también va a recibir probablemente una brújula, ¿alguno ha escuchado lo que es una brújula antes? Claro, esto es una brújula y la tengo porque tú me vas a recordar, espero yo, esta prédica de hoy en adelante, y de igual manera para cada uno de ustedes, aquí ven una brújula y una brújula solo hace una cosa, ¿y qué es? Te dice dónde está el norte, dónde está el sur, dónde está el este y dónde está el oeste, ¿no? Básico sencillo, clase de ciencia básica quizás, pero te lo dice aunque tú no quieras ir para allá, no discute contigo, no se pone de tu lado, bueno, si tú quieres ir al este, vamos a cambiar el este de este lado, no, nada de eso, no hace eso, no cambia de opinión porque a ti no te gusta la dirección que vas a ir, y dentro de la brújula hay una aguja imantada, ¿qué es imantada? Básicamente que tiene un imán, imanes que reaccionan unos con otros, ¿no? Usted ha puesto un imán uno con otro, se une y esa aguja siente el campo magnético de la tierra y se acomoda apuntando hacia dónde? Hacia el norte, y es un norte, le llaman magnético, eso es algo que pues todos tenemos o conocemos o tratamos de conocer, aunque ya todos tenemos muchos GPS así que ya casi nadie usa brújula como antes, la brújula no decide dónde apuntar, simplemente responde a una fuerza más grande que ella, sólo apunta, ahora bien, hoy vamos a conocer a un hombre que tenía una brújula clarísima, entendía muy bien la dirección, la voz de Dios estaba ahí hablándole directo, sin parábolas, así tratando de captivar al corazón, no, directo, Dios le estaba diciendo esto sin ambigüedad, punto y claro, y aún así compró un boleto para el lado contrario, ahora antes de que piense, ya yo conozco esa historia quiero pedirles que haga algo esta tarde, que hoy no la escuchen como la historia de la escuela bíblica de niños y creció en la iglesia, mira si esa historia yo la escuché cuando era un niño, no quiero que la escuche de esa manera, creo que Dios quiere revelar algo al corazón fresco, una historia bíblica para el más jovencito hasta el más viejito de aquí hoy, que la escuchen como si fuera la suya, porque la pregunta que les hice hace un momento, este pasaje o personaje, lo hubiese contestado igual que cada uno de ustedes, si la contestó en su mente, en su corazón, y aún así terminó el huyendo, se fue lejos,

esto no es la historia de un pez gigante, eso es lo que todos recuerdan, el pez, la ballena, no, el pez no es el punto de la historia y hoy en este capítulo 1 no va a ser el punto, creo que Dios va a hacer una cirugía al corazón hoy, para cada uno de nosotros, el punto es esto y se los voy a repetir varias veces porque hoy creo que necesito que les quede en el pecho no sólo en la cabeza, que aquí en el corazón llegue la desobediencia, escúchame bien, la desobediencia la mayoría de las veces no nace de no saber lo que Dios quiere, está conmigo, nace de saberlo perfectamente y todavía decir no me interesa y no querer obedecer porque no nos gusta a que Dios quiere alcanzar, Dios quiere alcanzar a alguien, por ahí yo no voy Señor porque eso no es el camino que yo quiero ir y esta persona profeta, profeta, seguidor de Yahweh, de Jehová, de Dios, no se perdió, este hombre se fue a propósito, se fue, cambió And the question that we are going to answer today is not what happened to this man. The question that you are going to ask yourself today, listen to this carefully, is in what direction are you walking? In what direction are you walking today? I want you to pay attention to my first point. God calls, but the heart can resist. Are you with me? Jonah chapter 1 verse 1 to 3, follow me. And the word of the LORD came to Jonah, son of Amittai, saying, Arise! Go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, for its evil has come upon me. But Jonah got up to flee from the presence of the LORD, to where? To Tarsus. From the presence of the LORD to Tarsus, far from the presence of the LORD. Look at verse 3 carefully, it does not say, Jonah got lost on the way to Nineveh. It does not say, Jonah got lost there. It does not say, Jonah did not understand the direction. It says, Jonah got up, went down to Hopi, looked for a boat, and paid the fare. What a shame, right? That is not confusion, that is planning. A clarity, this is what I want. A prophet, we are not talking about a non-believer, no, no, no. A prophet, who has prophesied already, who follows God. Tarsus was literally in the opposite direction to Nineveh.

