Are You Following Jesus or Just Believing? | Same Demons. Different Day. | Week 3
What if you've been reading the Bible your whole life and still missing what's really going on?
In Part 3 of Same Demons, Different Day, Jim Burgen unpacks the spiritual world behind the Bible's bigger story, from the divine council in Psalm 82 to the rebellion in the Garden of Eden. Understanding the Bible in its original context changes how we recognize spiritual warfare, understand our enemy, and put our faith into action today.
If you've ever struggled to understand the supernatural parts of Scripture or wondered what spiritual warfare has to do with your everyday life, this message will challenge you to look beyond the surface. Watch and share it with someone who's ready to dig deeper into God's Word.
In this message you'll discover:
- Why understanding the Bible's original context changes how you read Scripture
- What Psalm 82 reveals about the divine council and the unseen spiritual world
- How the rebellion in Genesis 3 connects to the spiritual battle we're facing today
- Why following Jesus requires more than believing the right things
- How prayer, gathering with other believers, and bold action strengthen your faith

So I hope you brought a Bible or you have a Bible app and if you didn't or you forgot it or you lost it, you never had one. There's some in the back of all of our auditoriums and all of our campuses are all joined together and there's people around the world because God's word is the only thing that's going to change this world, amen? And so we're going to lean into that. But we have so much to cover today. But before we get into today's teaching, I'm going to go back and follow up on a couple of things that we unpacked last week. If you weren't here last week, you should have been anyway, but I'll come back to that later. But anyway, but here's what we covered last week. First, because of what Jesus has done for us. When we put our faith in Him, this might be new information for some of us, all right? When we put our faith in Jesus, we have been given the right to become children of God. And as His children, we are commanded by Jesus, our King, to love and act differently than the world does, than those who don't call Jesus, Lord, King, and Savior. We ended last week with a call to repentance. I got to rethink some things. To reexamine, rethink some of our mindsets and our thoughts and our corresponding behaviors, and then bring them back into alignment with the truths that Jesus promised
will lead us to experiencing an abundant life, primarily in the way that we love one another or refuse to love people. So the question last week for us to ponder and then answer and then make whatever adjustments necessary to bring our lives under the authority of King Jesus was this, am I loving other people, including my enemies? Those who disagree with me believe different than me, right? Am I loving all people in the same way that Jesus loved me? That's the question we have to be asking every day. So that was the first take away. Take away number two was around this. Jesus said, all right, King Jesus, by the way, he doesn't ask, he commands, all right? In Matthew chapter five, he says that we, as His family, living in His kingdom, He said, you are the salt of the earth. So what's all do? Holds back the decay of our society, our nation, our state, our schools, our marriages, our children. How? By leveraging our faith to hold back decay and bring light into a dark world. He didn't say, hey, Christians, try to be kind of like salt or trying to be salt, no, no, no. He said, that is what you are. You are, which means this. If His followers don't hold back the decay of this world, it won't be held back. I'm preaching better than your amenant. I'm just saying, all right, you're going to get involved in this. So being a follower of Jesus is much more than a whole list of things
or information that we say that we believe about God. It's true about Jesus and what He has done, right? If you are a follower of Jesus, write this down if you're taking notes, all right? If you're a follower of Jesus, that means you follow Jesus. Thank you, sister, all right? I heard my friend Matt Chandler down in Texas one time. He said it one time, it over means retreat. There are two groups of people in the world, followers of Jesus and not followers of Jesus, and there's no middle ground. See, followers of Jesus have put their faith in Jesus, and then daily follow Him, and live out and put Him to practice what He commanded us to do. So Book of James, it's toward the end of your Bible. If you want to go there. James chapter two, so Mary and Joseph have been on high kids, all right? James is one of those half brothers of Jesus. He says this to what? Here's the question. What good is it, my brothers? So he's talking to the church, sisters, right? So what good is it, Christian? If someone says, I have faith but doesn't have works, then do anything. Can that face save Him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you, Christians, says to them, go in peace. I'll bless you, right?
Be warned, be filled without giving them the things needed for the body. Here's the question. What good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead, dead faith. Some will say, oh, you have faith, I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith. What I believe is true about Jesus, what's what I do? You believe that, oh, I believe in God. You believe that God is one, you do well. Even the demons believe that. So you're in the same category, right? But they shudder. Right? And last year, we decided as a church, right? The one way we could put our faith into action was by, we put a flag in the ground. We're declaring war on sex trafficking of children around the world, especially right here in Colorado. All right, amen? [applause] And everything connected to that, protecting them from demonic ideologies around gender identity and fluidity and irreversible mutilating surgeries, not simply because we find it personally repugnant, which we do, but right this way, because it's demonic. It's a demonic attack on the image of God, and it is destroying the lives of the youngest, defenseless, imagers of God, our children. And we just said this to the spiritual realm, not on our watch.
All right, we will rearrange our time, our attention, our money, do whatever it takes to protect our children from being consumed and destroyed, amen, right? So on your seat when you came in, all right, there should have been a little card there listing three of the many issues you should pay attention to on the ballot in November 4th. And they're on the ballot. This is what I've been told, right? It's because thousands of you signed a petition, or they would not have been on the ballot. And I've also been told that many, many, many, and then they followed suit, then they did the same, alright? So that's courage, that's really good, right? So if you're new around here, it's like, oh, it's one of those churches, right? We are not getting more political. We are holding back the decay that always happens when government, always happens. When government leaves its lane and becomes theological, and assumes the role of our lives that only belongs to God, alright? So all three of these things on here, they align with God's truth, they address the protection of our children who cannot speak for themselves and are counting on us. Alright, let's look at them. Just the name should be enough for you. How about this? The children are not for sale act. I'm voting for that.
It increases penalties for individuals convicted of trafficking a child for sexual servitude and establishes life imprisonment without parole as the penalty for those convicted of purchasing or selling a child for sex. (audience applauding) I hope you brought a seat belt, 'cause I'm just getting warmed, alright? So for clarity, alright, there's a lot of misinformation out there, right? Victims of sex trafficking are protected from the penalty. We're not gonna put those kids in jail. Like, hey, call right, listen up, alright? Currently in Colorado, you can sexually molest a child three times and get bail. We become the desanctuary, the sanctuary state for pedophiles. This is demonic and it must end, so we're serving notice to you, demonic world. It's over, alright? Look at the next one, the protect, I'm voting for this guy, I got a granddaughter who plays volleyball, the Protect Girls Fort Act, alright? It would simply require all school athletic teams to be designated as male, female or co-ed according to their biological sex. Let me correct some information, alright? There's not gonna be some genital inspections going on in your school.
