Anchored In Prayer - Week 11

On this last Sunday of our Anchorage series, I know all, last Sunday. You know, there was one other time in the series where I felt led to switch what I had planned, and this was another Sunday, so I sent my notes over to the team on Thursday. I sent them my notes, I sent them the points so they could get everything loaded up and ready. And then this week, as I was praying and things a bit more, I hit up the team yesterday morning. I said, I'm sorry, I hate to do this, but we're going to switch everything. Switch the title, switch the scriptures, switch the points, switch everything. Because on this last Anchorage Sunday, the title, the topic that God wants me to speak to you on all today is simple. It's anchored in prayer. Anchored in prayer. I'm going to read this scripture, but before I read it, I'm going to pray. Heavenly Father, Father God, you see our deep need for you. Father God, you see how weak we are without you. Father God, with so many cares of this life that gets in our way, that tries to distract us, that tries to take our eyes off you, Father God, help us to keep our eyes on you. Help us to stay focused. Father God, for those in the room who's going through things that may pull them away, God, that may block your word that needs to get to them today, Father God,

I pray by the supernatural power of your spirit, Father. Would you penetrate hearts this morning? Would you move me out the way, Father God, so they could hear your voice, and they could hear your calling, and they could hear your word, and they respond to your voice. In Jesus' precious and mighty name I pray, amen. Luke chapter 22. I'm going to start at verse 39. It says this, Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives. I love the part where it says he went out as usual. This means what he was going to do, this was part of his practice. This is part of his regular habits. This is what he does. It says he went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, this is big, pray that you will not fall into temptation. He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done. An angel of heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. This is, I got to pause. This is just a wild thought as he's praying. An angel from the Lord, an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, look at this.

He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. Why are you sleeping, he asked them. Get up and pray. Get up and pray. Why are you sleeping, he asked them. Why are you sleeping? Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray. Why? So that you will not fall into temptation. On this topic, anchored in prayer, I'm going to talk to you as plainly as I possibly can. And not just as plainly, but I'm going to talk to you as urgently, as I possibly can. Jesus tells them to pray. And when he goes to them, it's a sense of urgency. I love when it says this. I love when it says they're sleeping, and it tells us why they're sleeping. It says they're sleeping because they're exhausted from sorrow. They're exhausted from grief. They're overwhelmed. well they've been through so many things up until this point let me paint this picture for you up until this point Jesus had been telling them the time is coming when I'm going to be crucified the time is coming where they're going to put nails in my hand the time is coming when I'm going to be beaten the time is coming where they're going to nail me to this cross it's coming and they just had the last supper that we all know about and he tells them it's coming and I'm going to be betrayed by one of you sitting here at this table and they have been walking with Jesus now for three years they've been his friends they've been his prayer partners they've been around him and he's trying to tell them listen the time is coming where everything you know

right now is going to change where everything you know right now is going to shift he's trying to tell them and he's trying to warn them for three years and then on this last supper it's now more real than ever it's now more real than ever what's about to take place and he's telling them it's closer than ever and as he's telling them I can imagine them just becoming overwhelmed now with sorrow overwhelmed now with grief overwhelmed because they know everything this man has said has come to pass so if he's telling us it's about to be all over if he's telling us that we should be preparing ourselves if he's telling us we don't know what to expect like this this this could be bad so they're overwhelmed with sorrow they're overwhelmed with grief and Jesus goes to them and he tells them this he says pray so that you do not fall into temptation point number one if you're going to be anchored in prayer you need to be anchored in prayer so that you will not fall into temptation what is this temptation he might have been referring to the temptation I suggest to you that he's referring to is this it's the temptation it's the temptation to step outside of God's will it's the temptation to avoid the suffering it's the temptation to avoid the discomfort that comes with being and walking in the will of God look at the prayer that Jesus prays himself he says father I pray if there's any way please let this cup pass from me this cup that I'm about to drink from this path that I'm about to walk this journey that I'm about to embark on this suffering that I'm about to face if there's any way father please let this cup pass from me but nevertheless it's not about what I want it's not about what I feel it's not about what would be easier nevertheless despite how I feel not my will but your will be done I love when Jesus prays this this is one of my favorite scriptures in the bible because it shows one of the most human moments in the life of Jesus here on earth in the life of Jesus here on earth we know in the scriptures it says that Jesus was tempted in every way like we was but yet he was without sin this shows one clear moment where Jesus he feels like oh man like I know this thing is coming up and I could imagine even Jesus feeling I don't want to this is tough imagining the pain imagining the loneliness he's gonna feel