If Nineveh was in the east, Jonah bought a ticket to the west. And as far as an old map would allow him to imagine at that time. I want you to see the maps there. The first one is this one, look, because I like a little bit of geography. You see here, he was probably in this area near Nazareth, where he grew up. From there God calls him to Nineveh, which would be today a part of Iraq. Nineveh, right now I will explain what Nineveh was. But the man says, no, I go far and you go where? To Hopi, to a port, and see the difference in distance. For those who work kilometers, 800, 900 kilometers, they go down 100, 120. But he does not stay there, he waits for a boat, a ship. And from there the next map leads us to understand, I think, if it is. Which goes in the direction to where? Towards Tarsus, that is, all the opposite. Nineveh to Iraq, Tarsus probably to the south of Spain. What a shame, I repeat. The completely opposite direction. Clearly God is calling him there, and he decides to go in another direction. He got on the right bus to go in the wrong direction. Hmm. God is calling him with a clear direction in his compass. And here is what worries me most about this text. Jonah knew exactly what God wanted. He did not have to guess. Sometimes one says, Lord, speak to me, speak to me. And God says, here I speak to you. You do not have to guess anything. I tell you what you want or what I want you to do. He did not have to pray for three weeks to discern God's will. God spoke clearly to him.

And even with the clear direction in his hand, like this compass, Jonah decided, I know where this points. And I'm going to walk to the other side. The prophet. So that we do not forget, God calls. But the human heart, yours and mine, has the ability to listen perfectly well and decide to disobey anyway. And it is not a problem of information. It is a problem of the heart. And before continuing, someone will tell me, Pastor, but Jonah had all his reasons for that. And I'm going to tell you, yes, he had them. Because it is easy to read the story and say, no idea. Because it was not so easy to obey the Lord. But you know what? I want us to see it now quickly. Because if we do not understand this, we are going to judge Jonah very quickly and very unfairly. Niniveh was not an ordinary city. It was the capital of the Assyrian Empire, the most feared empire in the entire ancient East. The Assyrians not only conquered, terrorized on purpose, they were strategists, they moved from city to city. And I don't say that, I say it in the writings that they themselves wrote, that are in their murals, monuments. Entire cities destroyed in the most cruel way that can be imagined. They raised skeletons, heads in places to terrorize cities. It was a ruthless thing, heads stacked outside the walls, so that the next people could see them before surrendering. And this is not a distant story for Jonas. This is the news of that night. I mean, what?

Niniveh, Assyria, for what? And he knew what he was doing to the people who resisted him, these people, they knew exactly, Israel, what was happening in this so difficult people. And here is what makes this even more heavy. There was another prophet in those same days, who was called Amos. And Amos had already warned Israel, he had punished Israel with his own idolatry, this is what will happen to you for your own injustice, because you are not obeying. He was going to be able to come from abroad, an army was going to take him, it was Assyria, as a judgment, so he already knew very well what Assyria and Jonas represented. He not only knew the cruelty of Niniveh, because of his reputation, Jonas probably suspected that that same empire one day would be what would destroy his own people. I mean, God, why are you taking my enemy? And he was not wrong, because a little later, several generations later, Assyria invades the northern kingdom, destroys Israel, takes 10 tribes in deportation, and they never returned. Do you see what is happening here? Everything connects. So when God says to Jonas, go and preach mercy to Niniveh, to Niniveh, what about me?

Mercy to Niniveh. What is happening here? He is not asking him to forgive an enemy, abstract, like people at a distance, no. He is asking him to preach salvation to the executioner of his own people. That's why he didn't go. Now, with that, I can finish the sermon here and say, well, I didn't have to go, right? The problem is that God called. Here I want us to take a break. Niniveh, for him, was a death sentence. But in this break, because this changes how we see history, before judging, perhaps, from the outside and saying, how selfish. When we understand what he understood, Jonas was not a villain of caricature. He was a man with a national wound. A legitimate fear. A logic that, humanly, made sense. I don't go to the executioners. Those people want to destroy my people. I don't want to go there. And that's what makes this story so powerful and so real. Because God is not asking Jonas something easy. He is asking him to love someone who has all the reasons in the world