That's the word on this street, no, birth certificate, appropriate medical methods, alright? So there's just, there's all this confusion out there, we gotta pay attention. How about this one, alright? The Protect Kids from Irreversible Sex Change Surgeries Act. Come on. (audience applauds) I know you can't clap for this at your office building, but you're in the house of God today, you can go, oh, let's go, alright? So this initiative was simply prohibit healthcare providers from performing irreversible sex rejecting surgeries on minors under the age of 18, for the explicit purpose of changing their biological sex. It's over, it's gotta be over, alright? So church, alright, let's just cut to the chase. Do you have genuine faith or dead faith? Sorry, so one acts, gets up and goes, the other one doesn't, the question is not, should Christians be involved in influencing our world and our government? It's a bad question, it's the wrong one. My question is this, how can you call yourself a follower of Jesus and not do all that you can, and the easiest thing you do is vote to protect God's children, alright? Put your faith into action by praying, then get off your knees and off your butt and off your couch and go vote, right?
Take your pencil, fill in three little ovals on a ballot and save a child's life and future. You can do it, I believe in you, alright? Third takeaway is this, right? If my people, my people, not talking about those, right, my people who are called by my name, we're called by the name of Jesus, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and we're gonna end here today, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven and heal their land. Anybody agree that our land needs some healing? So real change for the better starts not in the White House or the State House, it starts in this one, this house. And as we do that, we must also follow what God instructs us to do in all areas of our life. Jesus has told us to love one another as he has loved us, let that sink in. We're also commanded to pray for those around us, including those we disagree with, who believe differently than us, alright? Including our government leaders. We're told in God's word, pray for your government leaders, regardless of party or politics or policies. Scripture is clear, right? Stop acting and loving like the world action loves. We're different. Pray for those in authority, for them, and also for what it can lead for us. Look at this, Paul writing to a young pastor,
he lives in Ephesus, his name is Timothy, he says this. So I urge you, come on Timothy, right? First of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in authority. Why? That we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness, that's where it goes. And this is why it's so important, right? Proverbs 29 says this, when the righteous increase, when the righteous rule, the people rejoice. But when the wicked rule, the people groan. In the book of Romans, it feels like it says that the earth is groaning. You ever feel like it's just drive around. So lastly, I didn't ask you to be a permission for that. Listen, anytime you go, I got an idea. My whole staff goes, oh, here we go. All right, so, so I threw this out in all three, so I did it on Saturday night. I didn't know if I could do it on Sunday night. I threw it out for your response, and I received back a lot of positive responses. It's like, hey, I want to invite both governor, not to speak on politics, policies, or positions, but so that we could simply pray for our leaders, since one of them is gonna be our next governor. So on Monday, I sent out an, the same email to both candidates' campaign headquarters.
So far, I've only heard back from one, and hopefully I will hear back from the other. So between now and November, invitation's still open, all right? But the one that I did hear back from, I heard back from it in a couple minutes. And the answer was yes. So will you please welcome candidate for governor, Victor Marks and his wife, Eileen. Come on. (audience cheering and applauding) (audience cheering and applauding) Okay, so stay up, stay up, stay up, get back up, get back up, get back up. All right, so we had a conversation, we agreed that this is not a, the stage is not a campaign stop, all right? We're not gonna talk about policies or positions, we're simply gonna pray for you and for Eileen, all right? So I'm gonna pray, all right? And I'm gonna pray the same prayer, if Mr. Wiser responds, all right? 20 specific prayers for you taken from scripture, we're gonna pray it together, actually. But today, it's a great honor to pray for you, 'cause I cannot imagine what you're carrying, but you're being faithful from what I've seen so far. I'm gonna open this prayer up, all right? And then, there's gonna be prayers that I will invite all of our campuses
to pray along together for our leaders, as God tells us to do, all right? At all of our campuses, if you feel comfortable doing this, you don't have to, but would you just reach out of hand? It's a sign of blessing, and we'll do the same thing for the other candidate. Yes, you will, all right, and you will. (audience laughing) So here's, dear Lord, rather than pray for what I want to think or even believe is the right thing to cover, Victor, I turn to your word for wisdom, which will lead to blessings, so this is our prayer. And let's pray this together. We pray for our leader to be open to and fully embrace the gospel. We pray for God to keep him from wickedness. We pray for our leader to defend the needy. We pray that God will give him wisdom and surround him with wise counselors. We pray for him to promote the diligent. We pray for him to humble himself before you. We pray for God to protect him from wicked influences. We pray he will lead by example in repentance. We pray he will bring the people of Colorado's needs before the Lord. We pray for our leader to judge righteously. We pray that he will courageously stand for life both inside and outside of the womb. We pray for protection for his family. We pray that he will love and obey God's word.
We pray that he will rightfully punish evil doers. We pray that he will turn away from foolish counsel. We pray for him to reward good works. We pray that God will keep him from corruption and greed. We pray for God to protect him from enemies. We pray for him to suppress wickedness. We pray for godly voices and individuals who will speak truth courageously to our leader. Jesus, all authority has been given to you on heaven and on earth and all things belong to you. Romans chapter 13 says that the government authorities in our land are established by you for the good of the people and under their care and they will be held accountable by you, Lord, for how they took care of us, the people that you have entrusted to them. So we pray for Victor and for Eileen, their whole family and we will continue to pray that he will lead well because he is submitting to and following your leadership as his Lord, Savior, King, and Christ. From such a leader, we have nothing to fear but only to live with hope and expectation as God blesses Colorado once again, as we humble ourselves and pray and seek your face and turn from any sinful ways that do not align with your word. And when we do this, then we will experience freedom, forgiveness, and much needed healing in our land, our state, and in our nation. We pray all this in the name of Jesus, amen.