imagining going up on the cross naked imagining feeling abandoned imagining the blood he's like you know what if there's any way if there's any way father if there's any way if there's another way please but he says you know what even as crazy as I feel right now even as wild as I feel right now even as weak as I feel right now even as afraid as I may feel right now not my will not my will but your will here's what he's God give me the strength to stay in your will to stay in your will because right now the temptation is great to step away and that's what he tells his disciples he tells his disciples he says not only am I gonna pray I need you to pray so that you won't fall into temptation and when Jesus walks away and prays he comes back and he finds them sleeping I love this as he found him sleeping in the same It tells us why they were asleep. It says they were asleep because they were exhausted from sorrow. See this is where, this right here is where a lot of us get lost when it comes to the Christian faith. This moment right here is where a lot of us get lost even when I'm up here preaching. This because Jesus knows why they're sleeping. He understands it. I know it's sorrow. I know it's grief. I know what you're going through is tough. I know it's tough, but I still have this question. Why are you sleeping? I understand it, but it doesn't excuse the fact that I still need you to pray right now. I know it's tough and I talk to a lot of people and sometimes, again if you ever heard me speak, you know sometimes I can be really intense. You think I'm intense now? Meet me in the gym or somewhere else. I'm really intense. And some people will come to me and be like CJ, you got to relax man. You got to relax man. But I can feel Jesus in this moment. They'll come to me, they'll be like CJ, CJ, you got to understand people are going through things. CJ, you got to understand it's tough for people right now. CJ, you got to understand it's grief, it's sorrow. You got to understand CJ, please don't be so hard. I can imagine Jesus in this moment knowing the sorrow that they're going through and still has to respond to them in this manner. Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray. I can imagine somebody going to Jesus. Jesus, you know they've been through a lot. Jesus, what do you think? Jesus don't understand what they was going through? What do you think? Jesus didn't recognize or understand what you're going through?

What do you think? He don't recognize or understand the bills that you face? The doctor's report that you have? What do you think? He don't get it? And yet his response is still, why are you sleeping? Get up and pray. So that you will not fall into temptation. This is big. Because here's what I recognize. He did not tell him to get up and pray so that nothing bad would happen. He did not tell him, get up and pray so that things could change. He didn't tell him, get up and pray so whatever's going to happen will be thwarted. He said, get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. What is this telling me? It tells me that the danger is never in what's coming. The danger is in how we respond to it. He said, I'm not telling you to pray because what's going to happen is going to happen. What's going to come is going to come. What's going to hurt is going to hurt. You're going to feel it. I'm not telling you you're not going to feel it. I'm not telling you you won't be confused. I'm not telling you there won't be sorrow. I'm not telling you none of that. I'm telling you pray so that you will not fall into temptation. Because the danger is not in what's coming. It's in how you respond to what's coming. How do you respond to it? And how you respond is often determined by your patterns beforehand. I'm going to say it again. How you respond in times of crisis is often determined on your patterns that you have leading up to it. See, the reason why Jesus was able to respond in prayer, because that first sentence that I read, it says, as usual. He was just doing what he always does. And you know why the disciples were asleep? Because if you looked off the scripture, this wasn't the first time Jesus told them to pray and they fell asleep. Why would it be any different in the time of crisis? Some of you have this same issue. You try to turn it on in the time of crisis. It's like, no, no, no, no, no, no. What will show up in the times of crisis is what you've been practicing, what your patterns have been on your day-to-day basis. This is why all throughout this anchor journey, I told you from the beginning,

