Of Jonas, so whoever visits us for the first time says, well, they are in the book of Jonas. Yes, I have always heard the book of Jonas preached in a single sermon, the four chapters, but we have divided it chapter by chapter and today we are working on chapter 3.

But whoever needs a summary of Jonas before reaching chapter 3 needs to see this video, can we all see it? Ready? Let's see the video to see if it comes out. Let's go. The word of God. Jonas did not listen to the word of God. That's why people threw him into the deep sea. And a very big fish came and swallowed him. Because he did not listen to the word of God. How many of us have had second chances? Thank God for His mercy. And those second chances. And although with the hands, with the smile, with the giant fish in the Dominican class. Many times some of us who grew up in our countries with this song. We no longer see it as children. But it is still the story of God. The story that still conquers our hearts. They are the man who fled from God. The one who paid a ticket to go in the opposite direction. Do you remember? The one who ended up three days in the stomach of a fish. Praying for his life. I do not know you, but I would never want to see myself inside a fish that way.

That man is standing now on the beach. Soaked. And although this word sounds very harsh. But I have to tell you because it is what comes out in the Bible. Vomited. And in general, the one who has experienced that is not something that feels nice. The first thing God does is not resent him, talk about what happened at that uncomfortable moment. To leave within a fish of three days, three nights there. It does not feel very comfortable. Maybe the physical. And in that process, there is not a six-month restoration process. There is no counseling before the reassignment. In verses 1 and 2, the word of the Lord came for the second time. To Jonah, get up, go to Nineveh, the great city. And proclaim in it the message that I will tell you. For the second time, God repeats the same order that Jonah disobeyed before. He disobeyed once and did not change the plan. He does not look for another prophet. It is not worth continuing to work with the same person. He already failed me. His call is already buried. No. He returns to the same man with the same mission. And today I want us to do ... something different with this chapter, I don't just want us to see what happened, I want us to feel and feel what they felt, what Jonas felt and maybe what Ninive felt along this journey. I want us to enter Jonas' skin, his bones, walking to the city he hated the most in the world. I want us to enter Ninive's skin, his walls, listening to a foreigner's death sentence. See both sides, see the two extremes of the matter.

So we're all going to see ourselves reflected in one of the two, and that's fine because the word is alive and what? Effective, sharp, it reaches the bones, it transforms the heart and if it doesn't bother you, then maybe it's not doing its effect. Look what it says here, the context that almost no one preaches, and I want you to work it with me because Jonas hated this mission, and when I say the word hate, I don't say it in a very soft way, it's to hate a mission that was given to his heart. So before we continue, we need to understand something that the text says, which is that we sometimes don't take into account, 26 centuries later, we sometimes forget that Ninive wasn't just any city. It was the capital of the most feared empire in the entire ancient world. It was a place where you didn't want to go, nor did I. Archeologists or archeology have left us the records of the Assyrians themselves. The Assyrians, the records are there, they give themselves, their own propaganda carved on the walls of their palaces. Historians agree, Assyria was one of the most cruel nations in the ancient world. More cruel in the treatment they gave to their own captives. They didn't treat them with dignity. That's not an exaggeration of a preacher to try to captivate your heart. No, no, it's in the museums, in the British Museum, it has original reliefs of Ninive, where you see an Assyrian king blinding a captive while he holds him, taking his eyes off him with a hook. And he says, why? With hooks still on his own lips. And I'm taking a little image here, uncomfortable, but it's necessary. Other captive kings wait for the same fate with hooks on their noses, like animals, tearing their own lives, their bones, whatever they were. Why do I tell you this? Because when Jonah receives the order to go preach to Ninive, even though maybe you and I heard it as a child, and it sounds nice, and it stayed until the fish, the disobedience, and the song ends there.