to hate. You know where I'm going. Because first, I want you to feel the weight of this. Look at what Psalm 139, verse 7 to 10 says. It says that there is no place where we can run away from the presence of God. And I don't know how, at the beginning of this verse, it said that Jonas went to Tarso or was on his way to Tarso, first to Hopi, he took a boat, so as not to run away from what? From the presence of God. Who can run away from the presence of God? Neither the heavens, nor the bottom of the sea, nor the farthest place that exists. Says the word, no one can run away from what? From the presence of God. That is, a prophet knew the Scriptures clearly and says, no, I'm going far. Jonas knew it. He knew the Scriptures better than many of us. Or than us. And even knowing it, he bought the ticket. And the detail is that the ticket had a cost. It was not cheap. In other words, he already clearly took his wallet out of time, the credit card, whatever he had. And he said, I'm going to get out of my savings

to run away from the presence of God. of God. I want to ask you something, and don't answer me out loud, because that's your God here. But in your heart, is there a place, a person, a group of people to whom God is pushing you, and you are, at this very moment, buying the ticket to the opposite side? Not out of ignorance, but out of decision. Because for me, the book of Jonah is like a mirror. You'll see when I finish later on, in the next few weeks, in chapter 4, it's a mirror. It doesn't have an end. It's better to ask yourself, and you, Jonah, where are you standing? I want to tell you a quick story of a Dutch woman named Corrie Ten Boom. The Netherlands, World War II, the Nazis had invaded the country, you can imagine, I've heard that story. They were hunting Jews, and family by family, house by house. The situation was very sad, and Corrie and her family made the most dangerous decision of their lives. Do you know what they did? There's a movie, and there's a book about this, it's called Hidden Place. They draw attention, they start to hide Jews in their own house. They built a secret room behind a fake wall, and on the table they hid entire families, children, young people, old people, families, mothers of the soldiers who came to take them. They were hidden there, and they tried to hide them even when the soldiers were trying to register them, until someone reported them. The Nazis arrived, and arrested the entire family, Corrie and her sister Betsy. They sent them to a place called Ravenburg, in Germany. And one of the worst concentration camps for women, specifically for women during the war. And Betsy died in there. Corrie left that camp with nothing.

She left that camp with nothing. No family, no house, no country in which she could wait intact for her. No one, the family, everyone left, and she decided to spend the rest of her life, listen carefully, telling the world about God's forgiveness. She said, how? Until one day, while she was preaching, Corrie was in Germany, she talks about grace, about how God forgives the unforgivable, the mercy of God, and at the end of a service like this, a man walks towards her, he approaches her among the people, he extends his hand, and with a smile, at the moment Corrie recognizes him, he was one of the Nazi guards that was there. One of those that was there when all the women were humiliated. One of those that saw Betsy die. The man tells her, with a lot of sincerity, these words, because he had become a follower of Jesus already in that season, after the war, and he tells her, what a good message. It's wonderful to know that God forgives all our sins, right? And he extended his hand for her to take it. And Corrie writes that in that moment, after a sermon on the grace of forgiveness, at that precise moment, her arm didn't move, she felt cold in her head, something cold rose up, rigid inside her, that reminded her of the field where they arrived, where they were at that time, where her sister was, the cold, the hunger, the uniforms of the guards, and she says that it was the longest moment of her life,

and then, she did something that she says, she herself says that she couldn't do it alone. She prayed, the most honest prayer that anyone could ever pray. She says, Jesus, I can't forgive this man. I don't have that forgiveness in me. If it exists, you will have to come, he will have to come to you, give me what I don't have. Give it to me, Lord. And she raised her hand, she took the man's hand, and she says that in that moment, in that moment... He felt a stream of heat that came down his shoulders, that came down his arms, that came down to his fingers. And at that moment, the words came out of his lips and he said, I forgive you, brother, brother, with all my heart, with all my heart. And until the end of his days, I don't know if there is a photo of her out there, he died at the age of 91. Corrie said the same thing, preaching place after place. God's love is deeper than the deepest hatred that we human beings can produce. Give the Lord a round of applause. Now, that's Niniveh. It's not just a geographical place, sometimes Niniveh has a face, it has a name, it has a story with you that you didn't choose. And God is pushing you towards that, not because it's easy, but because He knows something that you still can't see. Is there anyone that God is pushing and you are buying a ticket to the opposite side? Not because of ignorance, but because of a decision. 2.2.