Amen, amen. Will you give them some encouragement? (congregation applauding) Thanks. Thank you. Yeah. (congregation applauding) Hey, hey, Victor. Victor. (congregation applauding) I just want you to say one word. If you agree with that prayer, will you express it just by saying, go. Amen. There you go. (congregation applauding) Whoo! All right. All right. So last week, I kept hinting that where we're gonna go this week. We're gonna dig into what God's original plan was for creation and for us. And by the way, his plan hasn't changed, but also to look at the multiple things that happened early in the Bible. A good word we were gonna use is rebellions that took place early in the plan. Rebellions that give this, that God knew would take place
before creation even came into existence. God created a world and created people knowing in advance that they would rebel and would require him to take on flesh, pay for that rebellion on a cross, rise from the dead and then send his Holy Spirit to us. Ephesians chapter one says that God chose us knowing what it would require and he still chose us before the foundation of the world. So we're gonna find out, all right? It's not that God had a great plan and sin messed it up. So he had to send in plan B, Jesus. No, no, no, no, Jesus has always been plan A. There is no plan B, amen, all right? So as you got to get warmed up, you're all right? So as I sat down to put all this content that I wanted to cover into one message, similar to content like three years ago I covered and it took two months to cover what I planned on cover today. And here's my choices. I can preach a sermon that will last like two hours, which I can do, I've been edged in that way anyway, but I shouldn't do that. Or I can dishonor the content by rushing through it, skipping the deeper dive below the surface and risk missing what's really going on. I'm not gonna do that. It's too important. But I'm already on page seven of my notes and I can't do it all if I try to dumb it down and right? And then Victor's office says,
"We'll be there all three service." And I'm like, "There goes more in my time." And it's like, just kidding, you know. So let me tell you what I'm getting. He has a lot of security with him too. So anyway, so I'm gonna spend my remaining time to give you some language and context for you to have and to hold on to, not just over the next couple of weeks, but hopefully you'll just hold on to it from now on. 'Cause what we're gonna unpack over the next month, all right? We'll change how you approach and read the Bible. But it's important that we have this before we dig into these three rebellions or falls 'cause it'll just be weird. But the rest of the Bible tells the story of what it's gonna require. Jesus, the Messiah's gonna have to come and fix everything. And how those rebellions are still affecting and influencing our world today. And then, so that was part one. This is part two. Then we get to part three, where it's gonna be a reality check. And I have a big ask for this church that I want you to consider and embrace. Once you realize the importance of what we're studying and teaching and where it leads, my goal is not to scare you. Here's my goal for you to walk out of here today.
Hey church, it's time to be bold. It's time to be bold. Amen, amen. Okay, I don't know, I don't know. Okay, so if you have your Bible, Psalm 82, where we started last week, I'm just gonna breeze through this part as a review. But in Psalm 82, here's what we read. And this has been in my Bible since I was forever. I mean, since I wrote, and I just missed it. It's been right there, right? This is what we looked at. God, all right, God Almighty, has taken this place in the divine council. Never heard a sermon on that, as a kid. In the midst of the gods, he holds judgment. So in one verse, we find several biblical realities that most of us have never heard of or understood. So we go, I don't know, and we skip over it. It's no big deal, it's an unimportant, it's irrelevant. And in doing so, we miss the underlying backstory that is the common story line from cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation. Here's what we find out, we have God, Hebrews, Elohim, referring to Jehovah, Yahweh, the one true God. That's our God, Father God. We find that God's not alone. We find that God has a divine council. That's what the Bible calls it.
Also called Elohim, small g, gods, plural, right? Different than God Almighty, but created by God Almighty. The Bible calls them, and it's otherwise sons of God, created by God to rule and reign in the spiritual realm with him. Not because God needs any help doing anything. But by his nature, God chooses to share his reign with his creation, including us. Time out, Jesus is not one of those sons of God 'cause he was not created. Jesus is the one and only unique son of God, eternal with the Father. We also find that God and his divine council, in this verse, are holding court over some other Elohim, spiritual beings, right? In verse six, they're called sons of the most high God, and they have rebelled against capital to God, put themselves in the place of God, and demanded to be worshiped by the people, rather than pointing people to the one true God, as they have been commanded to do. And in doing that, they harm the people that God had entrusted to their care, right? The rebellion and behaviors being judged have happened in the past. The sentence will be carried out in the future, which is the last half of the book of Revelation. And we win, by the way. All right, so now that's a lot. You're going, I'm glad I wasn't here.
That's, I got a nosebleed, just listen to that, right? So that's a summary, all right? But after hearing that, if someone is stopping on their way back to the parking lot to your car truck and go like, "Hey, what was that?" That's home 82, what was Jim talking about? Here's what most of us would do. Like, well, I think in the end, God's gonna punish some bad Eloh somethings, gods, all right? And take the nations back, right? And you'd be right, right answer. But if you stop there, you'll miss the bigger story. Because even though that may be new to some of us go, "Hmm, some of us go like, that's weird. I've never heard that before." See, the bigger question that we rarely ask is this, not only what's really going on in these verses, but an even bigger question is this, how do we get here? Because when you know the answer to those two questions, it explains the storyline of most of, if not all of the Bible and what's going in our world today. So, we have Elohim God Almighty, we have Jesus the Son of God, unique, right? We have a divine council made up of Elohim's small G gods, and then we have the sons of God, and they all are in a big category of spiritual beings called Elohim's. God is the Elohim of Elohim's, and Jesus is unique, but they're all Elohim's. But we can expand who the spiritual supernatural realm
includes, also included under the umbrella of Elohim's. You've heard some of these. Sometimes Elohim are referred to as angels, that's the most common one. Angel just means messenger, it's a job description, all right? Sometimes mistakenly, everything in the spiritual world gets lumped into angel category, and we're gonna find out that not only that, next week, you don't wanna miss next week, all right? Angels have a hierarchy of responsibilities, but angels and demons operate from the position of territories. They're assigned different responsibilities and duties in the spiritual, physical, and geographical areas of our world. So, next week, my friend, Pastor John Jenkins from Maryland, this brother can preach, he's what I get, I'll be done when I'm finished, he doesn't care about this, at all, and I love him, all right? So, you gotta be here and bring your amen. If you stare at him next week, I will have security, remove you for quenching the spirit. (congregation laughing) So, you better get your, come on, on, all right? So, press practice, come on. Let's go, all right, all right, all right. So, now there are, I'm gonna run out of time, but there are very distinct other Elohim's that aren't angels who have been with assignments like this. You heard this, cherubim or cherub. They're also known as throne guardians, or how about this, the seraphim