No, this goes on. Because it's not like for me to go preach to my neighbor in the corner. It's like if they told me, go preach repentance to the poster that hurt my family. Are you with me? The one that hurt my children, my daughter. And now chapter 1 makes sense. Jonah didn't run away because he was lazy to travel. He was a prophet. He ran away because deep in his heart, listen carefully, he didn't want Ninive to have the opportunity to repent. And it seems that it makes sense sometimes in our mind and our heart when we do it with others. Especially the one who has done harm. And I'm not saying that Damas said a gossip about you. It's real harm. Complete. That flooded your soul and your being. And made you the person you are today sometimes. Some of the others. One that other person. Jonah didn't have a problem of obedience, I would say all the time, even though it seemed that he did. He had a problem of compassion for those that generally or really were enemies. Is there someone, a person, a group, a category of people that you, in secret, don't want God to forgive? Think for a moment. Maybe you're not there today, maybe you are. Maybe you've been there. Just recalculate and it returns you to the correct direction It gives you the instruction This is how God was with Jonah in verse 1 There is no sermon that says, I told you Before the second order, God simply recalculates Here you go there, he gives him the route again And that catches my attention But now imagine Jonah walking That route recalculated by the Lord Taking him to his north, to his call A single foreign man Without an army, without an escort Entering through the doors of the empire That saw him as an enemy And the most fearsome empire of that time Hey! And Jonah walks a whole day Inside that city with his heart beating fast Hoping to be recognized as an Israelite And I would say, maybe they kill him right there If they don't take him captive And in the midst of that fear, he releases the message Eight words in the original Hebrew It is reduced a little when I say it in Spanish But eight words, look at what it says Then Jonah began to walk the city On the road of a day and proclaimed In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed The one who visits us today will say Hey, I didn't come to talk about judgment, right?

And that is real many times Sometimes we preach, we serve, we pray for someone But inside we are waiting for the failure Of that person to feel justified For what he did to me Or for what he has done And that brings me to point 3 I go in line We give verse by verse What Ninive could have felt when listening We saw Jonah Pay attention to Jonah Now what are we going to do? with Nineveh, let's turn the cameras, camera, action. Let's put ourselves next to the people of Nineveh for a moment, imagine being a merchant, a negotiator, sweeping out of his little house, a mother is moving, a soldier of that city, growing up in an empire that was proud, this is my empire, was proud of his violence, and suddenly this strange man appears, who is not even from there, shouting in the streets that in 40 days the city will be what? Destroyed. What would you have felt? Let's be clear, because maybe you have heard others with parkatas preaching in the corners of the streets, and you would say, he's crazy, sometimes, right? Has it ever happened to you? I have made that mistake too,

I remember walking through Hollywood and there are some who are fine in Hollywood, when I lived in California, walking down those streets, there are always preachers in every corner, and some who say very sensible things, and others who say, that sounds very hard. And sometimes it passed through my mind, he's crazy. Why does he speak like that? What would you have felt seeing a man walking down the streets in that way, living there? I imagine the panic running from house to house. Or maybe some saying, he's crazy. And the answer, being even more terrifying, is that an army is not coming. A God is coming that they didn't even know. And here something happens that breaks all the religious patterns of the ancient world. It says, then, verse 5, the inhabitants of Nineveh believed in God and proclaimed to Juno, and they dressed in what? Of silicon from the eldest to the youngest of them. If that were easy in Dallas, how beautiful it would be, that one preaches this Sunday, look at me on the internet, repent, and next Sunday it's full. Everyone with silicon. But look, God working, a disobedient man at the moment, but God wanted to bring something special.

God knows the times. So when the Bible speaks of silicon, imagine a very rough and uncomfortable clothing that people put on to show that they were truly repentant and humiliated before God. So it's seen in the Bible many times, and there, in other words, it was their way of saying, God, I acknowledge my sin, or our sin, I leave my pride, and I desperately need your mercy. I need it. From the eldest to the youngest. All of them, all of them. This wasn't a meeting of religious leaders discussing theology. Let's discuss theology, let's see how it works. What is repentance? Instantly you have to do something here. That was an entire city. Merchants, soldiers, slaves, families stopping their lives at the same time for a message of eight words spoken by a foreigner that they themselves had seen as an enemy before. How many times were they enemies with Israel? And then, in verse 6, the news reaches the king! And instead of defending his throne,

instead of sending the prophet to be silenced and execute him for seduction or sedition, or proclaiming things that were not within his agreement, what is exactly what any king of Assyria would have done? These words say in verse 6, when the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, he took off his mantle, I wanted to bring a mantle today, but I didn't. He covered himself with silicone and sat on ashes. The most powerful man in the city, most feared in the world, sitting on ashes. And then comes the detail that always brings out laughter, at least to me, when I read it. I don't know about you, but to me this seems like a joke. The king orders a decree to be proclaimed, and look at what it says in verse 7 and 8. Neither man, nor animal, nor ox, nor sheep, try anything, no one. Do not let them graze or drink water. Cover yourself with silicone, men and animals. animals, and cry out to God with strength, and return, each one, from his evil way, and from the violence that is in you, in your hands. I don't know about you, but I imagine the cows of I did to this man, but I just started seeing instead what I had done to that man? And the animals??? Only to live without understanding what is happening.