To run away from God always affects others. And you say, how? I thought that Jonas was the only one affected in all of this. Jonas, the prophet, gets on the ship, he lies down, he sleeps. He sleeps! And while he sleeps, look at what happens on the deck. But the Lord, verse 4, unleashed a great wind over the sea, and there was such a great storm in the sea that the ship was about to, what? To break. Has anyone ever been on a ship with many waves, about to break? Well, I did last week. I'll tell you later, I won't tell you today. It felt weird. The pagan sailors, people that didn't know the true God, are terrified here. Each one is claiming their own God. They throw the load to the sea to lighten the ship. I mean, everything they have, let's go, let's go, let's go, so that the ship feels better, more, more, more, more, so that we can handle the matter. So terrified, and the prophet of God is sleeping in the cellar. No shame, that's today's word. It's not called No Shame, but I feel like saying it. The pagans were praying, the prophet was sleeping. And that should bother all of us here. The captain wakes him up and says, and this is almost funny if it wasn't so sad, right? How can you be sleeping, verse 6. Get up, cry out to your God. How, how, how can you be sleeping? What is this? Get up, invoke your God.

Let your God think of us, and let's not be lazy in all of this. A pagan having to tell the prophet of God to start praying, to look for Him, to help. They throw luck among themselves, luck falls on Jonas, so they realize that something is happening to this man. And then they ask him the direct question, What have you done? I mean, in a storm where the boat is breaking, I scream. I don't know, maybe I'm just relaxing a little here. What have you done? I mean, what have you done here? For the first time in history, Jonas tells the complete truth. He tells him who he is. Where are you from? Where are you from, and what are you hearing from the presence of God? And the text says that the men had a lot of fear, pagans. Look at what was happening here. Pay attention to this. The private decision of a man. His personal disobedience. His I don't want to go. His it's not my time. I'm not ready. It's not my season. When everything is in order. He is putting at risk the life of a whole crew. That has nothing to do with his call. How people are affected around for not obeying the call of God. Are you with me? This is not just an old story.

This is a pattern that we see over and over again in the word of God. Your hidden disobedience is not only yours, you, nobody knows it, we are seeing things that you can't see A spiritual kingdom that is happening around, things, the word says, the fight is not against what? Blood or flesh, but against what? Principalities, powers, judges of evil, this century, right? There are things that happen around that we allow not to obey the Lord, His call, and we want blessing without obedience You only affect me, and I come home from someone else Personal disobedience is almost never personal You, I don't want to go, it affects your family You, I don't want to forgive, it affects your church You, I don't want to obey, this that God told me is moving storms in boats where there are people who don't even know your name It's not personal, it's a community Here is what calls my attention the most in verse 9 When they finally ask Jonah, who is he? He doesn't apologize, and I like that He doesn't say, well it's complicated, you know, he says the truth, raw, direct I am the problem And that's what calls my attention, when someone tells me I am the problem in a situation, it creates trust Are you with me? No, he's not covering his eyes, when one of my children tells me, no, I did it like that, but no, no You did it? Yes, now I believe in you Now I can trust, it's true, this is clear, this is the first step of repentance It's not to feel guilt, it's to stop pointing out the storm and start pointing out yourself Lord, I'm going through a storm, Pastor, pray for my storm No, no, I want to pray for you There is something going on in your heart, the storm is something else around that is probably God's will To bring you to Him, to His heart Are you with me? Because when things are good, sometimes we don't put our heart in front of the Lord as He wants And I'm not saying that things have to go wrong, but many of us know that in this life In which we run to the opposite side, God has to say, I'm going to teach you how things are done

I'm going after you with everything And the people around will realize And these people realized, the sailors ask Jonah, what should I do with him so that the sea will calm down And Jonah's answer is shocking, verse 12 says Take me, take me and throw me into the sea And the sea will calm down around you Well, I know that because of me, this great storm has come upon you Finally, Jonah assumes He assumes responsibility There is a conversation that I have had many times As a pastor, as a chaplain, as a counselor and all that These are conversations that take place with people in difficult times, in a crisis For example, in a marriage, in a family crisis, in a moment where life is falling apart The conversation almost always starts the same Now I'm going to give you what I have known, but don't be scared If you have a situation, here we are It starts with telling me everything that happened Who said what? Who did what? When did it start? Why is it not their fault? Why is the situation complicated? Why would anyone in their place have done the same? Porque allá es una oración, ese capítulo 2 es de una oración poderosa. Pero miren la palabra que usa el texto, dispuso. No dice casualmente apareció un pez. No dice por mala suerte, Jonás cayó en la boca de un pez y no lo masticó. Se lo tragó, ¿por qué pudo haberlo masticado? Pero no, Dios lo dispuso y Dios tenía todo el control de cómo iba a funcionar el asunto.