I said, we get these patterns in place now. It's not for now. It's for later. I told you from day one of this anchor series, we're going to pray. We're going to gain community. We're going to give. We're going to start working on our bodies. We're going to do the things we're supposed to do now. Because some of you are going to wait till later and it's going to be too late. I told you this from January. It's going to be too late. I told you this from January. And if you missed it go back and watch it And we you know what happens because we don't Because we don't heed the warning because we're hitting our feelings because we don't really take it We start blaming God when we feel a certain way when things happen We start blaming God. We blame the world. God's like no. No, I told you to get ready then I Told you to pray then I told you to start eating right then I told you to start giving then I told You to get in community then So now when things happen Look no further than your patterns So he told them to pray So that they will not fall into temptation and and this is Wow because right after this I didn't I should have asked him to Put this on the screen But right after this as a matter of fact It says if you read the next verse and go home and read it later if you read the next verse They says as Jesus was speaking As he was speaking as he was telling them get up and

pray you sleep and It's all about to happen you sleep. You still some of y'all sitting in this room. I still sleep You still going through your life like everything is casual You probably looking at me right now like CJ. Why are you so intense? Because I understand the urgency that's necessary for these times. I Need y'all to get the urgency that's necessary for these times the time of coming to church and just sitting down and looking pretty is over Get up and pray Because when the time comes You will not be able to look at me and blame me You will not be able to look at the church and blame the church You will not be able to look at the church and blame the church you won't be able to look at God and brain blame God She said I told you To get up and pray And as he tells the disciples as he says as he's speaking as he's telling them to get up and pray As he's speaking. He's like get up and put and all of a sudden the crowd starts coming All of a sudden the soldiers start coming All of a sudden is game time and here go the disciples popping up Looking around and go go read the scripture for yourself. It says this It says Peter and the disciples looked at each other and they start asking should we fight? Should we pull out a sword and they pull out the sword and he cuts off the soldiers ear and then Jesus looks read the scripture for yourself Jesus looks and he says enough Stop What are you doing as if to say this is why I told you to pray? Because when crisis come if you don't have a pattern of prayer, the only response you have is an emotional response And your emotional response will often have you acting outside of the will of God Because you think it's the right response Could you imagine in this moment defending God and God telling you stop? I didn't ask you to defend me right now. I Didn't say I need defending

You don't even know what a right thing to do in a moment of crisis because you haven't been praying So now all you know to do is to act out of your emotion All you know to do now is fight All you know to do now is cut off the air All you know to do now think of your own life where you may get in crisis All you know to do now is cry and complain All you know to do now is argue. All you know to do now is point the finger and blame All you know to do our do now is look for trauma bonds and find people who agree with you and form little posse's All you know how to do is that? He said I'm trying to show you The only way you know what to do I promise you the only way you know what to do is to get on your knees and pray when now Pray so that you won't fall into temptation. What's the temptation? Like I said, it's to step outside of his will They cut his ear off and look at Jesus even in this whole I should have had to put the whole thing up on the screen. I'm sorry I've been reading through the Easter story as I'm preparing for Easter Jesus picks up the ear and he says he heals the man And he says he heals the man Jesus picks up the ear and he says he heals the man What did I say? In a moment of crisis, your pattern is often determined how you respond. Jesus is still performing miracles in a moment of crisis. Because it's what he's been doing. It's who he is. He's in alignment with the Father's will. I'm going to continue even as they arrest me, even as they come to kill me, even as they come to destroy me, even as they come to backbite me, even as your enemies are plotting against you. Could it be possible that God has called us to respond in ways we're not even thinking about? In ways that we will only know to respond if we get down on our knees and pray. This is why I pray every day. This is why, let me tell you what I do sometimes and it's not even in the notes. There's times when I go to bed and I could be tired at night and I don't know how I'm gonna get up in the morning. Can I tell you what I do? It's just a little, it's just a little hint for some people wondering how it works. I'm like, I don't know how I'm gonna get up in the morning. My wake-up time is real early, so I pray in that moment. Come on, the Bible says