who surround the throne of God in continuous worship, re-revelation, holy, holy, holy, he's the Lord God of mine, that's them. I gotta clear up, I'm gonna pop some Jesus Bible bubbles for you today, this is my spiritual gift, right? For the record, this is gonna make some of you sad. People don't die and become angels. Look, grandma got her wings, no, she didn't. (congregation laughing) No, no, it's not biblical, all right? Angels aren't created in the image of God, so that would be a downgrade for people to become angels, all right? Also, Cupid, that cute little cherub that shootin' love arrows at Valentine's Day, it's not real. And angels aren't cute, they're just not. Every time a person meets an angel in the Bible, almost everything, every time the angel absolutely, don't be afraid, you know why? They're afraid, angels are scary, right? But the enemy knows that if he can take really important parts of the Bible, a true story, and turn it into a cartoon or a character or a fairy tale, you won't take it seriously. And then you'll miss the truth, and then you'll be vulnerable because you either were deceived, or you just weren't paying attention. Now again, all that, angel stuff, all right, it doesn't really seem that important
because when we read or hear all that information, all right, on a surface level, we find it's kind of irrelevant to what I had to do this week. But here's the goal, okay, all right? If you're a visitor, just sit back. I'm gonna talk to Flatters, all right? Hey Flatters, we need to grow up in our faith. We need to become mature in our faith and stop being and acting like shallow surface level, sometimes immature baby Christians, time to grow up. We're told to put on the full armor of God, and the sword of the spirit is the word of God, so we better get better on how to use the sword, the word of God, 'cause it's the only thing that will work and be effective against the spiritual forces formed against you. So I was talking to my friend Charlie this week, and I told him I was gonna use this and not give you any credit, but there you are, Charlie, all right, give it to you, all right? And he says, "Hey, Jim, I've been listening "to this last two weeks of same demons different day." You know, it's actually military intelligence. I don't ask what he does 'cause then I'll be killed. So I go, Charlie, all right, so I say, "Tell me more." He says, "Look at this, military intelligence "has the responsibility of knowing and revealing the enemy "so that we know what weapons will be required "to defeat the enemy." You see a tie in here, when you read about spirits
and angels and demons and cherubim, don't read that, and go like, "I know all about that, do you?" See, this is warfare, and this is spiritual, military intelligence, how to know your enemy to get better and more effective using your sword, the word of God, does that make sense? All right, so let's dig into this, all right, go with me, all right? 'Cause I hear this all the time, I read the Bible, and I'm like, "I just don't get it, all right?" You can get it, all right? God knew, 'cause he's so smart, write that down, all right? God knew that people would read his word, which contains his truth, they would read it hundreds, and now thousands of years after it was originally written down, and we would read it outside of the context and lived out world experience and understanding of the people that it was originally written to. Here's a great phrase that I stumbled on a couple years ago, all right? Does that make sense? Meaning the truths found in the paces of God's word are absolutely timeless and true, but the original authors and hearers of God's word lived and understood the world and the universe in a very different way. Yet the truths that God had the authors write down thousands of years ago that he wants us to embrace in 2006 in our own present day lives are timeless and true,
which means we have to take into account for that because what the people wrote and the counts they wrote down and how they knew it and understood it and articulated was in a way that they could contextually understand. Truth is timeless, context keeps changing. Example, okay, so don't do this right now, but here's your afternoon, you know, whatever, right? So if I were to ask you to give a piece of paper in a pencil and draw a picture of God, who is describing for you, he's eternal, he's all knowing, he's all present, he's all powerful, he's also invisible, he's spiritual, you're not able to go like, there he is, right? What would you draw? And most likely, tornado, I don't know, right? You draw something that would express as closely as you could get your brain around that most revealed the nature and character of God and go like, it's kind of like this. It's the closest picture of what you can comprehend. Does that make sense? Yeah, I want you to hold on to that. We'll give you another illustration. So if you were like to be dropped on an island somewhere in the world where nobody knew about God, never heard about Jesus and they don't speak your language, right, your first task would be to learn their language and what their words meant to them, not what their or your words mean to you. And don't do this, I've done some mission trips, right?
Don't just yell louder in English. I said, that doesn't work, they're like, run away, and if they don't understand, don't conclude, it must be because they're stupid or not educated. No, you would look at the context that they lived in and their word meaning and then try to find the best comparison, Jesus called a parable, right, that they might comprehend. And then you would point to something known to them and say, like God's kind of like that. Maybe you'd find out what their word that points to chief. And you have a chief? Okay, you have a big chief, well, God's the biggest chief. He's the chief of all chiefs, all right? Now he's got a chief in that context, it gets close, right? So in the writers of the Bible wrote down what we're gonna read over the next few weeks, all right? What God inspired them to write, they lived in a world where there were kings and courts and guards and family members, family members were considered, so kings have a bunch of kids and then send them out as ambassadors of the king. Now, see if this language feels familiar in our Bible. So when they were there, they were the physical presence in the room of how about this? They were the image of the invisible king they were reflecting and representing who wasn't in the room. Does that sound familiar? So you'll read or hear language that reflects that experience. So here's the reason I tell you that as you read
what we're about to read or hear what you're about to hear, your first response at times and you're like, "Do you think that literally happened?" That's not a bad question. But again, I want you to, I want to push this towards better questions. Like, should my first question be did that literally happen? Or how about this? Should I be looking for in what is happening in what I'm reading or hearing? This is what I'm looking for. What timeless truth is God trying to convey to me that can be found in what's going on here that is more than literal. If I'm willing to dig in and find it. I'll give you some big ones. Creation, did God literally create everything in six 24 hour periods? It's not a bad question. In my answers, yes, by the way. You can do anything he wants, he's God, all right? I can't explain it. But don't get hung up on the literal, you explain it to me, you're not just like I believe it's possible. Okay. Here's a better question. Can God create and bring order out of darkness and chaos? Ah. And here's why that's important.
