Pearls, Playgrounds, and Purpose
Jesus used many illustrations, or parables when speaking to crowds. A parable is a story which compares something familiar to the listener, with something unfamiliar and tells a moral truth. In several of His parables, Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to various items, including a fishing net, hidden treasure, a mustard seed, and even yeast. In this Scripture, He compares the Kingdom of Heaven to fine pearls that a merchant seeks after. The merchant finds one and deemed it to be of such value that he goes away and sells all that he had to purchase it. Like the merchant, we must realize that the Kingdom of Heaven is something that we too should seek after. It is not a geographic location or a tangible item to hold, but a spiritual realm where God rules. We can become a part of it when we trust Christ as our Savior.