man ought to always pray. I pray in that moment. I say, God, please wake me up in the morning so that I can spend time with you. Put a verse in my head, put a song in my heart. As I wake up in the morning, can I tell you I did that about two, three times this week. Can I tell you each and every time God just wakes me up. It's miraculous how it happens. He just wakes me up. A song is in my head. A verse is in my heart. I go downstairs and I start to pray. I start to pray and I start to play the song that he put in my head. I start to read the verse that he put on my heart and he begins to speak to me through this. He begins to show me what to do. He began to tell me things that I wouldn't know. CJ, how do you prepare for what's coming? How do you stay anchored in a world that's shifting? I tell you how. I stay praying. I'm not the smartest. I'm not the most gifted. I'm not the most anointed. I'm definitely not the quietest. But I'm gonna pray. And Jesus tells him to pray. I could imagine the only way Jesus was able to stick to his father's will, the only way he was able, was the fact that he prayed and this is what happened when he prayed, is that he prayed and an angel showed up and strengthened him. The thing that God has called us to do, we cannot do it in our own strength. The ways that God called us to respond, you cannot respond in that way on your own strength. The only way you're able to respond the way God called you to respond in times of crisis is that you pray and when you pray you get supernatural strength. CJ, how did you do it? I don't know. I just prayed and I'm telling you right now in that moment that wasn't CJ. Because CJ would have reacted like Peter. CJ would have cut off the air. CJ would have, do I need to fight? But because I got on my knees and I got revelation from God, I got the blueprint on how he wanted me to respond and I got the supernatural strength in order to do it. He's graced me in order to do it. I can tell you right now, there are some times that when we pray, you might not even see anything happen. Sometimes we pray and we look around and we're looking for an answer, a response in that moment. God's like, sometimes I will just give you divine strength in that moment, you won't even see it. You won't even feel it. Some of us miss it though because we do not pray. We allow situations, we allow circumstances, we allow sorrow, we allow defeat, we allow grief, we allow our feelings to take us out and lull us to sleep. We allow things in our life to lull us to sleep. Jesus is like, when things come, when things happen, when pressure comes, pressure will either

pressure will either bring you to your knees or make you close your eyes and go to sleep. The devil is counting on you going to sleep in times of crisis. He's counting on you. He's counting on you to be unaware of everything that's happening. Why? Because he knows if I could get them to respond in their feelings, if I can get them to respond in their emotions, if I could get them to respond based on human thinking, In human logic, I can get them operating outside of the will of God. And you know what's so tricky about that? Sometimes our feelings and our emotions, like I said about Peter, sometimes our feelings and our emotions, it feels like the right thing to do. It makes sense logically. Imagine Peter like, God, I'm defending you. What you mad at me for? I'm defending you. I'm fighting for you. I'm stepping up to the plate for you. I'm lifting my sword for you. This is for you, God. You could be doing things for God and still be outside of the will of God. Why? Because you're going based off what this is what I think I should do. Tell me what you think you should do. Tell me what you prayed and God strengthened you and led you and guided you to do. And it's often times in those moments. It makes absolutely no sense. It makes absolutely no sense. So he says pray and you'll be strengthened. And not only will you be strengthened, but you will be surrendered. When you pray, God gives you the ability to stay surrendered to his will, to stay submitted to his will, even when you don't want to. Even when it's hard for you to do so. There's so many times in my life where I did not want to keep doing the right

thing, where I did not want to keep going along the path. I remember being in this program. When I was younger. And there's everything in me that wanted to get out of this program that I was in. I hated it. Teaching me certain things. I remember. It was back and it had to be in about 2008. When I was in this program and this program was an internship program. It was split up into a year, six months. I was doing training and learning in a certain area and the other six months I was supposed to be. In the corporate 500 company interning in the first six months. I remember I signed up for the part of the program that was about investment operations. And I'm studying everything about investment. I'm studying everything about banks. I'm learning the things getting ready for that second six months. And here's what happened during that second six months. The country just ended up going into a recession. And as I was about to go into the second six months as the country's into recession, I'm supposed to go into the to the money field, the investment field. But they were firing everybody in that. Department. There were no investment opportunities for me to get involved in. And so in my mind and my own feelings, I'm like, man, I just wasted six months. I just wasted all my time here learning this thing, man. This is dumb.