If you read something in the Bible that you don't understand, I don't understand that, that could be real, right? Sometimes unintentionally, we don't mean to do this. In trying to bring that into a space or interpretation that we make sense that we can get our brain around, we might unintentionally change what it really was. And then we miss the more than literal truth that God wants you to see. I'm gonna give you a preview of two weeks from now. If you have your Bible with you, go Genesis chapter three, okay? We're just gonna go like half a verse here, right? Genesis is in the front, so it's cover, contents, a couple of maps, Genesis, you can do it, right? So it says this, right? And you're gonna wanna write, if you have your Bible, this way you should bring like actual Bibles to church with you 'cause you can write in the margin and go, I don't wanna forget that. You can't take screens with you, you can't, all right? So, Genesis three says this, you can read carefully, now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, that's enough, okay? Time out, write this down, no tickers. the Bible literal based on surface level reading and no digger deep, make up stuff like, well, in the beginning, apparently animals could talk. No, they couldn't. It's not true. There's
no evidence of that, or there was a time when snakes had legs, then God cursed them, and the legs fell off, and they had crawling their bellies. That's not how it happened. And it's stupid. Does that hurt your feelings? You don't have to talk to. I'm just, I'm just feeling right, right? But I've heard that priest. I've heard a priest in churches. First of all, it doesn't say snake. So if it's not talking snake, who or what is it? And the answer is you got to do a dig, dig, all right? Find out later. It's Satan. But here's an interesting fact. Let's talk about Satan. Why not, right? In the entire Old Testament, you find the word Satan used, I think, 27 times, but it has the article "the" in front of it, making it "the" Satan, so it's a job description of whatever this thing is. Just like the word angel means messenger, right? So the Hebrew word for this thing is, we find it's nakash, all right? And it can be translated serpent, the shining one, the adversary, or the deceiver. So the job of the Satan is opposing or frustrating or accusing someone. The Satan means the adversary. So it's not a snake, but it's a serpent. Yes. But you got to go, let's go back, all right? People back then, they knew, animals don't talk. They knew that, all right? So they knew this isn't natural, what's happening in front of me. This isn't a natural existing animal. It is the appearance of a supernatural being. So back then the reader read that or heard that and they said, when the serpent said to the woman, they went right to some Elohim is up to no good. In the book of Ezekiel comparing an evil king of Ezekiel's time that he's addressing to what happened back in the garden, right? Ezekiel 28 refers to the serpent in Genesis 3 as you were an anointed guardian cherub. You're a throne guardian. A profane thing that was cast
through the ground. Isaiah 14, read this later, describes this cherub and has fallen from heaven, fallen from Eden and says this, O day star, talking to the serpent, son of dawn, which translates from Greek and Latin, Lucifer. And here's what the serpent Lucifer said and tried to do. I'm going to make myself like the most high. But here is the result. You'll be brought down to shield the pit, the land of the dead. Now if you just stick with a surface reading, a talking snake lied to Adam and Eve and caused him to sin, then God punished the snake by cutting off his legs and made him crawl in the dirt. And you know what that sounds like a kid's bedtime story. So Timmy, you don't have to be afraid of snakes because God cut his legs out. No, that's like power in that. You know that? How about this? A more than literal, a divine being, a guardian cherubah, which the reader would have thought supernatural creature that combines features of an animal and a man, right? A serpent who guarded the throne of God, who had close proximity to God on his throne. You find another place, he's beautiful. But in this case, this serpent guardian cherub doesn't want to submit to God or see God share authority with humans. As a matter of fact, here's what he says in his heart, I will rule over God. I'll make myself like the most high and we'll see God's response is again, you're going to eat dirt. You don't want to be over everything. I'll put you under everything. And if you want to go back to last week, if you should have been here, it's really good, right? If God was standing there and Adam, you could see him and he had feet because they heard the footsteps and he had a voice. That means it was the embodied form of God, which makes him Jesus pre-Befle him. Which means that when Jesus said to the serpent later in that chapter, one of Eve's
future offspring will crush your head. What he was saying is the day's going to come and I'm going to crush your head. I need to bury him in and out. So time out, right? So, so you got involved. Maybe just going like, I can't breathe. This crazy area. So, let me, I'm going to correct a pop another bubble here. I'm going to correct a Bible urban legend that has made its way into the church. Most churches. There's no place in the Bible that says at some point before creation, Satan rebelled against God and took a third of the angels with him. It's not there. It's not true. There was no rebellion before Genesis chapter three. That's it, okay? The only place where you find Satan connected with a third of the stars representing angels is in the book of Revelation in reference to when Jesus was born, a war breaks out in the spiritual realm as Satan tries to, like a serpent, like a dragon devours Jesus at his birth. That's long after creation. Rebellion number one, Genesis chapter three in Eden, the place God created where God and his spiritual family and human family can live and reign together and get back to that plan. It's going to take the rest of the Bible and it's all messed up by chapter three. So, I entitled this series, same demons, different day, same agenda happening today, but but maybe a better title would be this, write this down. Wake up, church, pay attention. Use your God-given brain and open your eyes to what's really going on in the spiritually connected world around you, because if you will look through the lens of God's word, not culture, not politics, God's word and with some wisdom and the Holy Spirit that he promises to supply and give you, you're going see we're mrs. this, right? It's safer to keep all these Bible things as I don't understand that stuff.