The sheep, nothing was left out of the mourning. Not even the cattle. And the king closes with the most humble phrase of the whole chapter. I would say, if Jonas learned this reality from the beginning. He says, who knows, verse 9, my last verse, look. Who knows, maybe God will return, repent, and cast aside the burning of his wrath, and we shall not perish. Pay attention here. The king had no promise. Jonas never said to them, repent, and you shall be forgiven. He never said that. The message they heard was pure judgment without offering of mercy. The 8 words, nothing together. He was not connected to mercy with judgment. That's what he said. And even so, with only the possibility. Who knows. That word caught my attention, only 2 words. Who knows that God could have compassion for an entire pagan city. He threw himself headlong into repentance without knowing the result of that. Are you with me? And there, each word has its depth and its need to share. Who knows. Who knows. Nineveh ran towards mercy without guarantees. Jonas ran far from the mission with all the guarantees. God does not seek a symbol, he seeks a change. The heart. I want to talk for a moment about silicon. None of us came today dressed in rough fabrics.

No one came here covered in ashes, or someone came here covered in ashes, I don't see it. But that doesn't mean we don't have our own symbols many times. The problem was never the fabric. The problem is that when we use any spiritual symbol to get closer to God or to God, without allowing God to change our heart, that many times still happens today. Your silicon can be posting a video or a verse on social media every Sunday while at home you have not spoken to your wife for weeks. It can be appearance many times. A problem without speaking to your husband or your children. Our silicon can be going to the altar again and again, crying the same tears, and it's okay to come before the Lord, but to do the same prayer and return on Monday living exactly the same. Without a change of heart. Your silicon can be raising your hands during worship. How beautiful, isn't it? While a few meters away from you is a person you have not forgiven. And you decide to continue ignoring. But no, Lord, at least I'm fine in front of you, Lord. Your silicon can be a generous offering. Not because God transformed your heart, but because in a moment it can change our consciousness or calm it. The problem was never the symbol. The problem is using the symbol to avoid true repentance. I can speak beautifully, even religiously, to show myself mature, but with a heart not surrendered in front of the Lord. I remember one of the devotional there in Mexico one morning, and I have spoken to him several times here, it was, how is our soul? That would be one of the most important questions. Porque muchas veces hacemos ministerio, trabajamos, mostramos muchas cosas externas, pero nuestro corazón puede estar alejado del corazón de Dios. Y es aquí donde Jonás nos sorprende. Porque el Rey de Nínive sí usó un símbolo verdadero. Se vistió de silicio. Se sentó sobre ceniza. Toda la ciudad ayunó. Todo eso fue real. Pero cuando llegamos al versículo 10, el narrador nos dice algo muy interesante y diría yo muy poderoso. Miren esta atención a esto. No dice, y Dios vio el silicio. No dice, Dios vio el ayuno. No dice, Dios vio las cenizas. Escucha lo que dice, versículo 10, mi último versículo. Cuando Dios vio sus acciones que se habían apartado de su mal camino. Dios vio algo más profundo. Vio que dejaron el camino por lo que antes caminaba. Una nación que ante los ojos humanos no merecía misericordia. Vio el arrepentimiento, salió del corazón y terminó cambiando la manera de vivir. Hasta los animales. Es como decir hay algo en tu casa que quizás deba cambiar e inclusive quizás hay cosas que hay que quitar. Yo recuerdo aquí, y lo voy a decir sin pedir permiso y disculpe. Yo creo que ya lo hemos dicho tantas veces que no hay ningún problema con eso. Raúl, alguien que admiro que yo le decía esta mañana y este viaje a alguno de los líderes. En seis años Raúl ha sido tan fiel en la hospitalidad. Yo no recuerdo ni una sola vez que haya faltado. Yo he faltado tantas veces a un servicio los domingos. Yo, ni una sola vez. Y me impacta obviamente su entrega y su fidelidad. Pero algo que me impacta más que eso es escuchar su historia. Que cuando vino a los pies de Cristo, él tenía muchos ídolos en su hogar. Muchas cosas en su hogar de su vida, vida pasada. Y llegó a su casa un día y tiró todo a la basura. Rompió todo, no se lo regaló a alguien más. Porque hay veces dicen yo esto ya es mi ídolo.