I'm leaving the program. They like I had a mentor and a mentor is like, my name is Roland. So my mentor is like Roland. I need you to stick with the program. I'm like, no, I don't think now I have to go into investment information technology. I don't know anything about it. Everything I know is about investment operations. He said Roland. I need you to stick to it, please. I remember going home and praying like God. I don't want to do this. I'm gonna go into this environment. I have no idea what this thing is. I've studied nothing about this. And I just remember God just telling me just continue to be obedient. Continue to be obedient. I don't want to. I go into this corporate office every day. I was in New York City. So I'm working on Wall Street. I will go into the office every day on Wall Street. Like God, I don't know what I'm doing. Not even supposed to be in this field. And every day my mentor will come to me rolling. Just stick it out rolling. Just stick it out. And I remember going home praying God. I don't want to do this. And then the time came when I end up meeting get this the chief

technology officer of the sector. I meet the chief technology and then he comes to me and that's where I'm meeting. He says rolling. Don't you know, we have a tech center that's opening on Sarah in Syracuse University and because you're in a tech department, we are able to stay full-time get a full-time salary and go to Syracuse University and work in the technology field. I go to Syracuse and I'm working on the technology field and I meet one of my friends there that pastor used to be here pastor Josh Jensen. While I'm there and we begin to talk me and Josh we get cool then later on Josh hits me up and say you would ever want to move to Rochester. I'm like, no, I don't want to go to Rochester. I know. story. Long story short, I'm here today. I'm on the stage today. I'm speaking to you today. Why? Because I prayed, God led me, I obeyed. And the moment where I did not want to, all the way back in 2008. Some of us are looking for what God's going to do, but we're looking for it to happen too quick. We're looking for it to happen right now. What if God wants you to stay obedient now for 20 years later? Will you be able to pray and stay obedient if no promise is coming tomorrow? Would you be able to stick to it if it's just 20 years later? I want to do something in your life 20 years later, but I need you to be obedient right now. I need you to pray right now. I need you to get ready right now. And I don't need you to abort the process because you're in your feelings. For some of us, our kids' lives and generations that will come out of us is going to depend on whether or not we have patterns of prayer right now. Because when you submit to his plan, here's what the enemy tries to get you out of. In his plan, there's sovereignty, there's safety, and there's sanctification. There's sovereignty. God is in full control. When you submit to his plan,

God is like, all right, I got you. I'm in full control. I'll order the steps from here. All you have to do is obey. All you have to do is listen. And the enemy knows this, so he tries to get us outside of his plan. He tries to get us outside of his will. He said, move from under his control. Move from under his authority. Can I tell you something? It's not just his control and his authority, but it's his safety. It's his security. He says, I'm trying to protect you. I'm trying to keep you safe. Some of us, we think it's safer being in our own plan because we know the next step. Some of us is like, you know what? I don't know what God is doing over there. I know what I'm planning out over here. So I'm gonna be over here and I'm gonna do my own thing. Can I tell you? I'd rather be unsure in the will of God than perfectly sure outside of the will of God. I'd rather be in his plan, submitted, ready. Father, I'm at your service. I don't know what in the world you're about to do, but there's safety in your hands. There's safety in your will. I'll stand here. CJ, what are you going to do in 10 years? CJ, what are you going to do in 20? I don't know. I don't know. Here's one thing I do know is that when I don't know, you'll find me on my knees praying. It's the perfect spot to be in prayer, in submission to his will. And here's the last part. It's his sovereignty, it's his security, his safety, and it's his sanctification. What is his sanctification? He is making you and shaping you to become more like Christ when you stick in his will and when you stick in his process. The enemy wants us to abort that so we don't become the people that God wants us to become. He wants us to act in our feelings. He wants us to act in our emotions because you know if I could just get them outside of the will, they'll never become the people God wants them to become. They'll never become shaped. They'll never become molded. They'll never stick into the process long enough. I just told you back in 2008. I don't know how old I was in 2008. She said 19. I'm gonna go with 19. Do you imagine that? 19. For context, I'm 37 now. God giving me instructions at 19 for 37. What is God telling you right now for when you're 60? 19, I had no kids, wasn't married yet. God had it all in mind. Can I tell you something in his God had it all in mind. Can I tell you something in his plan? His plan is thinking long term. Our