It's just sounds like maybe a moral lesson, but it really sounds far-fetched, right? You know why you stay there? Because that way you don't have to apply the more than literal truth to your life and change it. Because if it means that, I got to make some adjustments. I'm not sure I want to do that. So I started this series by saying that much of the spiritual world that drives our physical world does not want us to do this study, because when we pull back the curtain on the thing beneath the thing that drives everything, and we open our eyes and our ears and our hearts through the lens of the Bible, the authority of Jesus, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and then we bring these spiritual realities out of church, out of the hypothetical, out of that, that happened a long time ago in a long place as far away. We bring it into our daily lives every day, our world, our nation, our state, our schools, our families, our culture. When we see what's happening in our government, our churches, when we call out the same demon that rebelled against God in Genesis 3 and the destruction of God's people is still alive and well today. We'll be able to see and understand oh that's what's happening in my world. He just changed his name. So when I stand on stage and say Satan is Baal and Baal is Allah and Allah is Satan and Muhammad is his prophet. He's been here last week for that one right? Here's what, it just got real and you cannot ignore it or be, it can't be received like yeah, world's a mess. What's the guy to do? Any church followers of Jesus, children of God, if we won't dig in and speak the truth of God, that God has revealed to us as he's commanded us to do, if we won't shine a light in the darkness as we are commanded to do, if we won't stand up and say no more, you can't have our children, you can't have our country or a state, you can't call evil good and good evil anymore, if we won't do it church, who's going to? Who will? And the answer is no one. The answer is no, there's not a plan B, we're it. See when godly people and godly pastors and godly churches and godly men and women and godly middle school students and high school students and college students, if we won't speak, ungodly voices will speak and act and continue to steal, kill, and destroy everything. And I conclude last week with this, judgment starts at the house of God, so we, God's people, flat arms, I'm not in charge of all of them, I'm leading this one, so I'm just talking flat arms, flat arms, we're God's people and we must humble ourselves and pray and repent of sin and seek the face of God, we have to go first, but that leads to a new sense of boldness. Humble yourself doesn't mean sit down and shut up, humble means literally
strength under control, pointed in the right direction at the right things, it means that we are boldly speaking the truth that we have been commanded to take to the world, not in arrogance, not in anger, not in our personal agendas, or not our political preferences, all right, and what means we are boldly speaking the truth that comes from King Jesus and we are on a mission that King Jesus has greatly commissioned us to engage in, so in this series I am, I'll go first, I am personally and I'm also calling our church flat arms to repent of what, of passivity, of being focused and consumed by the busyness, and I'll just put this word in there, the silliness of less important things, and to boldly speak and live the good news of the kingdom of God is here, that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life is what God's people have been told to do since Genesis and it will take courage to do it, right, and boldness because we looked at this last week, Peter wrote to us, don't be surprised when the fiery attacks come back on you, they will, but also don't be afraid because when you suffer from the gospel you are blessed by your Father in heaven, he's got you, all right, so story time, oh story time, so some of you already know this because I contacted you this week, but so this past Monday, all right, after teaching all of the last weekend and teaching with clarity that Islam and its God are the same God that same documented agenda destroyed, make America and Islamic country which real law will cross not only our nation, but our church and all Christians who refuse to bail to the Balinese Allah, well Sunday evening after I get home, all right, this is what Raman, she said to me in the kitchen, she says, hey Jim, if you keep teaching like this, we're gonna get killed, and I was like, she's paying attention, maybe, so I woke up on Monday morning and the best language that I could find to describe what is going on, all right, I felt like there was a dark cloud of oppression and blowback with gathering against me and against our church, so I got our video crew together, I need to send a message to our church, so I sent it out to members of our church, at least those of you who have subscribed to the text next to 80857, if you haven't done that you should do it just for this, all right, so I'm gonna ask you that, so I got some messages back, and I just asked people to pray for me, and I know that you did, right, but some of you were like, I'm gonna address this, like, some of you sent me messages going like, something happened? Buddy, like, are you afraid? I'm gonna be really, really clear. Get a good shot, right?
I'm not afraid. I'm not. (audience applauds) Now listen closely, right? 'Cause I'm not being pious and, I'm worried. I would consider it no greater honor than to give my life my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (audience applauds) Somebody going like, "I mean, die?" I'm like, "Yeah." But last week, as I wrote, as I sent my kids on the table and writing all these words, and I delivered them over the weekend and reflected on them on Monday. The reality is set in. Hey, I'm not talking about, like, I grew up, like, some days, some people in the world are getting pursed with you for their faith. No. See, when I spoke those words, I knew that there are hundreds of millions of people who follow a book and a false God, which demands, they are obligated by their faith to murder me if they have an opportunity, for questioning their God and their profit, which historically is beheading. But I also read this in the book of Revelation this week. This is John getting the glimpse of us, the reading is gonna look like in heaven. Look at this, all right?
Then I saw thrones and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. We rang with him. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God. And those who had not worshiped the beast or its image had not received the mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and rained with Christ for a thousand years. Here's what I want you to remember, right? File that away, because if and when that ever happens, apparently I'll be on the welcoming committee going, welcome to heaven, all right? I'll be waiting on you, I really will. I have an idea for a tattoo, but it's just so inflammatory. I'm not gonna say it. See me later, though, and I'll tell you about it. I'm gonna be honest with you, the only thing that holds me back from designing to go and be with Jesus right now is I gotta take good care of my wife, Robin. And I wanna preach to the gospel of Jesus to Flatearns and see lost and broken people save and healed until I can't breathe anymore. And also know this, all right? (audience applauding) I'm not saying that flippantly, like whatever, I don't know, please know. Here's the reality, Flatearns, right? We're not a small, unknown church tucked away in a little tiny town in the middle of nowhere.
No, all right, we have a very public platform and presence, and I promise the enemy has heard of me and us. And if they are faithful to their GI belief system, I'm on a list and a plan is being formed. But please know that this makes me feel more bold, not less, but along with that, wait, you're not gonna take that clap back in a minute, all right, so I'm calling on you, the men and women of Flatearns to step up and be bold with me. (audience applauding) In the book of Jude, Jude's one page you can read it this afternoon to contend for the faith, to fight for the gospel, to our whole other higher level, to take our faith from being this personal, which was never meant to be this little private me and Jesus thing in my heart, but to take what's going on in your heart with Jesus, your faith, and what's in your mind and begin, or become, to become more bold and put it into practice in every place, every room, every situation that God has placed you in, and to stand in, right? Whatever you are, I need you to boldly say, we need more of that, and that can't be here anymore. You are in that classroom, that business, that office, that works like for a reason. What do you mean? You are the salt of the earth, and Jesus, right?