Mira, te lo regalo a ti. ¿Para qué? Si te hace daño a ti, te hace daño a la otra persona. Es que tiene un valor, no, no, no, no. Si te hace, hay que destruirlo. Y me llegó mucho al corazón. Cuando es un arrepentimiento genuino, es un cambio de ciento ¿qué? 80 grados. Vas en esta dirección, ahora va aquí. Muchas veces ir aquí implica sacar cosas en tu vida. Que aunque tu corazón está arraigado, hay raíces ahí. Tú dices no más, esto completamente se va. Y créeme, hay maldiciones generacionales que hay que romper. Hay cosas de nuestro pasado, de nuestro papá, mamá, nuestro abuelo, tatarabuelo, cosas del pasado. Dice yo no voy a repetir el mismo patrón con mi familia. Cuando yo llego a Cristo, yo soy libre, mi familia es libre. Yo rompo con todas las herraduras del nombre poderoso ¿qué? De Jesús. Y ese fue el verdadero milagro de Nínive. No fue que todos se vistieran igual, fue que todos comenzaron a caminar diferente. Porque el silicio nunca fue la meta. Era simplemente la evidencia visible de un corazón que estaba cambiado. Y déjame preguntarte algo. No hay que estar sentado junto a ti. ¿Cuál es tu símbolo? ¿Qué cosa haces para sentirte bien espiritualmente? Mientras hay un área de tu vida que Dios sigue señalando y tú sigues evitando. Porque podemos cantar, podemos servir, podemos diezmar,

podemos ofrendar, podemos hacer tantas cosas, ayudar al prójimo, hacer muchas cosas que podemos hacer. Podemos venir todos los domingos y aún así seguir caminando por el mismo camino de siempre. Y todavía no ser como Asiria, porque nadie aquí, yo veo que yo sepa, es temible o tan temible como Asiria o Nínive de ese tiempo. Pero cuando Dios mira una vida, Él no busca una vida. He looks for a ritual first, he looks for a direction, he looks for a heart that decided to return to Him. God has never looked for a show of repentance, He has always looked for a change of direction. And that was exactly what Ninive found. Not a perfectly religious city, but a city that decided to leave behind its old path and begin to walk towards God. There God creates revival. Revival can sometimes be visualized as a lot of jumps and a lot of emotion. And a long time ago I saw a better and clearer definition. Genuine revival is when there is a completely repentant generation. If we run away from our bad paths and repent before God, God will heal our land. And here God does something that breaks all the theology that Jonas thought to have dominated. God himself repents. How? Not in the sense that God sinned, but in the sense that God changes His course of action in response to the genuine repentance of the people. And this can blow our minds. The same God who announced destruction is the one who retains that destruction when he sees a real heart, not a performance. God does not get impressed with the ashes. He moves with the heart that returns. And my last point is this. The prophet who did not want to go and the Savior who did want to go. Who is your Savior? Jesus. I want to take you to something that Jesus himself said.

When I read it, I said, wow, sir, I have read this so many times, but look, look, look, look. It's like the Bible can speak to you even if you have read it many times, many times. Jesus himself said about this chapter centuries later, standing before the people of his own generation. Look at what he says, religious, those who followed him, those who hated him. He says, the men of Nineveh, he says these words in Matthew chapter 12, verse 41. The men of Nineveh will rise with this generation in judgment and condemn her. Because they repented with the preaching of whom? Of Jonah. And look, something bigger than Jonah is here. And who was that? Himself. He mentions Jonah, Jesus, in front of a crowd that was rejecting his teachings. There is something bigger than Jonah. And he says, he is here. Think about the contrast. Jonah was a prophet who did not want to go. Who preached with resentment. The eight words, repent. Who preached with resentment, who deep down hoped that Nineveh would be lost. And yet, an entire city turned to whom? To God. Now think about Jesus. Jesus did not come to us with resentment. He left the throne. Because in such a way, God loved the world. Who did he give it to? To his only son, so that all who believe in him would not be lost, but have what? Jesus did not come to us with resentment. Jesus did not come hoping that we would fail. Jesus came wanting to come.

He surrendered. That is why the Bible says, They did not drag him to the mission. Go, go, go. There was no need to drag him. He chose it himself. Jonah spent three days in the belly of a fish. And he went out to preach judgment with his mouth twisted by anger. Jesus spent three days in the belly of the earth. Dead, buried. And he went out defeating death. To preach not judgment, but grace. Grace for your life. Grace for your heart. No matter what you have done in this life. God always opens to you with open arms. A Savior who died for us while we were still enemies. His enemies. Enemies of God. And that is the Gospel.