plans are so short-sighted. We got no idea what's coming tomorrow and we're trying to plan for 15 years. Okay. Pray. Pray. You want to stay anchored? Pray. When? Now. Heads bow, eyes close. I believe with all my heart that God bought us through this anchor series. If I didn't believe it back in December when he first placed it in my heart, if I didn't believe it in January, if I didn't believe it in February, I believe it right now towards the end of March more than I ever believed it. God bought us through this series. He started getting us in these habits. He brought us here so that we can get ready now. God had us here and has us here to get ready right now for later. Will you hear his voice today? Will you get on your knees and pray today? Would you begin to put in patterns of prayer? For some of us, we've been in this journey for the past 70 days or so, and we still haven't really, God is like, I'm coming to you one more time. I promise you I had a whole message planned. I scrapped it all yesterday morning. He said, one more time, I'm going to come to them and tell them to pray. Wake up and pray. Get up and pray. You're tired, I know, pray. You're grieving, I know, pray. You're struggling, I know, pray. You're overwhelmed, I know, pray. There's this coming, and the danger is not in what's coming. This is not for you to be scared, oh my gosh, I'm scared, I don't know. It's not in what's coming. Don't be scared about what's coming.

Be more concerned about whether or not you've been in a position praying so you know how to respond when the thing comes. Father God, would you give us strength to pray, to stay in your will? Father God, as individuals, as a church, as disciples, Father God, I pray that we're not the followers of Christ, that we're not disciples that are asleep. Father God, wake us up in our businesses. Wake us up in our relationships. Wake us up in our communities. Wake us up in our schools. Wake us up. Wake up your people, Father God, so that we begin to pray like we need to pray so we can get divine instruction and divine strength for what you want to do in this generation. May we always be submitted to your will, may we always be submitted to your plan. We need you, we love you, we thank you. Strengthen us now. Strengthen our hands now. Can you all lift your hands up to God right now? Hands lifted all over this place, Father, strengthen our hands now. Give us strength, Father God, to do the work that you've called us to do. Place your hands on your head right now, everyone. Father, give us your mind, Father God. Help us to think the way you want us to think, Father God. Do me a favor, y'all, place your hand on your eyes right now. Father God, I pray that you give us your vision, Father God. Give us your perspective on things, Father God, so that we will walk by faith and not by sight. Place your hand on your mouth right now. Father God, we pray over our mouths, Lord God, so that we will speak the words that you want us to speak, that we will speak on time words, Father God, in the time of crisis, Father God.

If you can reach your feet, place your feet, place your hands on your feet right now. Father God, I pray that you direct our feet, direct our steps, Father God, keep us submitted to you. If the highest place I reach is at your feet, then I've done it all. If the best thing that I see is your glory, then I've seen it all. Your love has changed my life, forever satisfied, God, you are my everything, oh, God, you are my everything. Can everyone stand to your feet? It's one thing to pray as individuals, it's another thing to come together as a body and pray. Can we put up the slide for Easter prayer, Easter prayer, throw that up on the screen please. Easter prayer next Saturday. Next Saturday, 9 a.m., we're going to have a special time of prayer together because Easter Sunday is a day where hearts begin to come to Christ, people are more open to coming to Christ. And I believe something powerful will happen this Easter, but it's going to start with us coming together as a church body, as a family and praying together, seeking God together, calling on God together. Maybe some of you have been praying for your own loved ones that you have been asking to come to church. Father, would you bring them to you? Father, would you help them to know you? I want to invite y'all this Saturday at 9 a.m., we're going to be across the street, we're going to pray together, we're going to call out to God, we're going to ask God to do it. And I'm already praying and believing that this Easter, God is going to call so many hearts to Him. He's going to make so many people sensitive to Him. It's not about production.

It's not about a fancy show. It's not about anything but hearts turning to Christ. Father God, I pray that you give us all the strength, the ability to show up this Saturday at 9 a.m. And last but not least, could y'all put up the next slide with the serve opportunity.