You're the light of the world. Your mission is to bring Jesus into places that he will not be there unless you bring him there. So as your pastor, I'm gonna ask you, I can't make you, I can't coerce you. If I win, I could, but I can't, right? But I'm asking for three things moving forward spiritually as a military-intelligent church on mission, all right? I'm gonna ask you, all right? First one of the topology, I'm gonna ask you to pray for me more than you've been praying for me. You send me to pray for me a lot. I'm your pastor, I'm your teacher. I have a commission, an ordination, an anointing, a mantle on my life to teach the whole word of God, even when it's uncomfortable, politically incorrect, countercultural, it feels intrusive, and can come across as hateful or mean or reduced to, what are they against, not what are they for? It all could, possible if the truth isn't preached in the spirit of grace and love. I need you to pray that I balance them well. Pray for all the things we just prayed for Victor earlier, right? Boldness and submission to the gospel and humility and wisdom and courage and strength. And also, we please pray for my wife Robin, for my family, for their protection, their assurance,
their peace that if the, when the fiery swarm blows back on us, God will take care of him. And don't just pray that for me, pray that for all of our pastors and all of our leaders, and pray that for you, for yourselves, pray that over your entire family, get out of bed in the morning and pray that before you even brush your teeth. I mean, not once in a while, like every day, I pray this, this prayer. So that video went out early Monday afternoon to tens of thousands of people. And I promise you that knowing that I had 10, 20,000, from the army of God that God has surrounded me and one another with as a part of Flatirons. I promise by Monday evening, I felt peace descend and surround me and confident. Here's what I heard from God, keep going. I'm gonna keep going. So can I count on you to lift me up in prayer? Will you do that? (audience applauding) (audience applauding) Okay. (audience applauding) Yeah. (audience applauding) Okay. (audience applauding) Okay.
(audience applauding) There's a ball game on it too, I'll just tell you, right? (audience laughing) Somebody going like, I wish I hadn't clapped you earlier 'cause here's a second, I'm gonna be totally honest and transparent with you, all right? If I'm gonna stand up here, this is what I signed up for. You did too, when you got, gave your life to Christ, but if I'm gonna stand up here and knowingly willing to like fire my bones in a heart, a fire in my heart, it can't be contained, but if I'm gonna put my life on the line for the Lord Jesus Christ, to bring you the whole word of God for the building up of the saints, which is you, the church, Flatirons, and your marriage, and your family, and your children, and our state, and our nation. If I'm willing to do that, here's my ask, all right? Would you be willing to show up every weekend in the house of God, this church, more often than you currently are? I don't know, where are you, I don't know, all right? (congregation applauding) All right, now I'm gonna pack that with you, all right? It's not because we all like crowded rooms and long lines and bad traffic. Yeah, pray to Jesus, no, no. See, I told you this before, and you don't believe me, but I tell you, my goal has never been to build a big mega church, I hate the word, right?
And it's not like I get a raise based on attendance, I don't, I don't, I'm very content with my salary. Hey, I'll be honest with you, if I wanna get rich, there's easier ways to make money and less criticism. So here's the important reason why you being here every week matters. This is gonna be mind-blowing for you something. We come into the house of God to worship God, all right? Say, well, I don't like the music, it's not for you. It goes, it goes, it's for God. Well, you know, it's loud, you're gonna hate heaven. (congregation laughing) Listen, it's not even for the hope of the chance that, you know, I might hear something helpful, useful in my life, which I promise you always, you always will. No, we follow scripture commands the people of God to come together regularly and frequently as the church, as an act of worship and honor to God. By your simple presence, you're making a statement to God, you Jesus are my highest priority in my life, my time and my calendar. You're more important than my schedule or how tired I am from a week at work. As far as I'm coming in here to get ready for a week at work. Now, blow your mind, the average Christian who attends church in Colorado, attends church 1.2 times per month, all right? So we're good about 10, 12,000 people across all of our campuses. That means in the course of a month, over 30,000 people come and sit in our campuses.
Just never at the same time, except Christmas. Easter, right? And only hearing 1.2 out of four messages that God wants you to hear. And listen, all right, you're already like, all right. Jim, are you saying that to be a good Christian, I have to go to church every week? Yes! Yeah, I'll say it, yeah. Pretty much, right? I would say that I believe that if church was a higher priority in your life, you'd be placing yourself in a really great posture to hear from God about what you want for your life. So yeah, I think you'll become a better Christian if you worship Him more often. How about this? Why would a Christian who wants to grow in their faith? And by that I mean, I'd ask you, just what you say. A person who says, Jesus is my Lord and Savior and King of my life, and through Jesus, I've been rescued and saved and restored and forgiven. I've been given the right to be a child of God. I'm being healed of life's wounds, right? And attacked. Why would a person under that understanding not prioritize being in his house, not Jim's, his house has been more important priority than just about anything else on your calendar that would compete for that time.
See, if I ask you, like, hey, what's your goal with Jesus this year? Most people go like, I just wanna get closer to God. Good, right? I'm gonna be honest with you. Discipleship, having your heart changed and reformed into the image of God of God will be a tougher time happening. If it only happens by showing up to honor Jesus and worship with his family and be washed in the Word of God 1.2 times a month. Well, I go through the mountains and worship God. Great, the mountains, Romans chapter 1 says, they should remind you of the glory of God. And he created them, but he didn't say, go worship in the mountains. He said, go to church with one another. Be in God's house to worship, pray, and sit under the Word of God. That's the church, and guess what? Not my idea. but it's also a sign, it's a message. It's a statement of solidarity to all of those around you. Hey, I know how you felt all week long, you are not alone, look around. You're not in the minority, not in this room. We're on the same shared mission with the same Lord's Savior for seeing the same truth. I promise you, every mosque in America is packed out today. Or yes, yesterday, don't see me in email.
You know, they worship on shut up, all right. Every mosque in America and every city in our country is standing room only and worshipers outside the door 'cause there's not enough room inside. Not high-pitched, you ask any Muslim, like, do you get something out of it? No, do you dig the music? Have you heard? It's bad, no, but they don't, all right. They are there because they are in the presence of their God, false or not. Their shoulders, shoulders, with others worshiping the same God, calling on the same God for strength and courage and direction. And if they're doing that in the name of a false God, why would we who have put our faith in the one true God and Jesus Christ in me, is sent? Not do the same or more. Try to answer that, right? We come together to worship and honor the one true God and to encourage one another. 'Cause I tell you right now, right? Somewhere in this room, there's a single dad that's barely making it. And he looks at him and goes, there's a single dad and he's making it, I can make it. There's a mom who put her kids in the stroller all by herself 'cause she's a single mom and she drug herself in here, looking for some hope. Take care of my kids, I need some hope.
