I just wish I would have learned that sooner like just the importance of a staff and importance of caring for them and pastoring them instead of just Just going going going going so I think if I had a do-over I would have just really and I think that might have come through mentors Like I kind of mentioned and taking more ownership of my own leadership. Maybe I would have done like a self-awareness 360 you want to action step for dimmer in your 20s Every person should do a 360 you think in your 20s in your 20s. Oh my gosh, that would be gold Uh, in your twenties, every single person and you should invite, you should have your, your significant other. If you have one. Can you explain what a 360 is? A 360 is where you send out questions, uh, and it's anonymous, uh, asking for feedback from people. What is it like to experience Adam at his, at his Adam at his best? What is it like to experience Adam at his worst? How often is he at his best? How often is he at his worst? If there's one thing that you could say, uh, to Adam that you haven't said, what would

you say? If there's one thing that you could say to Adam about his future and growth and an edge that he needs to address in his life, blah, blah, blah. So you send that out and I would include your significant other. I would include your siblings. If you're game, your parents, your maybe two to three best friends. If you have a mentor, include them, any staff that works directly with you, any staff that works above you, uh, send it out to 20 people and get their honest feedback. Boom. So like, I mean, it's just gold. It's your best friend. And if you are healthy and confident, you will welcome that. And if you are maybe, uh, in mature is another word, you will welcome that. But if you're immature, insecure, unhealthy, you won't want it. You'll just be like, ah, I think I'm good. But like, I just wish I would have done that sooner because it, I just, I hope at the end of my life, the people closest to me that respect me the most. And I don't know if that'd be true about the staff that I had the first 13, 14 years and maybe even right now because I'm still on that awareness journey. Like it's not that big of a deal. Yeah. Like it's, they're overreacting. People like don't see it. Like, yeah. Yeah. I think, but if you have, you know, 20 people and they all say the same thing, it's like, okay. You know, wait a second.