And she drug herself in here and she's surrounded by the worship of God and it's God's gonna bring her to another single mom, goin', we gotta keep goin', girl. That's what happens in here. And by our presence, that posture, God meets us there. And he teaches us and he strengthens us so that we can stand firm in our faith and in the end, stand. Church intended is a statement of priority importance. It's also a matter of obedience. Book of Hebrews says, do not forsake coming together 'cause you gotta encourage one another and you gotta worship the Lord and be washed in his word. And we need one another. So first prayer is a statement that we depend on and are asking God to do in our lives and other people's lives what only he can do. Second, church attendance, because of being in the house of God, every week is a statement of posture and honor, of worship, and importance. Look at this way, we go to church not primarily for what we get out of it, although we get a lot out of it, but for what God deserves to get. See, our prayers, our priorities, and our unity as believers. Third thing, we'll get out here. I'll be finished soon as I'm done. All right, so third, we have to put our faith into action and not just pray for the kids of Colorado.
Of course, we need to pray for them. The faith without action is dead faith, all right? See, we can put our faith into practice by exercising our right and privilege because we're Americans and we live in this country. We don't live in Sweden, we don't live in Iraq, all right, we live here. But we also have the responsibility to be the salt of the earth. What do you mean? You need to vote on November 14th, on November 4th, right? So here's our right Christians, fill in your ballot, mail it, go to polls, and protect the kids of Colorado. Now, I'm gonna pick a fight here, but it's my spiritual gift, all right? Do your own research on the candidates in your district and in your state, and vote for the one who's most closely, imperfectly, most closely aligns with the moral code of right and wrong and good and evil, not according to your party, but according to God's word. See, there are no perfect candidates. Last night, Eileen actually said, "Hey, man, I heard her." All right, that's not true. There are no perfect candidates, all right? And you can find flaws in every one of them, but heads up, Jesus isn't on the ballot. But these are the choices available to us, and one of them will pass policies that will fall on our children.
Now, here's what I know some of you. I've talked to you a lot of you, right? Here's what I heard some of us are planning, or this is what we've been doing, all right? Well, I don't like either candidates, so I'm gonna send a message by either not voting or writing in some obscure name that has no chance. Oh, you're gonna send a message? You're gonna send a message that nobody's reading. Right, the only message received will be on the evening of November 4th, who won? That's it. November 4th, what, oh, eep. (congregation laughing) God's word is in arid, I'm not. It's been in my manuscript for four days, and nobody's, somebody's getting fired. November 3rd, all right, right, right. That's it, and I just lost the point, but you wanna send a message, right? Here's a message to my heart and to my conscience, which might make you feel good about being true to your convictions. Personally, I call it self-righteousness. But in doing so, you passively vote it for the evil and decay that we've been experiencing to keep on going and keep on consuming babies, children, and families. Now, I'm gonna borrow this from Josh again. Voting's not a sacrament.
their nation. And the founders of our country knew that whoever's morality governs, governs our nation. So goes our nation. So, I have it from an insider source, insider sources. Not on dates apparently, but early return ballots that have already been turned in show a record number of men turning in ballots. The same source goes on to say, that's because of flat irons. I believe that's true. Come on. Because let me talk to men of flat irons. It's about time we led, right? We're leaders. Let's go first, all right? Now listen, I'm not pushing a party or a candidate. I won't. I will not do that, all right? But without apology, through the lens of the Bible, do your research. Look at the policies and positions and plans that are clearly stated on the front page of all the parties and all the candidates' websites, all right? It's not difficult in a matter of minutes to go this one most closely aligns with God's truth. And this one wants to codify what God calls sin into the fabric of our state and our city and our schools and our family. God commanded Adam and Eve to take Eden and spread it to the whole world so that God and people can live together in community. We have a similar charge to the church. Go to the whole world starting right here and bring the kingdom of God, the way we say that flat irons bring the awesome life of Christ to people living in a lost and broken world. And it starts right here, like today, from now on.
Amen. That's why I'm awesome. All right. I'll get a shot here, all right? I'm calling on the Bible teaching pastors of Colorado to step up and demonstrate courage and challenge their churches to be bold and partnered with other believers and stand against and crush the head of the same serpent that's causing your people to be broken. Amen. God, I don't want any pastor to feel judged by me. I'm late to the game. So pray for me and one another. Come together every weekend in person to show honor and worth to God and encourage one another and vote to the filter of what aligns closest to God's streets to hold back decay. So I'm almost done. I really am. Next week my good friend, Pastor John is going to be here and he's going to unpack Ephesians chapter 6. It's amazing, all right? Read it this week. But here's how I want to close today. I want us to pray. But I think there's a purpose in the order that God tells us to do things. He says, "If my people will humble themselves in pray." And sometimes I'm a kind of person like, "I have to actually, I'm very experiential." So here's what I'm going to ask before we close in prayer and then sing, "I speak Jesus, don't leave early." If you're able to, wherever you are in your campuses, would you be willing to get on your knees, physically get on your knees? It's a posture of non-humiliation. I'm humble.
Every knee will bow. So if you can, all of your campuses, if you can't, okay, don't, but I think you can, all right? There's one knee, it's all right. And I have the best seat in the house to see the people of God. So Father God, and I get to call you, we get to call you Father, because of what Jesus has done for us, the way he has loved us, the way he's poured out grace and mercy and forgiveness, the way he's held us together. And it's holding us together right now, because sometimes we're going through stuff that we would not be alive Jesus if you let go of us. And so in the name of Jesus, I come against anything that is a stronghold that binds us, that lies to us, just like that serpent, says, "You can't trust God, but you trust the world. You can trust me." In the name of Jesus, you say, "You have no place here." And God, we do, we want to be closer to you, we want to be near to you, but we can't hold on to you and hold on to our sins, so we want to repent and turn from evil ways, especially if evil ways are, "I just don't do anything. I'm passive and I just watch the world crumble." And there's some people in this world, especially some children in this world, who don't have the words, but they're somehow their spirits are crying out, "Somebody help me, somebody save me," and through your spirit right now, "God, could you speak to those children?" Even the unborn baby in a womb helps on the way, "Little girl, you're going to be alright." My people are going to follow me and obey me, and I'm going to rescue you. So we are your people, we're your family. In your name, I pray and speak over this church, the name of Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen. Let's worship the other. [MUSIC] I just want to speak the name of Jesus over every heart and every mind, because I know there is peace within your presence. I speak Jesus. I just want to speak the name of Jesus until every dark addiction starts to break, declaring there is hope and there is freedom. I speak Jesus. Your name is power. Your name is healing. Your name is life.
